ON DVD: “The Avengers,” “American Horror Story,” “Twisted Romance” And More!

  Thank heavens some superheroes are here to save us this week because, boy, is the slate dark and twisted: Marvel’s dream team—Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury—unite in the international box office hit, The Avengers. Saucy southerner Del Shores shares more racy true tales in Del Shores: Sordid Confessions. An Argentinean youth and old criminal learn what a dysfunctional relationship is in Twisted Romance, while two Chilean childhood friends reunite as sexually curious teens in Otra Pelicula De Amor (above). Plus: Criterion brings back Eating Raoul, the campy cannibal cult-fave from queer filmmaker Paul Bartel. FIRST: Avengers Assemble!
The Avengers ($49.99 3D Blu-ray, $39.99 Blu-ray, $29.99 DVD: Walt Disney Video) After setting up a handful of successful character franchises, Marvel brings them together in this first, hugely entertaining team-up flick, The Avengers. Writer/director Joss Whedon delivers loads of fun, smackdowns, conflict, and even cracks a successful formula for Hulk (whose films until now really sucked). The Blu-Rays are packed with extras including a new tie-in short film, “Item 47,” gag reel, deleted scenes, and geek-a-licious commentary track from Whedon. http://youtu.be/ITe9Koh7kug Eating Raoul ($39.95 Blu-ray, Criterion Collection) The late gay actor-director Paul Bartel is probably best known for this 1982 gem, in which he and fellow indie icon Mary Woronov portray a pair of uptight milquetoasts who start killing neighborhood pervs and sell the bodies. This Criterion Collection release includes a restored digital transfer, commentary by the screenwriter and crew, a new documentary, gag reel, archival interviews with Bartel and Woronov, and two short films. After all these years it’s still delicious! NEXT: Del Shores has even more Confessions
Del Shores: Sordid Confessions ($24.99 DVD, QC Cinema) Shores, the saucy Southern creator of Sordid Lives shares even more bawdy tales with a live audience in this follow-up to his one-man concert video, My Sordid Life. There’s plenty of scandalous dish about everything from the ill-fated Sordid TV series to Shores’ own complicated love life. Extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, audience interviews and footage from the DVD cover’s hunky photo shoot. NEXT: Teenage exploration in Otra Pelicula de Amor

So begins a largely shirtless summer of pot- and alcohol-fueled exploration of the creative, emotional, and sexual kind—including strange hallucinations involving a long-haired hunk. NEXT: Don’t get it Twisted

Twisted Romance

($24.95 DVD, QC Cinema)

In this bad romance from Argentina, handsome but aimless teen Raul becomes involved with Roberto, a shady and controlling older man. But will dysfunction result in violence—and even murder? An intense, well-acted character study with even more twisted layers to peel back.

    I just thought I’d mention that if you have a Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile (a gay friendly company) you can download or stream The Avengers for free via Media Hub. They announced the freebie about a week ago. Saves ya a few pennies on buying the DVD or Blu-Ray since you can stream it from your phone to your TV (which I did last night with my cuddle buddy).
