YouTuber Logan Paul is perhaps best known for sharing a video with his 15 million YouTube subscribers last January of Aokigahara, Japan’s notorious “suicide forest”, where he encountered a hanging corpse, pointed, and laughed.
Remember that? It was truly vile and caused a huge outcry on the internet, prompting Paul to issue multiple apologies, none of which felt particularly sincere.
Well, he’s making headlines again.
The 23-going-on-12-year-old from Ohio just announced that his New Year’s Eve resolution to “go gay” for a whole month. And people aren’t happy about it.

In his podcast this week, Paul and his co-host Mike Majlak talked about their plans for 2019.
In January, they guys have decided to go “sober and vegan.” In February, they’ll do the opposite, and eat steak and drink “big bottles of Tito’s [vodka] and shit.”
Then comes March.
“And then March,” Paul says. “Take a guess. What is it? Male-only March! So it’s male-only March, we’re gonna attempt to go gay for just one month.”
“And then swing,” Majlak interrupts. “Go back!”
Then the boys erupt into laughter–since being gay is hilarious!–before moving on to discuss the line-up for Coachella this year, which, let’s not forget, is owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz, who has donated tons of money to multiple antigay causes.
Thankfully, the decent people of the world aren’t having any of Paul’s homophobic B.S.

To some people “gay” is more about a lifestyle or more about someone’s overall romantic, sexual, relationship preferences and ambitions than it is about homosexuality. That’s something people need to get okay with. However, this was a tone-deaf joke that reeks of basic and “hetero privilege”. Logan is just a cornball in general. So much so that he doesn’t really deserve anyone’s ire. That’s how corny he is. On the other hand, if so many people weren’t so damn obsessed with trying to prove that homosexuality isn’t a choice (as if proving such a thing would alter the minds of homophobes) and weren’t so obsessed with identity and dictating other people’s identities then lame nonsense like this wouldn’t bother anyone.

To all psychologists and medical professionals, being gay has at least some sort of nature element. This is proven by every study. The twin study basically confirmed this. I mean, if someone had romantic, sexual, gay relationships and ambitions…..wouldn’t that be considered homosexuality? I don’t think there is anything wrong with “identity”, especially within minority groups. It gives many a sense of connection and community. It is very true that sexuality is fluid in general, more so than many believe or understand. THIS GUY THOUGH? I believe orientation is often a mix of physiology and psychology and more of another depending on the person. And no scientific study has legitimately proven homosexuality is a born with trait. Though I feel it is for some people. Everyone is just different. And everyone is different for different reasons. Some people feel they were born gay. Some gay-identifying people do not. While fluidity does have some legitimacy. I have experienced it first hand. And many, many people have talked about being heterosexual and then becoming bisexual as they got older, being bisexual and becoming homosexual, being bisexual and becoming heterosexual and so forth. While to many people their “gayness” or “queerness” rests more on their overall romantic, sexual, emotional, relationship ambitions and sustained preferences rather than on “scientific” homosexuality, bisexuality, pan-sexuality or whatever. There is nothing homophobic about admitting that everyone is just different and have different circumstance. That doesn’t equate to claiming “being gay is a choice” or undermining that at least some people are likely born homosexual.
My ultimate point is that is simply shouldn’t matter. This obsession with trying to scientifically prove homosexuality or bisexuality and policing everyone’s identity doesn’t serve a ton of purpose and just comes off as hostile. People are still gonna hate no matter what scientists or psychologists say. People are still gonna do whatever they do and identify as whatever they identify as. And apparently, people are still gonna get their panties in a bunch over some idiotic’s dumb joke.
The focus should be on people having self-understanding, self-confidence, mental health and being with and loving whoever they truly want to be with and love, not on anybody’s science.

gymmuscleboy, I highly doubt this was an “it’s okay to be gay” moment. It was more of a “I’m gonna say something ridiculous and controversial for the sake of a laugh” type of moment.
The real funny thing is that most straight-identifying people don’t really care about it being a choice or not. Whether they’re super religious and Conservative and anti-gay or whether they’re “allies”, most just don’t care. And the more you talk to straight people the more you realize that many of them understand the romantic/sexual/emotional/relationship spectrum, many of them understand fluidity, many of them get that a significant amount of straight and gay identifying are not heterosexual or homosexual. It’s the anti-gay crowd as well as a certain percentage of gay and bi identifying people that make this conversation stagnant.
But this is not to defend Logan Paul’s juvenile, talent-less ass. It’s just to say getting offended by what he said doesn’t make a ton of sense.

You’re making the same mistake as the people who say orientation is entirely inherent and is always something you’re born with. Everybody is different. There are indeed people who have zero attractions, romantic feelings or sexual enjoyment beyond a single gender and are even grossed out by any sexual contact beyond a single gender. They shouldn’t be seen as basic or lesser than. Conventional and inherent homosexuality and heterosexuality is real. However, yes, identity tends to have some degree of choice to it, particularly if you have some amount of dimensions or fluidity in the romantic/sexual/emotional/relationship parts of your orientation. There are many people who have some attractions, sexual feelings/enjoyment and/or romantic feelings beyond their gender but still emphatically embrace a gay identity (or someone like myself who identifies as a “gay pansexual”). Just as there are many people who are not entirely heterosexual but see themselves as straight. You can’t control anyone’s sense of self, anyone’s sex life, what identity people feel most suits them and gives them the most confidence, and how people have varying opinions about what all these identities mean. You just can’t control that stuff. So, there’s no point in trying.
But you’re giving Logan way too much credit. He wasn’t trying to be subversive when it comes to identity and sex. He was offering up some lame humor. It was a lame joke that only the most sensitive and totalitarian of people would get all huffy about.
