Lea DeLaria, who plays Big Boo on Orange is the New Black, recently did what everyone usually just thinks and scolded a universally unwanted proselytizer at length on a New York City subway.
Things start off fairly low key (as low key as you can get with this type of situation), with Delaria repeatedly telling him “you have no right.” “Jesus never said for you to do this,” she adds while flashing her “Bad Jew” T-shirt, as if logic would somehow prevail on the D train that day.
Then, wouldn’t you know it? Things get more heated. Surprising, we know.
Eventually the preacher man invokes the image of Sodom and Gomorrah, and there’s really only one place to go from there. “The sin of homosexuality,” he throws out into the void.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“Oh there it is! There we go!” DeLaria exclaims with her hands physically and metaphorically thrown over her head, “Now he calls me a dyke. Now I’ve been called a dyke by the crazy Christian.”
Watch the whole scene unfold in the following two videos:

How uncomfortable for the people having to sit next to these guys. I’m all for freedom of religion, but these sidewalk/subway preachers need to go! I’ve never seen OITNB but I’m glad he shut this loudmouth preacher up.

I didn’t know Lea De Laria is a member of the tribe. Totally awesome and Mazel girlfriend for taking on the heckler.

There are rules against playing loud music in the subway. Aren’t there rules against loud preaching? Why not just offer somebody a pamphlet—-silently.

You ignore them just like you ignore the other crazies on the train.

Damn…glad I wasn’t on that train!

I wonder how evolved we would be if we had more gay/bi men with balls, used other than for teabagging and selfies, stood up like she did?

I saw Lea Delaria perform at a gay dance bar in Fort Lauderdale too long ago to remember and had the luck to talk privately with her for a few minutes while we both waited for our cars. She was a true joy and also took no shiite from anyone. My bff in LA plays online Scrabble with her and she is a killer smart player.

@enlightenone: The only time I’ve seen the bigots confronted was by our sisters. For whatever reason Gay men are just too afraid of any kind of confrontation and the bigots love that.

@Stache99:
Our sisters are women, and may less likely be attacked physically in public.
Standing-up for ourselves is a duty as an honorable, courageous, and dignified people, but honoring ourselves also means self-preservation and avoiding physical danger, if possible. Assessing when, where, and how, to “speak ones mind” and with whom, can mean a world trouble, or worse, for GLBT.
Knowing how to avoid a potentially violent and avoidable situation, is not being afraid of confrontation. That’s being prudent.

@aliengod: OITNB is a great show! That actor plays “Boo” and she’s great at it.
I’m all for freedom of religion as long as they don’t shove their religion down others’ throats. Your imaginary friend is your’s – I don’t share your imaginations.

It’s his right to proclaim his nonsense in a public space, but I do love that DeLaria challenged him directly.
I always wish that people calling these Christian fanatics out would ask them to show where in the Four Gospels, which detail Jesus’s life and teachings, he ever mentions (never does) and denounces (never does) homosexuality or same sexual love or desire. They can’t. Because he never does. Just as he never mentions abortion. And both same sexual desire and love and abortion were known of in Jesus’s time.
I pressed a Christian religious fanatic I once got into an argument about on these two issues, and he finally had to back down. It turns out he didn’t really know the Bible that well at all, though he did know all the right-wing buzz phrases he’d heard about what the Bible “said.” Uh huh.

Good for her!! I would not approach someone, getting into their personal space could be perceived as aggression and violence may occur.

Religion the joy of psychotics.
