THE SCREENING ROOM

OUT ON DVD: Eating Out: Open Weekend, Dragon Tattoo, The Muppets And A Battle Royale!

This week’s home video lineup is like a trip around the world, kicking off stateside with a popular rom-com series’ fifth entry, Eating Out: Open Weekend (above) which sees the gang transported to Palm Springs for more sexy hijinks. The cold and dark side of Sweden is the setting for David Fincher’s version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. And from Japan comes Battle Royale — a pre-Hunger Games cult hit about high-schoolers forced to battle it out in a bloody contest of survival — which finally gets its long-awaited American release.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
($40.99 BluRay, $30.99 DVD, Sony Pictures)

Peter Fincher’s take on Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel retains the original Swedish location but changes up the cast with Daniel Craig as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist and Oscar nominee Rooney Mara as the disturbed and beguiling Lisbeth Salandar. The stylish film’s BluRay is complemented by a revealing commentary from Fincher and handful of featurettes.

The Sitter
($39.99 BluRay, $29.98 DVD, 20th Century Fox)

In this Adventures in Babysitting-esque comedy, Jonah Hill plays Noah, a 20-something misfit tasked with watching three kids—including an uptight 13-year-old gay boy (Where The Wild Things Are’s Max Records). When Noah brings the children into Manhattan on an ill-advised drug run, hysteria ensues—as well as a rather heartwarming it’s-ok-to-be-gay pep talk with the gayby. The DVD release includes plenty of cutting-room-floor extras like a gag reel and deleted scenes.

The Muppets
($49.99 BluRay, $29.99 DVD, Walt Disney Studios)

Jim Henson’s beloved creations reunite to save their derelict studio. Yep that’s basically the jist of  this latest refresh of the franchise, which is actually quite good thanks to star/co-writer Jason Segel, co-writer Nicholas Stoller and director James Bobin. The BluRay and DVD are jammed with features, including deleted scenes, a commentary track and “The Longest Blooper Reel Ever Made (in Muppet History).” Mahnah mahnah!

Battle Royale
($29.99 BluRay, Anchor Bay)

High-school students are exiled to an island and forced to kill or be killed. Sound familiar? Nothing against the suspiciously derivative, megahyped The Hunger Games (this film may never have received an American release otherwise), but this Japanese cult favorite is hard to top with its memorable characters, literal backstabbings and satirical bent. The “Complete Collection” edition includes two versions of the film and its admittedly disappointing sequel.

ALSO OUT ON DVD

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy
