Here’s a flashback of Sarah Palin’s decision to block a ban on gay benefits in Alaska, where she’s governor.
From Bilerico via LGBT for Obama:
Palin vetoed HB 4001. Before you get too excited, she signed HB 4002 – to put benefits up to a non-binding vote of the people. Palin also stated that while she believed in HB 4001, her advisors had told her it was unconstitutional. Rather than go through the court costs, she vetoed the bill. Yeah, she’s no ally.
The Obama-loving gays also pass on word that Ralph Reed and his Christian Coalition are “ecstatic” over the Palin pick.
An Other Greek
Isn’t McCain such a “class act”?
First that “sincere” congratulatory video for Obama (well, actually it was a very public commercial sales pitch aimed at a mass audience, but let’s pretend it was an honest gracious concession).
And now Ms. Palin!
Women must be thrilled!!
Does it matter that this former beauty queen would work to strip women’s rights away?
Heck no!
She is “real”: She likes to hunt and fish and play sports!!
McCain is such a maverick! Palin is such a great leader!
I am spinning from the pundits “analyzing” this, and basically finding a thousand words to say the same thing:
“Are American women shallow and superficial enough to let the presence (image?) of a woman placate their egos enough to vote Republican, even though it is clearly against their own best interests?”
Are they?
—————————————————-
Hummgbird
I’m a straight woman, have two gay brothers, and am a Republican. There … that’s declared.
So you would have us believe that women would be shallow and superficial if we support a woman for VP?
Does that mean that if you are a black male you would be shallow and superficial to support a man who claims to be black for President? Genealogical research has proven that Obama is more white than black and definitely more Arab than black.
So hmmmm, does race or sex really matter? Only if you want to yell RACISM.
One good thing that could come out of an Obama presidency — after four years of Obama blacks in this country (who maybe never had an ancestor enslaved) who refuse to work, refuse to be self-supporting, fight amongst themselves, look to the government to solve their problems and blame anyone else for all their trials and tribulations will finally see that it is their own poor choices in life that bring them down.

IMHO .. the Palin hubby is hot – just saw some pics on CNN.
emb
Hummingbird, no, it wouldn’t be shallow and superficial to support a woman for VP–just THIS woman.
The Dems ran a woman 25 years ago, so this is hardly trail-blazing. And your racist “analysis” of “geneological research” is as irrelevant to the question of whether or not to vote for Obama as Miss Congeniality’s vagina is to whether or not to take her seriously as next in line to the Presidency.
I mean, seriously, THIS is the best mccain could come up with as next in line to be POTUS?
Shocking.
CHURCHILL-Y
Voted YES on prohibiting same-sex marriage.
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA): Vote to prohibit marriage between members of the same sex in federal law, and provide that no state is required to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Define ‘marriage’ as ‘between one man and one woman.’
Reference: Bill HR 3396 ; vote number 1996-280 on Sep 10, 1996
Neither Joe or Obama has signed on as co-sponsor of the Uniting American Families Act, a proposal by Manhattan Congressman Jerrold Nalder and Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy that would allow the foreign same-sex partners of American citizens to achieve citizenship on parity with foreign different-sex spouses.
Nor has Biden signed on to a bill first introduced during the current session of Congresss, the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2007, which would extend the full range of employee spousal benefits to the same-sex partner of federal workers. The bill introduced in the House by Wisconsin Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, an out lesbian Democrat, is sponsored by Connecticut Independent Joe Lieberman.

It is actually scary to imagine Sarah Palin as the leader of the free world. Its equally scaary to see this is the McCain’s judgement in the first major decision he has made.

Subject: logoonline ask fraud question too
http://visiblevote08.logoonline.com/2007/08/29/immigration-rights-nadler-tells-it-like-it-is-whats-up-obama/#comments
“What he didn’t say, though (and what he might not
know), was that only Obama supported it with a
caveat.
On his HRC questionnaire, he wrote, “As someone who
believes that homosexual
couples should have the same legal rights as married
couples and that our immigration laws
should unite families, I support the Uniting
American
Families Act in concept. But I also
believe that changes need to be made to the bill to
minimize the potential for fraud and abuse
of the immigration system.”
Changes? What changes? The bill does nothing but
give
gays and lesbians the EXACT SAME rights as straight
couples (along with the same burdens of proof),
simply
adding “permanent partners” where now the language
says “spouse.”
Let’s note, too, that Obama didn’t sign on as a
co-sponsor.
When asked about politicos who say they don’t
support
something fully because of fraud concerns (with no
mention of Obama), Nadler responded that fraud is a
red herring.
“It’s insincerity. They say ‘fraud’ when they’re
opposed to a bill and they don’t want to come out
and
say the real reason they’re opposed.”
Sen. Obama: Care to rethink your position?”

Yikes Hummingbird, lump whole groups of people together much?
Anyway, it WOULD be hypocritical for women to support Palin – somebody who opposes abortion rights EVEN in cases of rape and incest. Holy crap.

To EMB:
Today was the first time I have ever heard of Sarah Palin. The research I’ve come up with thus far is very positive. I like her willingness to fight the system and stand for what she believes.
I didn’t say I would support her … only that I won’t condemn her based on the fact that she is a woman. And I sure as heck won’t vote for Obama just because he yells “CHANGE” at every opportunity. Fact is the U.S. will have a new President and Vice President to be sworn into office in January. Do I think, at this juncture, she is a more favorable VP candidate than Joe Biden — you’d better believe it. Obama wants to talk about CHANGE, but he picks an old white man for his running mate … safe choice. McCain is an old white man and he chooses a young woman as his running mate. So … what’s the diff? Both are playing a political game.
An Other Greek
bummer for your two gay brothers…

Harriet Miers
I won’t condemn her based on the fact that she is a woman.
Who the hell is saying that, except maybe some NASCAR McCain supporters?
Matt
I look at this election this way. If Obama/Biden wins my rights might improve. If McCain/Paulin win, my wallet stays fat. Either way I’m happy. Go whoever wins!!!
rayrayj
Despite the fact that there is a Green Party, and a Social Party, and a Liberterian Party the only votes that will move a Presidential candidate forward are the votes for a Republican or a Democrat. That said there are some very real differences between the Candidates. Although neither candidate supports everything I would like him to support. Based on my personal values and my readings of the pros and cons, the evidence falls overwhelmingly in favor of Obama. Based on issues such as abortion rights, on basic civil liberties, on a tax and spending plan that will offer some relief to middle income America, on health care (as a cancer survivor this is extremely important to me), and most importantly on the probability that the next president will appoint more than one Supreme Court Justice, I am much less afraid of what Obama/Biden might do than I am of what McCain/Palin might do.
GoodBuddy
I think the Republicans have been brilliant in their VP choice. One is the timing. By announcing this today, this has totally taken the focus off of Obama’s speech. And by choosing someone who has limited experience, this highlights Obama’s own lack of experience.
I personally think the vote on Proposition 8 in California is far more important to the gay community than the choice for President. This is a Democratic year and there are indications that there may be more than 60 Democrat Senators. Even if McCain wins, he will not be able to govern in the same way that Bush has.
Paul
Golly, I sure am glad she has an undergraduate degree in journalism. I’d hate for the second-in-line to know anything about that pesky law ‘n stuff.
Ridiculous choice. Ridiculous.
AlliSon
I’m sold. As an educated woman in my late thirties I’m going to make no bones or excuses about my support for such a great choice. If other groups make their decisions based on people like them being on the ticket why I as a proud woman should not? No one is going to make me feel ashamed or silence my vote, its about time this country had a woman in the White House and Palin sure as hell will make a great VP. Sarah Palin you got my vote and I hope to see you in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue making all little girls know that they can reach for the stars and the highest office on the land without their gender being an impediment or obstacle, a proud day for all.
Darth Paul
AlliSon, you are a perfect example of why feminism has turned to sh!t in the US.
Paul Raposo
If Palin screws up, will McCain call her a cunt?
Daffyd
Wow, the Log Cabin Repukes are having a field day on here today… It’s absolutely pitiful to have to wade through all these republican shills.
I’m not going to let a person’s gender influence my vote one way or another – and Palin is an anti-Gay, anti-choice, right wing republican with no experience outside of being a mayor of a town of 9,000 and 2 years state level experience.
Anyone who says they support her just because she’s a woman is an idiot. If McCain picked a Gay man with the same lack of experience and background, any Gay people who supported that choice would be an idiot.
And Obama and Biden may not be perfect, but I’d rather have them choosing the next Supreme Court Justices over McCain, who has supported Bush 90% of the time.
If this is the level of decision making McCain is planning to make, we can say good-bye to choice, and any hope of LGBT rights…
seitan-on-a-stick
No-one can climb the Mountain that is Sarah Palin’s hair. Democrats just got screwed up the ass without a condom! She’s red meat for blue collars and will get YOU to vote against your best interests. Very Reagan! Pure Rove! Genius! We are screwed again!

A shrewd, political choice but a pathetic candidate for the highest office in the free world if ever there was one. The people at SNL are going to have a field day.
Daffyd
Yep, the Neanderthals have found the place… Half-negro? What is this, 1940? Hey, Ron, isn’t there a KKK meeting you need to go to? Oh wait, the McCain/Palin rally is already over today….
marco channing
Why did John McCain pick the actress from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” to be his running mate? I thought McCain was anti-celebrity.
marco channing
This nomination confirms that Bush and McCain are one in the same. No wonder the RNC is in the twin cities.
Since gay marriage is gaining legs, they can’t trot out the Constitutional ban on gay marriage like they did in 2004. So this year, it’s Roe. v Wade. But, they didn’t deliver on gay marriage and they won’t deliver on Roe v. Wade. McCain will deliver more of what Bush did:
War
outsourced jobs
Continued oil dependency
the biggest government expansion in history
the biggest deficit in history
the biggest income disparity since the Depression
Record gas prices
Unregulated and toxic toys
Failed banks
An Executive Branch that is above the law
Another 9/11
And Osama bin Laden remaining a free man
What an exciting VP pick. What a wonderful world they are offering. Can’t wait until McCain keels over in office and we get nuked because his VP becomes President.
Brian Miller
Despite the fact that there is a Green Party, and a Social Party, and a Liberterian Party the only votes that will move a Presidential candidate forward are the votes for a Republican or a Democrat.
Mostly because Americans voluntarily herd themselves onto the Republicrats’ and Demopublicans’ plantations and then wonder why they’re treated like slaves by the two major parties.
The reality is that on gay issues, in the areas that matter — actual votes — there is literally no difference between the McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden tickets.
They craft their “messages” for their audiences, but their votes are the same.
They both voted against a constitutional amendment against gay marriage.
They both voted for the anti-gay military policy.
They both voted for the anti-gay DOMA bill.
There’s not a hill of beans worth of difference between the two tickets on the issues that matter to gay people.
Just a lot of talk.
And talk is cheap.
marco channing
“They both voted for the anti-gay military policy.
They both voted for the anti-gay DOMA bill.”
“Don’t ask, don’t tell” was voted on in 1993. DOMA was voted on in 1996. How could Obama have voted for them?
Jack Jett
The Mayor of Cooterville. Next VP.
For Repukes the only requirement to be VP is to have a working uterus. Now watch as the dems get all pussified and will not take her on.
Brian Miller
“Don’t ask, don’t tell” was voted on in 1993. DOMA was voted on in 1996. How could Obama have voted for them?
Biden voted for them. Last I checked, he was part of the ticket…
marco channing
Oh, I see. You are using Biden to weaken Obama’s pro-gay stance. Misread your post.
“They craft their “messages” for their audiences, but their votes are the same.”
I’m sorry, did I miss the part in Biden’s speech in which he discussed gay & lesbian issues?
Obama and Biden are two different people. His voting record does not become Obama’s by default and more than Cindy McCain is automatically an adulterer just because John McCain is.
Dgreatone
Looks like the LGBT Democrats are scared of the people voting – again. Are LGBT Democrats arguments so weak they cannot be debated in a public forum where everybody is invited?
I don’t see Obama or Biden bending over backwards to help gays with anything. If Obama likely does nothing for gays, gay Democrats will sit on their butts and do and say nothing just like they did when Bill Clinton gave us DADT and DOMA.
Marco Channing
“Looks like the LGBT Democrats are scared of the people voting – again. Are LGBT Democrats arguments so weak they cannot be debated in a public forum where everybody is invited?”
Huh? I feel like I am reading a foreign language. Why would LGBT Dems be afraid of people voting? Why would we be afraid of a debate.
This must be some GOP troll speak that sounded good on paper but was not tested on an actual LGBT before posting.
Marco Channing
The GOP is sh*tting there pant sooooo bad. Look at the huge influx of trolls on this board since yesterday.

Case and point our resident idiot Churchill-Y says in another post
And this stupid queen is suppose to be a big Hillary supporter?
This Alaskan chic ain’t shit like Hillary…..BUT OH WAIT I forgot there is a similarity. They’re both WHITE!
Girls get over your evilnes for it will get you NO WHERE with it! Truth be told if Obama loses his pockets will get PHAT like The Clinton’s did when they left office because him and wife will be held in HIGH REGARD and will hit the book tours and speaking engagements making $$$$$$
And you will still be waiting for Hillary.

Hummingbird: you sound more like the Vulture Queen from Hell> How did you wonder off ontop this sight to spew your racist , ignorant shrapnal around a place wher you are unwanted.
You truly are dense; while I know that given the general protracted dimwittedness of Republican candidates actoss the board, there isn’t a whole lot to pick from acrossthe board, the issue with this Alaskan tart (or fart?)is that she just doesn’t have any brains and looks like a makup model for the felatrix line of lip doo’s for’08. I don’t know how you would know the exact makup of Obama’s lineage: “Arab” is not a lineage, nor is black: it’s a sin color.
I don’t know what the point is of your self righteous wailing on. It is always easy for people who have been blessed to point out the negative side of some of the people who they feel superior too. It sounds as if, in intellect, you have a long way to go in comparing yourself favorably to anyone appart from your merganser predecessors.
Toot your horn where somone wants to listen.

Voting for Palin when she’s being used as a tool to appeal to some women who should think before they do anything is pure idiocy. Yes I, even as a gay man, would like to see a woman achieve the top spot.
However, would you like to see a woman getting to the top JUST because she’s a woman ? I need actions, I need confidence, I need someone who knows where she goes and why she wants to do it.
I wouldn’t want my child to look up to a woman who used her gender to get next to the top (because let’s face it, she’s just a VP). Voting for the duo would be like saying, ok men can still use woman to get wherever they want and get away with it.
Sierra Gent
For anyone interested in what will happen to our Constitution If Obama is elected consider this: Conservatives are in favor of appointing federal judges and Supreme Court Justices who support the original understanding or intent of the Constitution. There are many papers available to researchers that vividly demonstrate their original intent and why the language in The Constitution was written as it was written. If the original intent is not followed and Liberal judges and justices are appointed by Obama what you will get is a country ruled by judicial fiat. If that is the case we might as well just throw our Constitution in the garbage heap because It will not have any meaning any more. A perfect example was Justices minority opinion that said the Second Amendment did not give individual Americans the right to keep and bear arms even for hunting or self defense. The intent is very easy to understand when you examine statements made at the time of the writing of The Constitution. George Washington, Patrick Henry and John Adams among a slew of others were adament in their belief that the second amendment applied to the very individual people of America not just the militia. Is Stevens getting senile? Has he read the history of the Second Amendment? Or is he the typical liberal who would love to disarm the American public. Go Palin and McCain
Sierra Gent
I Can’t wait till moose stew is on the White House menu.
Ryan
@Sierra Gent: The wording of the Constitution was made intentionally broad in order to allow for interpretation. It is fewer than 8,000 words, which makes it one of the briefest constitutions in the world. As a point of comparison, the Constitution of the state of California is over 100 standard letter-size pages in length.
Further, as you may or may not know, the writing of the Constitution was contentious between two factions – the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Using the “papers” that the founders left behind to interpret the Constitution requires taking sides in that dispute. In short, interpreting the Constitution through “intent” is anything but cut-and-dried.
Finally, how can you possibly imagine that Obama could do any more damage to our Constitution than has already been done to it by 8 years of George W. Bush? McCain’s obvious intention to continue Bush’s policies will certainly not help either!
Marco Channing
Obama is a threat to The Constitution, Sierra? Are you high? That’s about as accurate as calling McCain a young man.
Have you been paying attention for the last 8 years? We have moved further away from The Constitution than any time in our history. McCain was appalled that The Supreme Court upheld habeas corpus in Guantanamo. What national security goal has Guantanamo accomplished? Convicting Bin Laden’s driver of…driving? Imagine if habeas corpus was thrown out. We might have been able to prosecute Bin Laden’s tailor.
McCain supports Bush’s concept of a constitutional ban on gay marriage, which would be the first Amendment in our history to REMOVE rights, rather than add them. McCain and Palin want to overturn Roe v. Wade. Bush is trying to have ALL birth control considered abortion, which McCain and Palin support. Palin’s own teenage daughter is pregnant. How will this country deal with the financial impact of the increase in pregnant high school students, not to mention, the rise in HIV infections that result from their policies?
The so-called “maverick” McCain supports Bush 90% of the time.
90% of corrupt Attorney Generals, a politicized DOJ, an Executive Branch that is above the law, ordering the FBI to forge documents to take us to war, ignoring subpoenas, deregulating all industries, altering scientific evidence about the effects of global warming on human beings, exposing CIA agents whose spouses are critical of the administration, putting 6 year-olds on a terror watch list, and endorsing torture and rendition is a far more terrifying scenario than any limits placed on assault weapons that Obama might endorse. Not to mention Palin’s endorsement of teaching creationism in school–separation of church and state anyone?
By picking Palin, McCain proved that he is a GOP tool and a Rove puppet. He wanted to pick Lieberman o Romney. Rove would not let him. Country first? My ass. If he cared about this country, he would not caved by picking a running mate whose only foreign relations experience consists of living in a state that is geographically close to Russia. McCain does not even know the difference between sunnis and shites. Palin probably couldn’t even find Afganistan on a map.
The assertion that McCain is a “maverick” is about as accurate as calling Carmen Electra an Oscar-caliber actress.
If Palin ever has to step into the role of President (which is highly likely, considering McCain’s age and history with cancer), I guarantee you that the U.S. will be nuked because of her incompetence.
