Taking a decided stand against IRS rules prohibiting tax-exempt organizations from endorsing a political candidate, a number of preachers used yesterday’s sermon to back John McCain.
As we reported last week, the fiercely anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund organized the push, called “Pulpit Freedom Sunday.” Apparently God’s more frightening than Uncle Sam…
CNN ran a story on the matter this weekend, which we’ve included above.

We need to revoke the tax-exempt status of these douchebag congregations ASAP. This is chickensh!t. I’d feel the same even if they endorsed Obama.

What would be nice is seeing the resulting court case they’re hoping to invoke go all the way to the supreme court, and having tax exempt status declared unconstitutional for ALL churches based on a violation of the first amendment separation of church and state.

Revoke their tax status AFTER Nov 4th, not before.
They want to act like poor put upon tragic Christians,,,,don’t give them ammunition.

Heh… Stevious, that is devious! (:

Stevious is right on target. Take away all those tax exempt statuses and you’ll have the 700 Billion to save Wall Street’s ass without costing the taxpayers a penny. That really works for me.

Remove their churches tax exempt status and then hang the clergy men high in the steeples.

I’m not by any means a religious person (in the traditional sense), but what I find sad in all of this is that there are literally thousands of very small churches, who really do care about and aid the less-fortunate in their areas (here in inner-city Cleveland, for example) which would, in all likelihood, cease to exist due to economic shifts from loss of tax-exempt status. These insitutions, and those they help on a daily basis (meal programs for the homeless, etc), would become the sacrificial lambs for the few ultra-rightwingnut clergymen who insist on spewing political shit from the pulpit. Self-serving egomaniacs.

TAX THE CHURCHES!
Raf
If they can preach this with their tax-exempt status, why is my student organization forbidden to print “Vote For Equality in November” on T-shirts with university funds?
They told us the university can’t support a political cause or they’d lose federal support. Yet churches are now supporting candidates with their tax-exempt status.
tommy
They can speak about anything they want THEY MUST PAY TAXES and stop being called a church. Simple!

What’s hilarious is the US is DOING THEM A FAVOR with the tax exemption. They seem to think it’s some “God given” right to not pay taxes.

Their is an ad in california for Prop 8 which claims if it does not pass, churches will lose their tax exempt status.
