This week the GOP was dealt a massive blow in the bungling of its seven-years-in-the-making health care bill.
At the heart of the matter was the fact that Americans flat-out did not want the American Health Care Act to pass. In fact, it polled at just 17% approval.
Related: #KillTheBill floods Twitter; Americans REALLY don’t want Trumpcare
Why? Because it would effectively destroy the concept of health care for millions upon millions of Americans, and gravely increase the cost for even more.
How about we take this to the next level?

Which sure makes this 2013 gaffe from House Speaker Paul Ryan seem awfully interesting:
putuunder2
Ryan is such a D%$#!

The rustbelt is catching on to these Republicans. That promulgation of Goldman Sachs investors that are infesting the Trump Administration will see to it that the rustbelt never trusts the GOP ever again. Wake up. Your union is next.
Sluggo2007
Goldman Sachs investors are a stupid lot. They quickly forget how investment bankers (led by Goldman Sachs) took down the country’s economy in 2008 with their greed.
ChrisK
Yeah, maybe a slip but I have no doubt it’s what this shithead and his puppet masters want.
natekerchel
So trump is psychic us he? How come he never saw his own complete humiliation in the past two days over his plans to make more profits for health care providers? Not only his own humiliation of course – also that of the Speaker, whose job it was to get his own people onside. Both of them are greatly weakened by this debacle – and deservedly so. However, I slightly dread which minority is going to be targeted for retaliatory punishment by the frustrated narcissist – someone will have to pay for his bruised ego. But for now I am happy to celebrate this epic defeat for the illegitimate occupant of the White House and his vile coterie of repulsive ‘fake’ human beings.
Bob LaBlah
Well, now we all know why the GOP never flaunted their alternative plan.
1EqualityUSA
Trump had better hope the Office of the Federal Grim Reaper isn’t one of the cabinet jobs that went unfilled in that inept transition. It will sure mess up the serf’s budget to not thin the crop of “undesirables” with his health bill. True colors are an educational experience. Vote for Democrats in 2018.
Gian Paul Graziosi
http://www.snopes.com/paul-ryan-destroy-health-care/
This article is unethical since it’s implication is false. A longer version of the cited video shows that Paul Ryan is referring to the ACA as to what is destroying the healthcare system.
ChrisK
Go away troll. Snopes is a right wing conspiracy site for nutcases such as yourself.
mhoffman953
@ChrisK LOL Snopes is now a right wing conspiracy site? HAHAHA
Snopes is about left wing as Huffington Post or the Washington Post
DMRX
Obviously that’s what he MEANT, but it’s not what he SAID. Hence referencing the “Freudian slip” in the title.
Quit trying to defend this joker. You’re making a fool of yourself.
ChrisK
@mhoffman953
Funny that they only attack Democrats and especially Obama and totally kiss Trumps ass. Yeah, real left wing.
DarkZephyr
We know its not what he intended to say, Derp. As DMRX pointed out, hence the term “Freudian Slip”.
Doug
Hey ChrisK, how about YOU trolling somewhere else? You sound like one of those self-righteous black-and-white thinking people who call themselves “liberals” and make the rest of us look bad. We have enough news on an every day basis to screw Trump with but this one is clearly phony. The video was shot in 2013, for Chrissakes! If you can call Snopes a conservative website just for pointing that out, you’re not much good to any of us. Ridiculous.
Mandrake
Despite what the polls want to say, and they’ve been notoriously wrong before, I doubt the majority of Americans even know what was in the AHCA. If they were anti-Republican, they’d automatically say they were against it while not knowing a thing about it. Many people were against it because it involved the Big C word: CHANGE. I bet any of us could ask any number of our acquaintances to give us just 2 components of the bill, and you’d hear crickets.
DarkZephyr
The polls don’t WANT to say what they say, they simply say what is. They are not sentient beings.
DarkZephyr
And if the AHCA really is the greatest thing on earth like you seem to be implying, they should have explained it differently than they did at Townhalls across the damned country. Because even when it WAS explained, people hated it, including many Republican constituents.
sami_neal
I’d just like to point out that…it was defeated because it didn’t have enough votes. In a republican senate. In a republican house. In a republican whitehouse. Sooooo I don’t need to know more about it. It was so bad that the REPUBLICANS said no. Of they had voted it in, not one person would be returning to office, not one. It decimated Medicare.
natekerchel
Mandrake – like your political master you display a breath-taking arrogance in asserting that the American public are too stupid or ignorant to have made a considered choice about trump’s health care proposals. Of course not everyone knows every detail, but people know when something stinks. They know when they are about to be screwed by the financial elite led by the tax avoider in chief. Just as 74% of them knew not to vote for the now completely humiliated loser infesting the Oval Office.
Mandrake
Good Morning, natekerchief! Well, I do indeed assert that the American public, or a majority of them anyway, had very little idea what was in the AHCA. And, I was not implying in my previous comment anything regarding the quality of the Bill whether good, bad, or mediocre. My only point was that the majority of the public had no idea what it was about, and I will hold to that. You need to come down off your elitist mountain and hob-nob with the masses. You’d learn I’m right.
natekerchel
Trump said – ‘We could not get one Democratic vote..so we pulled it’. It may have escaped trumps notice, but that is the job of the Democrats – to oppose his ridiculous proposals. Here they showed complete unity – unlike the other lot who are supposed to be on his side. It’s not the Democrats to blame for the fiasco – it’s trump and the Republicans for trying to get an ill conceived, ill considered, partisan, poor bashing, rich healthcare provider loving piece of garbage legislation. His side have a majority in both Houses – and he would have had even more problems trying to get it passed in the Senate. What does all this tell us? That even the Republicans knew it was a rushed, and unprofessional Bill that would have hurt more people than it helped. I said it before – they will support trump until their seats are in danger. That’s the only reason they opposed this – self interest.
Mandrake
Natekerchief, I’m shocked!! I think I may agree with you!
natekerchel
I knew we would eventually agree on something Mandrake – the law of averages said we had to. Unfortunately I read that before your previous post – and we are back on opposite sides again. The basic issue I have with what you say is that you tend to make gross generalisations abut people – including me. You can’t possibly know what people did or did not know and understand about this proposed legislation. I prefer to be more generous than you and allow that people do take notice of the important issues like their health care. It’s true I cant prove that, but you cant prove your contention either. So we have to call this one a draw I think. Oh but we won again – that’s 3 – 0 so far. I would also ask you to stop calling me elitist – I am not.
DCguy
Trump said. “Trump said – ‘We could not get one Democratic vote..so we pulled it’. ”
Gee, that’s funny, Obama was able to pass his healthcare bill WITHOUT Republican support. Guess he’s a better deal maker.
DCguy
Oh One more thing. Paul Ryan has NEVER been a smart guy. The GOP saw that Aaron Schock was getting a lot of attention but he was too young, so the GOP tried to push Ryan as “Cute” and he got a little play in GQ. So the GOP thought they had a face for the party, pushed him forward into leadership and then had to make up a lie that he was smart.
If you look at Ryan’s old budget it was all smoke and mirrors, it increased spending a gigantic amount and then relied on a Congress 10 years in the future to make massive budget cuts (Which would neever happen).
This healthcare bill he put together wasn’t much different. Ryan is just some nob whose not particularly smart, but right now he’s all the GOP has. LOL
Heywood Jablowme
It’s actually worse than that. Romney was undecided on who to choose as a running mate. And then the Wall Street Journal editorial board ORDERED him to choose Ryan. And he did!
Mo Bro
So . . .
When in 2008 Obama said he’d campaigned “in all 57 states,” wasn’t that likewise a Freudian slip referencing the 57 states of Islam . . . or was he just so clueless that he thinks the U.S. has 57 states?
(commence apoplectic defense of Obama in 3, 2, 1 . . . )
1EqualityUSA
This doesn’t deserve a response. Bye, pathetic grasper of straws.
DCguy
Oh look, the Anti-lgbt Trump Troll still desperately trying to change the topic.
You know, the Topic was, Captain Orange Julius couldn’t even get his own party to pass something that they HAD passed on about 50 votes over the last 8 years. Thought he was a deal maker.
Oh, as for a defense of Obama, nice try Troll, Obama needs no defense, but it is VERY telling that all of your posts make it VERY obvious that you desperately DON’T want to talk about Trump.
Heywood Jablowme
That is easily explained. Obama had just had a nice conversation with John Kerry and Theresa Heinz Kerry, which got him to thinking about the Heinz “57 Varieties.”
stuart_johnson
No, dumbass, it wasn’t a Freudian slip. A Freudian slip is when you accidentally let on to something that you think, but don’t want to reveal. He misspoke, that simple. You should understand simple being that you are so simple minded to fall for Republican lies.
Mr.M
There are 7 outlying territories that expand beyond our present states. Look at a map and deduct rationally or continue being a GOP dipstick.
Mo Bro
@MrM:
No, there are 4 incorporated territories, and 11 unincorporated.
Besides, territories aren’t states, regardless of how many there are.
So . . . Obama’s still either dumb or a Muzzy . . . . or a dumb Muzzy.
natekerchel
An ‘apoplectic’ defence of Obama is not necessary. No defence is necessary because there is nothing to defend. The problem for people like you Mo Bro is that you think everyone will behave like your political master by becoming enraged at the slightest provocation. Well, no. We are not emotionally unstable narcissistic sociopaths who lack the ability to control our responses. We are not living in an Obama Presidency now – and you cannot deflect from the wrong-doings or ineptitude of trump and his grizzly gang by harking back to it. We are dealing with the appalling situation caused by the politically illegitimate resident of the White House whose sole goal seems to be to cause chaos – the chosen political tactic of those who seek to direct attention away from their more dangerous or illegal actions. In this case – trumps ties to Russia. You see MO Bro no apoplectic defence – just straightforward commentary and opinion.
pudman56
I’d love to ad a comment but I just can’t stop laughing at just at his foot in mouth disease which he constantly treats the public to. Being originally from Milwaukee, I can only offer this apology for him…He is from Jainsville and trust me, that’s nothing to brag about. But it does represent his constituency, that much I’ll give him.
pudman56
sorry for the typo’s, but I think I got my point across
Dinodogstar
This is prob only interesting to me and the author, Dan, and my real name being “Dan” also, but I just posted the quote by Ryan, and used the exact same words and term, saying “While he probably misspoke, it was seemingly a Freudian slip.” Again, not really mattering, but i wrote that about an hour ago, having not read this piece from a day ago. Great minds think alike? There is a good news piece on reverbpress dot com, with Paul Ryan laughing about screwing over the sick and elderly. I’m still taken aback by this weird coincidence multiplied a few times over. I’m still smh, mouth open, and wondering HOW this could have happened… I only hope no one notices the connection, and calls me out for plagiarism like i’m Melania swiping Michelle’s words!
girldownunder
Ryan & the rest of those repug-blowhards have had their head’s in the public trough for so long they are completely & utterly devoid of compassion or the willingness to “do right by” the nation. THEY, enjoy the best-of-the-best of healthcare— the rest be damned!
This, is where I see the huge divide between repugs & people like Sen. Sanders or any democrat: they tax, but at least they want to give to all. repugs want it ALL, for themselves. They’re vile & sickening creatures- who exhibit traits of a malignant personality-disorder, mainly the inability to empathize.
justyouandi
Nope! Give me TrumpCare! Then maybe I won’t have the $7000 deductible and $1300 monthly premium that I’ve had with ObamaCare. And maybe I’ll be able to go back to the doctor I had gone to for decades before the “Affordable” Care Act. I once had a $500 deductible and monthly premiums of less than $300, but now I can’t afford to go to the doctor.
frankcar1965
Shit, what’s wrong with you? You sound like a time bomb ready to explode. You must have 10 kids or something. I know people who have the ACA and while it is not cheap it’s nothing like that. Damn, maybe a bullet in the head would make more sense.
justyouandi
By the way, it went down in the House because it wasn’t as market based and patient-centric as it can be. It was too much like ObamaCare.
stuart_johnson
So, concerning the ACA ,the government mandating insurance coverage, and lining up the customers for the insurance companies with a website, isn’t a market based solution? As for patient-centric, because of the ACA, labs (for example) are covered. Before the ACA, unless you paid a lot of money, things like labs and xrays weren’t completely covered or covered at all, unless you could afford very expensive coverage. Ambulance rides came with a minimum co-pay of $100. And, from the early 80s to the time the ACA started, premiums rose 15 to 20% yearly and some years more than once.
The house bill wasn’t “too much like the ACA”. While it had two similarities (concerning pre-existing conditions and staying on your parents plan until age 26), it did away with the mechanisms to fund those things. Look, if you want shitty health insurance, there nare plans out there that will accomodate you in the private market. I know it may distress you, but some of the laws of the ACA will still effect your coverage like, free labs and preventative care. If you are stupid enought to think those things are somehow tyranny, than nobody will make you take advantage of them.
DuMaurier
Well, thank God the bill died, or it would have been chaos. All these years of “Repeal and replace!” and it turns out they actually DIDN’T have anything to “replace” ACA WITH, until the last second when they panicked and realized they had to come up with something. The crucial thing about this whole exercise that’s being overlooked is that Trump didn’t want the bill; I knew that as soon as I read the outlines of it. It’s nothing like what he’s (unrealistically) promised; he did none of the minimal things presidents do to get something passed into law. Trump’s relieved right now.
girldownunder
And like a TRUE narcissistic-personality-disordered patient, he has made his attempt to deflect ANY blame for the thing dying it’s rightful death— trying to foist off the whole sorry repug-trainwreck as “the democrats fault”. He’ll then dump any residual aftermath onto Ryan– because that’s what these lunatics do.
Chump will NEVER admit how incompetent he is–> never. He would gut his family if he thought it would gain him points. He, is a true sociopath and a dangerous one.
I’ve had one of these in my life & I KNOW that people who haven’t really have no idea the level of evil in them. I hope the public wakes up sooner than later, when the knife is already firmly in & twisting.
natekerchel
Spot on @girldownunder – people think that he has a mental illness – well he may have a mental illness – but what he has is a personality disorder, for which there is no cure, although some claim it is possible. They can never admit they are wrong because that would threaten the elaborate illusion they have created for and about themselves. That is why, like trump, they lash out. It’s a distorted self-defence. I know that people say he is dangerous but I am not sure they really understand just how dangerous he is. You get some idea when you look at some of his actions so far – the attacks on the media and judiciary for example. Classic behaviour for a narcissistic sociopath and comparable to infamous characters like Stalin, Hitler, Mao, KIm Il Sung, Mugabe and Putin. Nixon was another case. The only variable in our favor is that trump, like Nixon, is constrained by the other branches of government – examples of which we have been seeing in the past few weeks. But we should not underestimate how much damage this man can still do.
1EqualityUSA
Protesters conglomerated in offices and town hall meetings and were influential. “Indivisible,” started by those who worked with members of Congress, coached others on what works and what doesn’t. Senator Schumer says that the country isn’t as far right as the GOP. So, now what? Suddenly sabotage? Insurance companies are going to drag their feet and act out in the middle of the grocery store. Let’s ignore them and fix Obamacare. It’s here to stay. Billionaires, if saving $200 grand is driving your decision to deprive others of care, good luck on your deathbed.
natekerchel
Then problem is that if you believe, as I do, that there is no ‘after-life’ and therefore, no kind of ‘punishment’ for bad behaviour then the miscreants get away with it. They will not give a toss on their deathbeds for anything they have done, because they lack a normal human conscience. Trump is the clearest example of this class of being in the White House at the moment – the narcissist. Does he care about consequences – I doubt it. I doubt he is even believes in any kind of God. His one aim in life is to satisfy his own desires – at whatever cost to anyone else. We need to find a way to remove him from the White House. But it has to be seen to be beyond question that it is legal. If you want to punish trump then attack his fantasy world – expose the delusions and lies. Looking back in history – that is what had to happen at the end of World War 2 and the de-Nazification of Germany. Hitler had to be exposed as a common criminal responsible for the deaths of millions. Similarly with trump – the USA has to be ‘de-trumped’. He has to be exposed for the liar and fantasist and incompetent fool that he is.
trusgold
Ryan is so far over his head as Speaker it’s funny to watch. He will get shit canned either not get re-elected or kicked out as Speaker. His buddy Reince Priebus is a fiasco as Chief of Staff give him til July.
