The new Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity) film Philomena is captivating audiences worldwide with its flawless blend of drama and comedy. Stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan bring charming odd-couple chemistry to the real life story of Philomena Lee (Dench) and her not-so-lighthearted quest to track down a long lost son. Opening nationwide November 27, it’s the perfect family outing for the post-Thanksgiving weekend (yes, even that mildly homophobic alcoholic uncle). But don’t take our word for it. Here’s a sampling of what some of the critics have to say (not to mention an impressive 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes):
New York Observer (Rex Reed):
It’s profoundly moving and thoroughly mind provoking, but despite the poignant subject matter, I promise you will not leave Philomena depressed. I’ve seen it twice and felt exhilarated, informed, enriched, absorbed and optimistic both times.”
Empire (Damon Wise):
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
A terrific, sophisticated comedy that tackles serious issues with a lightness of touch and a spirit of steel…
Entertainment Weekly (Chris Nashawaty):
Dench and Coogan’s chemistry is undeniably great. In the end, he manages to give her the answers she seeks and she manages to give him a heart.
The Hollywood Reporter (Deborah Young):
Stephen Frears is in full possession of his filmmaking talent in Philomena, one of his most pulled-together dramas in years.

PRINCE OF SNARKNESS aka DIVKID
Christ almighty, enough already! They’ve more than got their money’s worth out of you. You’ve killed any interest for me in this film with all this shameless shilling. Advertising banners is one thing..but THIS is shitty and intrusive and beyond crass.
