After Dylan Meehan and Brad Taylor were voted Cutest Couple by her high school classmates, 18-year-old Chelsea posted the image to her Tumblr, which quickly went viral:
Two of my best friends won Cutest Couple of our senior class. First time in my school history a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school.
In a letter to The Huffington Post, Dylan and Brad wrote:
This whole thing has been a bit surreal for us because we have been raised to believe that love is love. We never realized that our happiness and openness would inspire so many individuals. The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal … When we started dating a year [ago], the thought of a photo of us traveling throughout the world would be a bit frightening, but now we are proud to be part of the LGBT community.

I still don’t get why America still has these weird competitions of who is the cutest couple, the most successful student and so on. It just seems like an unnecessary spark of competition of how you look. Just my opinion.

“The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal”
Isn’t that belief exactly what the right-wing has been accusing us of trying to foster? I think their number one fear has been coming into fruition. Poor cons.

So to be an activist you have to be cute and blond only?…..I notice alot of minorities gays are getting kicked under the bus these days…
Charlie in Charge
@balehead: Do you have some knowledge of gay minority couples that should have won at this particular high school? Neither is especially blond but yes being cute is probably a reasonable qualifier in a category titled: cutest couple.

Being left-handed – being black or being gay is just as natural. It is a sometimes rare occurrence to fall in Love and to hold that person in your heart and be loved in return … it is something that should be celebrated! If it is love between two guys or two girls … all the better … it takes even more courage to defend that LOVE!

I hope they manage to stay together for life. This is a fun story.

Who’s still with his (or her) high school sweetheart today? Probably not too many. These guys are seniors, so high school must be ending pretty soon. No mention of what they’re doing next (or where).
Gigi Gee
@balehead: They’re cute gingers. So…no.

@Charlie in Charge: “being cute is probably a reasonable qualifier in a category titled: cutest couple.”
hahaha, best response 😛

UPDATE: In a video posted on USAToday, Dylan and Brad reveal they’re both going to NYU in the fall… cutiepies and smartypants, apparently.

I reference to “The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal.”
It is sad that these two great guys have to rely on the support of others in order to feel normal. But it is heartening to see progress whenever and wherever it happens. Good Luck to both of you and stay in school until you get your degrees.

While it does our cause no harm to have eye candy like this being in the high school proms, let us remember not everyone is heartrendingly beautiful, and we have our place in the sun too.

A lesbian couple took cutest couple at my high school last year… I wasn’t sure if it was going to raise issues since the voting page asked to vote for 1 girl and 1 boy in each category, but I guess no one cared haha
