Shortly after snatching this season’s Amazing Race crown, team/life mates Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge were inundated with thousands of congratulatory messages, but one in particular, from the mother of a gay 12-year-old boy, resonated with them:
“I’m sure you guys are way too busy to read this, but I want you to know how inspirational you two are to my 12 year old son. He is gay and is dealing with bullying and harassment in middle school. It’s so hard to see him going through this, and sometimes the “It Gets Better” message is lost on a 12 year old who feels that middle school will never end…We cheered you on every Sunday night and agonized every time you had difficulties. My son was so incredibly thrilled when you two won last night (as was I!). Thank you for helping him see that not only DOES it get better, it gets AMAZING.”
No stranger to being underdogs, Josh and Brent wrote to Colin on their blog, “we know that you’re doing your best, and working as hard as you can in school.” They also shared Colin’s mom’s note with their fellow Amazing Racers, who wanted Colin to know that he too is “amazing”:

Captain proton
it was all good till “the Chips”.
2 half naked men sending an encouraging message to a 12 year old boy – I’m sure no conservative will even dream of exploiting that image…

@Captain proton: Having their shirts off was shown a number of times during the show – particularly when they were soliciting donations while playing an organ grinder machine. You are just making a mountain out of a mohill and should be ashamed at your low level attempt at humor. Thumbs up for the “Chips”, the winners, and everyone else sending messages to this young gay kid!

What a great story! This is why I love Queerty…and now the Amazing Race as well.
