BENEFIT HAUS

Manhattan’s Schubert Alley became a impromptu pet store on Saturday as Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters hosted the 14th annual Broadway Barks, a star-studded dog and cat adopt-a-thon benefiting New York City animal shelters and pet-adoption agencies.

Broadway performers who braved the heat for the cause included Smash‘s  Megan Hilty (above), Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur), Tracie Bennett (End of the Rainbow), Stephanie J. Block (Anything Goes), Michael Cerveris (Evita), Adam Chanler-Berat (Peter and the Starcatcher), Joel Grey (Anything Goes), Jessica Hecht and Carol Kane (Harvey), Jeremy Jordan (Newsies),  Angela Lansbury (The Best Man), Linda Lavin (The Lyons), Norm Lewis and Audra McDonald (Porgy and Bess), Rita Moreno, Bebe Neuwirth, Rory O’Malley and Andrew Rannells (Book of Mormon), and Ben Vereen.

Peters, a longtime animal advocate told the New York Post about her pit bull, Stella:

“I named her Stella after A Streetcar Named Desire—‘Stel-la!’ She was about five months old when my husband found her at a shelter… I didn’t know the breed. The American pit bull terrier used to be a family dog—they were called ‘the nanny dog’ — and Stella loves babies. When I had a party for A Little Night Music, we put Stella in her crate where she could see everything. Someone brought a baby, and she tried to kiss the baby through the wires! She has the biggest heart and soul, and that’s what these dogs are really about. They stay with us during the hard times. They’re called companions for a reason.”

We totally would’ve been down there adopting a furry friend but we’ve already got Noah’s arc going on in our apartment. To learn more about fostering or adopting a pet in need, find a local shelter through the SPCA or Humane Society of America.
