As they have for the past 21 years, the Solstice Cyclists kicked off the Fremont Solstice Parade in Seattle on Saturday, June 16, when overcast skies and temperatures in the 60s didn’t stop bold participants from stripping naked and painting their bodies for a brisk spin down Market Street. What a cool way to celebrate the arrival of summer!

Guess I am an old prude but I would not take my kids (especially little girls) to watch a bunch of guys with their junk hanging out. Bad taste in my opinion! It’s okay at an all gay or even all adult event but certain standards should apply where children are concerned.

Mostly nude men that I can see, but maybe that’s due to being on this site. I still say that little children, particularly little girls don’t need to witness naked grown men with their dicks swinging in the breeze. Yes eveyone has body, including children, but there is a big difference between an adult’s body and a child’s body. I an not against nudity, I go to nude beaches, but I do not like seeing children on these beaches and stay clear of them. Many people in these nude beaches agree. @Bob: Perhaps the parents who bring their children to these sort of events are teaching them that there should be no shame or discomfort attached to the human body. If parents are open and communicative about nudity, it helps to remove the mystery and may avoid body-issue stigmas as kids grow older.

To those not familiar with our city, Fremont is an enclave of Seattle. It is basically the area of Seattle where San Francisco’s Haight/Ashbury decided to retire. This is an annual event that is revered and well publicized throughout Seattle.. It is predominantly heterosexual people, pretty evenly split between men and women. Also to get to this area you need to make a special trip. There is no accidental viewing by anyone “just passing by”. The few kids I have seen at this event in years past seemed completely happy, comfortable and content. The kids there are not children of high strung conservatives, but kids whose parents have raised them to be comfortable with the human body.

I am truly sorry that you were the victim of sexual abuse as a child. It was heinous of the person who committed this crime against you.
That said, did you ever stop to consider that the very reason he committed this crime, may well have been due to the brainwashing and conditioning that made him feel ashamed of his body and his sexual urges? So much so, in fact, that he became totally incapable of expressing his sexual desires in a mature, socially acceptable way and had to resort to the only sexual situation in which he would have total control which was by forcing himself onto a totally helpless child?
What this man did to you was certainly the inappropriate actions of a pedophile and there is absolutely no excuse for what he did. He obviously needs counseling to help him deal with his sexual needs and desires that have run amok and I dare say that you also could have benefitted greatly from some counseling as well to help you work your way through your feeling of having been sexually violated.
Had you cared enough for yourself to get some help, you would not be turning your understandable hurt and anger outward toward the rest of us and trying to make us feel guilty for what happened to you. We are not the ones who committed this crime against you and you need to understand that.
If you care enough about yourself, I would strongly suggest that you do avail yourself of some help in dealing with the conflicted feelings which you are obviously suffering from. There is absolutely no reason, whatsoever, why you should be carrying this burden on your shoulders alone.

While “Everyone has a body, even children” is definitely not the most articulate defense of public nudity, the implication that non-sexualized nudity in a setting like this parade is somehow equivalent to sexual abuse does nothing more than distract from the truly heinous crimes perpetrated by sex traffickers, child pornographers, and other pedophiles.

What kind of an example are these people setting for our children? Very few of those bicyclists were wearing helmets. If any one of them was in an accident this could result in serious, life long injuries even death. No matter how long your trip or the speed at which one is traveling, a helmet is a MUST when on a bicycle. We need to consistently model this behavior for children.
