It’s disheartening to see a society move backwards, but the Indian Supreme Court has done just that after it reinstated a colonial-era law making gay sex a crime. And it’s easy for us to say “disheartening,” but for gay Indians, the emotion is more likely to be outrage, anger and hurt.
That’s why it’s so inspiring to see these photos of out, proud Indians in Mumbai turning that frustration into action, gathering more than 5,000 strong for the nations seventh and largest pride parade on Feb. 1.
Ashok Row Kavi, one of India’s most prominent gay right leaders, told DNA Newspaper, “If courts think they can brush us off and treat us like sub-humans they need to see how they have ended up giving the movement a shot in the arm instead. This movement will grow and succeed.”
We tend to agree with you, Ashok.

I seem to remember that before it was legalized they wore masks for this sort of thing. Not returning to that (at least so far as these pictures show) seems important; hopefully it won’t mean trouble.

this is just beautiful. i love the sign that says “being gay is not a western invention, it’s a human reality”. Ashok Row Kavi is a gay icon and out gay people all over the world (especially in places where it’s illegal) are everyday heroes.

Between all these countless rape stories it’s really beautiful to see that story. I still fear the law is there to stay for some time now. But will be not enforced just like in Singapore. By that law even oral sex is illegal.
