PHOTOS: Matthew Mitcham’s New Endorsement Package

When Matthew Mitcham, the Australian diver, won gold at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, there was much debate about whether he’d follow other aquatic athletes into the fame and fortunes so easily reaped by folks like Michael Phelps. There was the whole “Is he too gay?” whispering going on, but in the end, Mitcham secured an endorsement deal with telecom company Telstra. A few months later, another deal, more apropos to Mitcham’s very recognizable competition uniform, arrived in the form of aussieBum, though it appears that deal fell through. Now, a stand-in: Mitcham is the new face of Aussie swimwear line Funky Trunks. The fashions you see on him should be available for purchase this month.

He would have gotten endorsements sooner but for his desire to “branch out” and shy away from the diving-oriented opportunities. Glad to see he’s come to his senses and working hard to secure solid endorsements than get nothing.

Matthew is a hero and I applaud Funky Trunks for picking him up. Now if only I could order a pair with him in it!

Weird, he was kind of known as the diver that didn’t shave his chest etc… and then they completely wax him up for the ads. VERY glad he’s getting endorsements, but just surprised that they changed his image like that!

Matthew is a beautiful young man, inside and out (as these pictures attest). He is intelligent, grounded, open, and proud of himself. All are laudable characteristics. I wish him well.
