PHOTOS: Sexy gay otters celebrate World Otter Day

Did you know that Wednesday was World Otter Day?

World Otter Day was started by International Otter Survival Fund back in 2009. It’s purpose is to draw attention to the 13 different species of otter, all of which are listed in the IUCN Red List of threatened species as a result of habitat loss, hunting, and people keeping them as pets.

Of course, there’s a 14th species of otter not formally recognized by the IOSF. It is the kind of otter defined by Urban Dictionary as:

A gay man who is very hairy all over his body, but is smaller in frame and weighs considerably less than a bear.

Happy #WorldOtterDay ? Above are a few individuals from one group I've had the privilege to study this year. Aonyx cinereus (Asian Short-Clawed Otter) are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List mostly due to excess man exploitation, pollution and habitat loss. This is similar to other species like Eurasian and Smooth-coated Otters also, because of an extreme decrease in prey biomass due to this over exploitation, it is leaving their chosen habitats unsustainable & therefore affecting their population. There is a significant lack of research into their habitat use and ecology, together with little behavioural studies, Otters are in need of a helping hand! Studying this species has been extremely rewarding & I've definitely fallen in love with them a little bit… (ok, a lot!!) Big or small, new research is key for helping to protect the Lutrinae fam ??
