We wondered…”Do we look gay?”

View this post on Instagram

“One of the most common responses I get when people find out I’m gay is that I don’t “look” gay. I am told this from the LGBTQAI+ community just as often—if not more—from straight, cis people. Who are you to define who I am based on how you think I look? That’s like someone saying, “well you don’t look like a Steph, so I’m going to call you Amy.” Being gay is not a “look,” it is a sexual orientation. Yes, there are stereotypes and stigmas associated with the appearances of LGBTQAI+ people, but they are nothing more than that. My appearance does not make my sexual identity any less valid, nor do I have to “prove” my orientation to anyone who questions it. The only person who has the right to define who you are is yourself, and no one can take that away from you ??????? ????” – @ellosteph
