PHOTOS: Over the weekend U.S. Marine Corps captain Matthew Phelps proposed to his partner, Ben Schock, at the White House. On his blog Phelps, who’s a board member at the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, thanked the Obamas for “lending” their home for the occasion. “The only thing on my mind was making it a memorable and unforgettable night for Ben,” he added.

Congrats! Many years of continued happiness.

They look happy. Good for them. Congrats.
On a side note… I feel the down on one knee proposal doesn’t really translate to two guys getting engaged. If I ever propose, I’m not doing that.

Adorable couple. I wish for you a long, happy, healthy marriage. Thanks for serving in our military too. You two are so right on.

Congratulations, gentlemen! Best of luck.

I was thinking that it’d be kind of cool to get engaged or married in some sort of “taboo” location. By saying “taboo” I am meaning a location that normally hasn’t been LGBT supportive…. such as the White House.
It’d also be very cool to have a Supreme Court Justice MARRY an LGBT couple. I assume that these 9 judges have that power. I’ll pick retired Sandra Day O’Connor. I’ve always appreciated her independence (like Kennedy), even if I don’t agree with her on everything. I think that her marrying a gay couple would be an astonishing thing considering that she was the first woman on the Supreme Court… which was groundbreaking.
I suppose if someone who fast enough (in saying their vows) someone could actually get married IN the White House during a tour. It surely wouldn’t take much. Just have the pastor with you as you’re touring and say the “I do” parts before you leave.

John Doe, Sandra Day O’Connor is a jerk, and also a conservative. Nice thought, but it won’t happen.

Congratulation guys.

Talk about May December marriages…egads!!!
DanteL
@pconneely: Are you serious? May-December marriage? I would hardly call a 9 year age difference May December. Matt is 35 and Ben is 26. Way to make that your 1st post.
@erikwm: I think the great thing about us being allowed to marry (in some areas) is that we get to make our own traditions so you can do what you want; however, I don’t know that I agree with your assumption that going down on one knee wouldn’t translate to two gay men. If anything, I think it fits perfectly because the tradition dates back to knighthood and chivalry. It was customary for a knight to bow in a show of servitude to his mistress and his master. By going down on one knee for a proposal, it’s a sign of deep affection and one of service (which is what marriage ultimately is).
