Now that the gay marriage ban has been struck down in Pennsylvania, the mayor of Pittsburgh is showing his support for marriage equality by officiating a mass same-sex wedding during that city’s 2014 pride festivities.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Pittsburgh mayor Bill Peduto shared his excitement about marriage equality in his state. In his words, he’s not only “thrilled” about the prospect of being able to perform same-sex weddings, but seems fairly eager to do as many of them as possible at once.
Peduto plans to marry multiple gay couples as a part of Pittsburgh’s PrideFest because “being able to share that moment with many others should make for an even more joyous celebration.”
Well done, Mayor Peduto.

While it may not reach the levels of Queen Latifah’s gay marriage Grammy moment, Peduto plans to marry up to 20 couples in downtown Pittsburgh on June 15th.
It will definitely be a joyous occasion for those getting married and a source of unyielding pressure for those of us that are still very, very single.

I meant to add:
…but, I’m not so jazzed about the whole Mass Wedding concept, which seems kinda Moonie-ish on the surface. I know that the couple is “technically married” in a legal sense once the marriage license is signed and filed, and that the wedding itself is really just a ceremonial formality.
But a mass public same-sex wedding doesn’t necessarily send the best PR message to other states that are still debating same-sex marriage.
It kinda suggests (to the casual observer) that a lot of same-sex couples have very superficial ideas about marriage and are primarily interested in having their pictures taken in rented formalwear, and eating a piece of fancy cake, and dancing a bit. There’s a lot more to marriage than that.
Now, if the mayor of Pittsburgh wants to officiate at a mass “Twentyplus-th” anniversary party for same-sex couples who’ve been together at least two decades (regardless of their on-paper marital status), THAT could be something truly worthwhile, because homophobic naysayers from the Bible Belt couldn’t possibly claim that “oh, those couples just stuck it out for 20 years so that they could get some free cake today.”
