Why does Hillary Clinton only talk about gay people with gay people, while Barack Obama mentions them to mainstream audiences? [AmericaBlog]

Has she ever used the term LGBT ? McCain said he didn’t know what it meant. Does Hilary ?
Gay is not in her vocabulary, but it is better to not say anything, than to say the alternative, homosexual, a German medical term to describe a mental disorder.
Chris
The blog would be better without all that news about how Hillary is bad and Obama great.
CitizenGeek
Chris … it’s a stone cold fact that Barack Obama has addressed gay issues in front of a general crowd, while Hillary Clinton only ever talks about the issue if she’s asked, or if she’s in front of a gay audience.
Mauricio
Yes, he says the word. I am voting for him just because.
CondeNasty
I agree, after supporting her for years I have seen during this extended primary campaign the cracks in her facade. In front of the NRA she acts like Annie Oakley, in front of a religious crowd she speaks about the power of the Holy Spirit in her life experiences…… I am finally over the clinton’s and their baggage. They are political opportunists and this extended ugly primary season will only insure a fractured Democratic Party and a McCain win.
briand24
Thank-you for finally bringing this up. And I couldn’t agree more with these responses. Hillary is old politics as usual, telling different groups separately what they want to hear. Sure Hillary has shown up at pride parades and sent Chelsea on the campaign’s ’08 gay bar USA tour, but when it comes to bringing people together in the forefront to bridge gaps and overcome injustice, she doesn’t deliver. And guess who has the power to overturn discriminatory laws or put positive ones on the ballots? The voting public.
Barack Obama has not only reached out to diverse groups directly by mobilizing them through grass-roots efforts, but has a consistent message inclusive of everybody when he addresses everybody. Hillary just tells you what you want to hear in your own environment when the others aren’t looking. And as someone in the advertising industry, I see right through bullshit.
Who’s really about speeches and who’s really about solutions? I urge the gay community to think twice.
Typical White Gay Person
If you are basing your vote on LGBTQ issues only, then you should look at the work the Bill and Hillary Clinton have done for the gay community in the past. For Obama as Janet (Ms. Jackson if your nasty) says what has he done for us lately.
Can any of you name one LGBTQ issue that Obama has worked on since he has been in public office?
The gay community should think twice about throwing Hillary under the bus.
Even in the face of the mainstream media and the blogosphere bashing the Clintons and sucking from the nipples of Obama, this lady is still standing.
CondeNasty
You are right I cannot think of a concrete example of what Obama has done for us lately. But when I think of the Clinton’s the signing of DOMA and the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy immediately spring to mind. It is not that I hate the Clintons, it is just at this point I want a clean slate and a new perspective free from the baggage of the past.
Typical White Gay Person
Condenasty..
Perhaps DOMA and Don’t Ask was the best they could do at that time with the Congress and Senate they had. While it was far from perfect, it was a step in the right direction.
Where was Obama while DOMA and Don’t Ask was going on? Was he active in the LGBTQ community trying to get a better bill passed or was he hanging with McClurkin?
Bitch Republic
Obama is an asshat and so are his supporters.

-“finally bringing this up”???? Where the hell have you been for the last year, Briand24? In a COMA? This PHONY issue has been hurled at Sen. Clinton by the Obama Marys for months.
And was your coma in A CAVE? Where do you think those Pride Parades she’s marched in—even as FIRST LADY—were held? Underground? With armed leather queens at the entrances to keep any straight people from seeing her? Sorry to disappoint you, but they’re held on public streets where anyone can see her, including the media. Where she knows pictures and news video of her support for gays like the images below can be used against her by the Right Wing. Contrast her willingness to do that with Obama refusing to be photographed with the one STRAIGHT guy most associated with gay marriage equality—San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, even at fundraisers FOR OBAMA that Newsom was hosting. More people, gay, progay, antigay, saw her in just one of those marches than all of the people in all of the times the Dali Obama has dropped the G-word combined.
St. Obama has brought NO ONE together! Ask the gays in South Carolina who demonstrated outside of the Obama Donnie “gays are trying to kill our children†McClurkin concert how “brought together†they felt?
Ask the gays in Illinois who realized he must have been too busy in 2004 campaigning for US Senate to take a couple of minutes to sign on as a cosponsor to their LGBT rights bill how “brought together†they felt? And again have they’ve heard him in the last few months repeatedly lie claiming he WAS a “chief cosponsor†and “passed†it when he wasn’t even still in the state senate when it was voted on.
Dropping the gay word in speeches—WITHOUT the word “rights” or “equality” attached— is better than nothing but as close to nothing as you can get. He has ONLY joined the words WHEN ASKED. Yet he won’t allow himself to be asked specific questions about what he would DO about those issues by gay media that he does not already know will give him an easy ride—like “The Advocate†who shamelessly printed his shameless lies about the Illinois gay rights bill.
Sen. Clinton condemned Gen. Pace’s homophobic remarks BEFORE Obama did. She released a statement condemning the murder of Lawrence King BEFORE Obama did.
Her official site had her positions on gay rights issues MONTHS before Obama’s did.
He talks AT us not to us. And reports yesterday in the “Washington Blade†about the different responses to requests that the campaigns urge the British Prime Minister to halt the deportation of gay Iranian refugees living in Britain such as 19-yr. old Mehdi Kazemi is the most revealing yet of how little Obama gets it, how little he ACTUALLY cares to do anything beyond pandering with pretty words!
His campaign simply released a statement HERE that an Obama administration would take a stand against such things. But, quote, “Ben LaBolt, an Obama campaign spokesperson, would not say whether Obama planned to write to Brown on the issue, as Equality Forum requested.â€
By the time “an Obama administration†could begin Kazemi’s dangling corpse could already be drawing flies. But, hey, maybe he’d like an Obama 08 t-shirt or to watch will.i.am O-ba-ma! O-ba-ma! videos while awaiting the gallows.
By DEEP contrast both in Sen. Clinton’s commitment to DOING something for LGBTs not just talking at it AND her existing relationships with international leaders:
“Lee Feinstein, the Clinton campaign’s national security director, said Tuesday that it was tracking the [Kazemi] case ……..’THE CAMPAIGN HAS DISCUSSED THIS ISSUE WITH THE U.K. GOVERNMENT’, he said. ‘We were encouraged to learn that the deportation order for Mr. Kazemi has been deferred and is now under review’. Feinstein said the campaign would ‘continue to follow this issue closely’.â€
The only thing less informed, less defensible than blind Hillary Hate is blind Obama Love.

She is a REPUBLICAN, people. She’s still a GOLDWATER Girl. Just because she’s running as a democrat, doesn’t mean she really is one. She will triangulate this issue to her advantage, and encourage all the queers who love her so much to wait just a little bit longer for their rights…

What a non-issue.
While I’m leaning for Obama these days, if I were ONLY voting based on LBTGQ issues then Hillary would win hands down. She’s not a homophobe by any stretch, and has consistently shown a comfort with our community. Obama -says- the right thing, but I can’t imagine Obama laughing and taking part in a Pride Parade.

Take a breath and put down the kool-aid….you’re sounding like a Manic Mary.
Tom
Leland Francis has gone way beyond overdosing on kool aid. This person has established his bona fides as a full-on Nazi…and that word is not used lightly.
As an online Nazi, Leland has taken demagoguery to a new level and there is no way in hell he is a Democrat. He is offensive, insulting, irrational, and uses words to blugeon people into his way of thinking. For those that disagree or for those that are different, he seeks to destroy. through this medium, he can only use words. In person, I am certain he would use violence (or more than likely try to convince others to use violence for him, for I am convinced that he is really a coward like his idol Hitler was).
Leland Frances
Todd, Todd, Todd. Harvey Milk was a Goldwater Girl, too. And he was much older at the time than Hillary Clinton who was 17. Does that erase how he changed? What he accomplished after that? Do YOU want to be labeled for the rest of YOUR life for what YOU did and thought at 17?
Grow up!
Leland Frances
Tom, Tom, Tom. Since you can’t dispute my document FACTS you resort to attacking me. Really, I thought your Messiah for the Gays Obama was all about “new politics”—but you’re just same old same old: shooting the messenger.
Sad.

This kind of “he said/she said”, my candidate can beat up your candidate, nanny-nanny poopoo dialogue will elect us a tired old republican for prezzeedent. Let’s give it a rest. It’s almost statistically impossible for Hillary to pull this nomination out of her hat, and while we wait for her to drop out, we’re tearing each other apart…..
tb
Obama does tend to bring up LGBT rights in front of mixed crowds, making him more of an evangelist for gay rights. He also has much more potential to bridge the sometimes rocky relationship b/t the African American civil rights movement and the gay rights movement.
Also, Bill Clinton threw the gays under the bus to get reelected in 1996 when he signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law. The other signature Clinton era gay rights policy was “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which has been horrible also.
Michael Duquette
Im really trying hard to stay out of this asinine debates since Obama supporters have little grasp on reality, but some of these things against Hillary are so beyond absurd it almost comical.
So what if she used to be Republican. So was I, and you know what?, John McCain’s solution to the housing crisis is in fact, the best answer. We shouldn’t be digging an even bigger hole trying to rescue some idiots who bought a house that way. Yes, the lending companies were wrong, but cap the % rate and be done with it. It’s not the governments purpose to rescue everyone when they make a poor decision.
Furthermore, what has Obama done for gay rights since he has been in office? Not a damn thing. It’s Hillary who has been on the forefront of the LGBT. So what if Hillary addresses the gay press and speaks of Gay Rights almost exclusively to us, she’s making she we know of her suppport. She is the first First Lady to march in a Pride Parade and the first Senator mind you.
Obama speaks at us but not with us. What took him so long to speak to the gay press? One almost has to believe do to the company that he keeps that Obama’s “love of the gays” is a political strategy.
People who keep bringing up DOMA are un-informed and are rather ignorant. He had no choice but to sign it, it was very important, so was “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” you have to remember that those were huge steps for the LGBT community and now we’re acting as if it’s not enough, and you know what, now it’s not. Which is why Hillary is going to remedy those problems immediately.
I promise you that if Obama is the nominee, McCain will be the next president. If you think Hillary has been tough on him, the Republicans will rip him apart. Obama has yet to demonstrate that he can win swing states and the larger states. He is only winning with really 2 demographics, the African American vote (with a whopping 92% surprise surprise) and the youth vote, myself not included. Let’s face it, the young are voting opposite of our die-hard republican and die hard democratic parents. i.e. McCain or Hillary.
We have to remember its about winning in November and Hillary is the only one who can deliver that for us.

yeh right, that’s why she is behind in delegates, states, money and votes.
60% of voters say she is a liar, yet you really think she has a better chance against mccain?

TB: I accept that you sincerely believe the MYTH that Obama brings up gay RIGHTS in front of crowds of any kind, but the FACT is he DOES NOT.
He RESPONDS to questions about gay RIGHTS but so does Sen. Clinton. How could anyone not respond?
But the MYTH has grown and grown and grown [and been willfully misrepresented by Obama himself and his staff] that he does more than that WITHOUT prompting.
Challenge a gay Obama supporter to identify what he said in his famous 2004 DNC Convention speech and they’ll insist he said something like, “gay rights are important.” But the ONLY thing he actually said was, “and, yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the red states.” Anybody remember when we used to mock people for trying to earn credibility by saying, “Some of my best friends are gay.” What’s the diff? Bill Clinton talked about gay RIGHTS in his campaign. Jesse Jackson talked about gay RIGHTS in his campaign more than 20 years ago!
Then they’ll claim Obama’s talked about gay RIGHTS lots of other places. NONE I’ve ever found that wasn’t in response, just like Sen. Clinton to an interviewer, debate moderator, or person in the audience. He’s talked about “not blaming” or “scapegoating” gays and other minorities for various problems but NOT gay RIGHTS!
There are those who would swear on their mother’s grave that Obama talked about gay RIGHTS or “fighting homophobia” during his speech at Martin Luther King, Jr’s., former church. WRONG again. He ONLY said, “We have scorned our gay brothers and sisters instead of embracing them.” That’s true, of course, and nice of him to say but we need far more from those listeners and all other nongays in the US than hugs. We need them to stop voting against our rights and start voting for them. But you wouldn’t know that from what Obama said that day.
Yes, he’s talked about “homophobia”—but it’s always been in the context of being an obstacle to fighting AIDS. It is, of course, but far more important homophobia was EVIL, as bad as racism, before anyone had ever heard of AIDS; will still be long after AIDS is cured. But you never here THAT from Obama’s lips.
He honks the gay word horn in a few speeches; zooming on to the next line in his speech, and people react as if he’s not just personally cured AIDS but raised all of its victims from the grave.
How easily some are swayed.
Michael Duquette
#23…
Don’t get it twisted, the polls said the same thing about Obama.
Hillary is behind in delegates because Obama won 12 primaries in a row, the majority being caucuses. He can’t win swing states or large states. His caucus states will vote republican in november. Plus, you must remember Florida and Michigan aren’t being counted at the current time.
Hillary is barely behing in the popular vote, must I remind you how overwhelmingly the african americans have been turning out to vote for Obama?
Don’t be stupid, wake up, do some research and realize it’s Hillary or 4 years of George W. Lite.

you can spin till your brainless head falls off, it still does not change the facts that hilary is behind in EVERYTHING measurable. her negative ratings is 60% now.
she has NO HOPE in hell in winning both the primary and NOV. election.

“Hillary is barely behing in the popular vote, must I remind you how overwhelmingly the african americans have been turning out to vote for Obama?”
that being the more reason you should vote for him as those votes will never waver. hilary’s blue collar votes could swing to mccain in the major election.
anyways, the MoST important voters are the independents who CAN’t stand her, the ONLY reason she is still in this race is because the WHITE FEMALE VOTERS below her pant suit belt.

Leland, check and update your links. Many are broken, and others don’t support your argument. I almost passed them on to a friend; lucky I checked first.

TB: I accept that you sincerely believe the MYTH that Obama brings up gay RIGHTS in front of crowds of any kind, but the FACT is he DOES NOT.
Nope, I’m pretty sure he does, since I heard it in person from his stump speech and not from a question.

Hillary Clinton had her daughter stroll the streets of Pen.’s gay district and talk with club-goers and take photos for nearly an hour.
Hillary Clinton has walked and held hands in gay parades in NYC.
The day I see Barack Obama walk down a street in a gay parade is the day I’d vote for him.
I would be prepared that gays are voting for Clinton in prospects as high as 7 and maybe as high as 9 to 1.
Jack Jett
John Avarois at Americablog, that created this story is a man with a major vendetta against the
Clintons. He applied for a job with them, had a meeting with Bill Clinton, offered to help them with the negative blogosphere press, and the Clinton’s turned him down.
So Mr. Avarois gets his knickers in a twist and decides to spend every ounce of energy he has to destroy the Clintons.
The problem is that he is more of a non entity that he realizes. In addition, he has taken to banning all supporters of Hillary Clinton. If you look at his blog, you will see it is 98 percent Clinton bashing.
Hillary has no problem with the gays. Avarois has problems with reality.
Sean
Bill Clinton HAD to sign DOMA? No, he proposed it as part of his “triangularisation”. He ran commercials in the south bragging about it. DOMA is extremely damning to our movement and Hillary won’t even support FULL repeal!
In 2003, as state senator and before he ran for US Senate, Obama sponsored legislation banning discrimination against LGBT. He showed courage considering it may have been used against him among his six opponents in the democratic primary for US Senate. Believe me, Illinois may be a blue state now, but the democratic party here is hardly a liberal one.
Again, Hillary panders; has a message for every segment. It’s divide and conquer and you will never see her make a controversial comment to a mass audience.
Why are you all falling for it?
