Before RuPaul was the mama of all drag mothers, she was just another Atlanta queen with a dream. In the early ’80s, Ru fronted a new wave band called Wee Wee Pole, and because the internet is amazing, there’s video proof.
In this clip, Ru is about to make his Atlanta debut at The Nitery, and is understandably nervous. But in the pre-show interview, it’s also comforting to see that young Ru has all the grace and poise that the world would soon come to admire.
And here’s the band making another appearance at The Nitery. Guess the first performance went over well.
