PUCKER FOR LOVE

The 13 Most Heartbreaking, Romantic Gay Movie Kisses Ever

“Once you get that first kiss in, you are comfortable,” Michael Douglas told New York Magazine on tongue-wrestling with Matt Damon.

There’s always a sort of morbid fascination whenever openly straight actors — particularly openly straight male actors — play gay characters, as if kissing a man is the ultimate test of a thespian’s mettle.

It’s just a kiss, after all.

But sometimes, a kiss is more than a kiss. It moves mountains, ignites fires, heals wounds and/or leads to some tastefully-filmed love scenes. Ahead of the premiere of Douglas and Damon’s Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra on HBO this Sunday, we look back on queer cinemas best dude-on-dude smooching.

A lot has been made about how “GAY!!!” Steven Soderbergh’s film is, but he and his leading men have some big lips to fill.

Not a movie. But the kiss between “the two Capt. Jacks” from Torchwood is just amazing…and it lingers…so sweet and HOT.

Gay actors, both in the closet and out, have to kiss the opposite sex all the time. I don’t recall the getting any special press or awards because of it.

In my memory, the end of “Beautiful Thing” had a gay kiss…although when I pulled up the clip it was just pure beautiful romance…

The kiss between Yossi & Jagger has tongue, and the actor is not even gay, so for me is the best!

What about the elevator kiss in ‘No Night is too Long’?

#2 Roberta Flack singing “Making Love”. I miss hearing real music like that playing on the radio.

@DrDrew: Thank-you for posting! I think this is my favorite gay movie of all time. There are plenty of good kiss scenes in the movie. Every time I watch it I am back in high school again with my first love.

Daniel Day-Lewis. I’d do him then and now. Something about a man that ages really well :)

@loafersguy: That one is my personal favorite from one of my all time favorite films.

@DrDrew: The night scene in the park, on their way home from the gay club. Leaning against the tree. Gets me every time.

It’s a sign of the times. After Making Love, Harry Hamlin and Michael Ontkean were never to be seen on the big screen again, the careers stillborn. Now, any straight actor who “plays gay” gets an Oscar nomination, and the admiration of his peers and fans. Welcome progress indeed.

Really? COULDN’T FIND TWO WOMEN IN ALLL THE WORLD,AAY? Tsk tsk tsk,
AINT ALL BOUT YOU,YA KNOW!! Lol

How can you leave out Michael Caine’s and Christopher Reeves’ surprise and very sensual kiss in “Mousetrap”. In the theaters the mass gasps were universal along with the occasional call out . . . “Superman! Say it isn’t so!”.

@decampbell: Good choice! “Jeffrey” got so-so reviews, even in the Gay press. It deserves better.
Daniel Day-Lewis’s brief feast on Gordon Warnecke’s neck in “My Beautiful Laundrette” is one of the best teases ever. Still gives me chills, even almost 3 decades later.
The best: the raw passion between Gyllenhaal and Ledger. Pick your favorite scene.
