A recent contestant on ‘The Voice’ has come out about his work in gay adult film

Tyshawn Colquitt

In a recent interview, Tyshawn Colquitt — a 23-year-old singer who appeared on the most recent season of NBC’s reality singing competition The Voice — said that he’d previously performed in gay porn to help make ends meet.

“I did it when I was going through a rough time,” he told RadarOnline.com. Colquitt says he grew up as the oldest in a family of 12 children. Without a male role model, he felt an obligation to be successful.

“I got a presidential scholarship, but I didn’t have any money to pay for any type of living expenses, so I couldn’t go to college. I was trying to do so many different things and it was just not enough.”

He reportedly appeared in several group sex scenes, but has since called his participation “a huge mistake” and “not a part of my lifestyle that I am comfortable with.” He adds that he never expected news of the videos “to go as big as it did.”

He eventually graduated from the School of Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati and says he won competitions at Live at the Apollo six times throughout his life. He has also performed internationally and worked with famous funk musician Bootsy Collins.

During his stint in The Voice, Colquitt joined the team of singer Jennifer Hudson, having always wanted to work with her since he seeing her powerhouse performance in Dreamgirls.

He now works as a music producer and vocal coach while also helping out at his mother’s bakery, Pounds for Sounds.

Naturally, there’s nothing wrong with performing in adult film. It’d be cool to see Colquitt continue to succeed, having been honest about his past work.
