Funny, ’cause so does he! The above ad, from his 2006 Democratic run for a U.S. Senate from Tennessee, is a stark difference from what he was going on about on the Today show, about how he’s always been for eliminating marriage discrimination.
And this is going to be great stuff if his New York U.S. Senate challenger Kirsten Gillibrand decides to use some of her $7+ million warchest (expected to grow to $20+ million in time for the election) to, uh, remind voters that Ford is a liar. Or a flip-flopper?

This guy wouldn’t be dull on a witness stand, would he?

This New York Outsider must be stopped! He is being propped up by a bitter Ex-Gov Spitzer, Back-stabbing Senior Senator Charles Schumer and the anti-gay marriage Democrats who tell us we have their support yet work feverishly against same-gender rights. Gillibrand can win this upstate and she is fully supportive of Marriage Equality. I know that the Tennessee Senatorial campaign against Harold Ford where he was cast as a predator of white women went too far, but he is seizing a race-baiting election in New York City – a typical Democrat trick. Not only is he a carpet-bagger but we are rolled up inside and he will dump us in the East River with the anti-gay Albany Democrats.
Same Crap
Er, a Hillz supporter chiding someone else for being a carpetbagger? Ok.
I think Ford is very ambitious but not terribly bright. He’s trying to mount a primary challenge from the RIGHT to a sitting Democratic senator in a very liberal state??? I know he’s taking Bloomberg’s money/people/support, but I don’t think he really thought this through completely.
Cam
He’s now claiming to be for it apparently. Typical, Most politicians only care about getting elected and they will say anything, whatever it will take. Romney used to be for abortion when he ran in MA. laster was against it when he tried to win the presidential nomination. McCain used to be for drilling in the Arctic until the polls said it wasn’t a winning position so then he turned on a dime and was against it. Palin fought for the bridge to nowhere, but then would say she was against it in later interviews when she was trying for a job outside Alaska. typical B.S. from all these losers.
Lukas P.
Until Ford can explain his change of heart AND demonstrate some knowlege of the issues surrounding gay marriage, I don’t buy his sudden twinge of gay-friendliness as anything other than testing the waters. I hope the “gay press” grills him on his conversion and his understanding of LGBT issues. Plus, he needs to find some credible GLBT allies and aides willing to vouch for him.
Carpetbagging isn’t my greatest concern about him at this point. Conviction–based on deep understanding of the topic–is.
tjr101
I was disappointed when the other flip flopper Rudy Giuliani decided not to run for anything as I was looking forward to voting against him but now another present for November. Carpetbagging is not an issue for NY as Hillary Clinton lived in the state for only two years before running for the senate. She turned out to be quite a solid vote in the senate.
If Ford does decide to run for the senate I will vote against him with glee but more importantly my vote will be for equality supporter Kirsten Gillibrand. Ford is nothing but a flip flopper and is way too conservative for a state like NY. At first I was wary of Gillibrand for her NRA membership but now those doubts are gone.
Adam
I mean, hold on – are we seriously nailing this guy for coming out in support of gay marriage? What is this – some exclusive club that denies entrance to anyone who didn’t accept at the first invitation. We should be thrilled that he’s finally decided to publicly support gay marriage, or change his language on the issue, or whatever the heck he wants to call it. Let him defend the carpetbagging concerns on the merits of that issue, but I certainly don’t believe that when a politician, any politician, changes publicly an anti-gay position, we should be attacking them.
dfrw
He’s not in favor of gay marriage.
Isaiah
@ Adam
We are “seriously nailing” this guy because he’s only coming out for equality now because he is running for Senate in New York. And the person he will challenge, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, is one of our genuine supporters.
wondermann
People act Gillibrand has done so much, lol. Anyway, quickly bashing him will could work against us. He hasn’t laid out any agenda and we are trying to destroy him.
We need to remember that our issues are not everyone’s issues. The average voter will weigh everything a candidate has to offer. Harold has a strong record and can run circles around Sen. Gillibrand.
He could win this thing.
Chitown Kev
@wondermann
You are such a suck up…
If I were a gay voter in NY, you can damn well bet that I would not vote for anyone who voted for the federal marriage amendment twice (neither Obama nor Hillary did THAT),
We, we, we, you’re defending him off of the bat because he’s black just as you do with Obama all of the time…
wondermann
No, I’m not defending him. I’m a realist. Strategy is key and we suck at it. This has nothing to do with his race, this issue has a lot to do with our gun jumping.
Tom in Lazybrook
Look its time to let the Blue Dogs know that you vote against us, and we’ll remember it. If Ford was still in Tennessee, he’d still be Mr. Anti-Gay
MickW
He should run, if you don’t like him don’t vote for him!
dontblamemeivotedforhillary
I misspoke when I said that Senator Charles, The Schemer stabbed Kirsten Gillibrand in the back when in fact it was then Senator Hillary Clinton. Do New Yorkers want more graft from the First family of Tennessee who’s family reads like a Rap Sheet with Harold Ford? When he loses, he will move out of his Manhattan loft and run in Michigan. Hillary has long laid the carpets in New York and was a competent two-term Senator and the more gay-friendly of the 2008 Presidential candidates. And we know how well Obama worked out for us Gays! Harold Ford Junior will be our worst nightmare!
yawn
Vote Kristen. Ford is a gay-hating phony.
dontblamemeivotedforhillary
Ford is Against Gay Marriage before he was For Gay Marriage….. My Civil rights can’t af-Ford that gamble on the spoiled prince of Tennessee!
Chitown Kev
@wondermann
If he wins the primary…remember, Ford is also pretty anti-choice when it comes to abortion…
No way can he win a Democratic primary in New York state by isolation women and the gays.
greenluv1322
Oh hell no! Why aren’t you guys talking about his commercial from 2006. You didn’t say this dude was pushing the god card. Not convinced that suddenly he doesn’t have any of the “faith” that he had before. Point is he is a liar and he used two big, big liars Tricky Dick Bill Clinton, and Charles Schumer to prove his point.
Disgusted American
“Im Harold Ford and I Love God, Hate the Gays….and Love God…….Did I say I Hate the Gays? ..Oh yea, and I love me some God, now Vote for me Harold Ford…I Love God,and Hate the Gays”. …what an asshole !
Robert, in NYC
Ford would be bad for New York. He’s a blue dog-democrat right down to his bones. Look what happened in the recent marriage equality defeat in NJ, some of them said they’d vote for equality, then did the opposite. Ford would be no different. Once a conservative, always a conservative. He should stay put in his redneck state. Michael Bloomberg better watch it, he’s promoting this redneck in the state. At least Gillibrand is a New Yorker, knows more about the state than Ford could even conceive and has reached out to virtually every union, an important tactic if you wan’t to be a viable candidate in NYS. I’d like to hear someone question him about his sudden epiphany on same-sex marriage, really ask probing questions so that his fellow conservatives can get an earful. This is nothing more than political expediency to get elected, and if he ever were, heaven help us. He’d go right back to his conservative base.
christopher di spirito
I’m sure within the next 6 months, someone will come forward to say he used to blow Harold Ford on a regular basis back home in Nashville.
This cat just reeks of being on the “DL.”

Because if he is just saying it to get elected he will be dangerous for us. If his real feelings are that he doesn’t support gay marriage, by electing him we will have sent somebody in there who will not only not push any bills to support us, but who can come out against the bills for “Not being done at the right time” and he will give the bigots cover because people will say “Oh, Sen. Ford is even against this bill and he supports gay marriage so it must be a bad bill!”. At least Gill brand is talking about and trying to introduce legislation.
Ousslander
I’m jus r shocked that everyone is not falling to their knees and accepting his change. Why, the dems would never nominate someone who believes i. Discrimination or seperate but equal. Only repubs do that
Robert, NYC
Cam, Ousslander……we’ve already seen what some conservative blue dog democrats did in NYS and NJ, some said they’d vote for SSM and when it came to final vote, they did the opposite. Leopards never change their spots. I don’t trust Ford one bit. Another thing….in the brief history of politicians backing away at the last minute, not one has lost his or her seat voting for equality, that’s the irony, not even in an election year. So its a red herring for them to use that tactic with the bogus claim that they have to respect their conservative constituents’ wishes. Its a load of bunk.

Schumer is a big Gillibrand suppoert. Get your facts straight.
dontblamemeivotedforhillary
Hardman, I corrected myself as I was reading the book Game Change wehere we see Democrats for the Evil fucking hypocrites that they are, especially the New York Judas himself, Schumer. Gotta read corrections when you scroll on Red Bull and Viagra. Still, would you trust Chuck, the Schemer as your BFF? – Hillary sure did and it helped her opponent to the White House and the world on the verge of collapse with Bush-lite policies.
Dems Not So Wild About Harry:
Even Tennessee Democrats don’t trust this oily salesman – the White Southern Republicans love him – because he is a Democrat in Name Only (DINO) or Dixiecrat at the same Country Clubs they used to exclude him from when their Pappy ran things!
Brian NJ
Ford is a sell-us-down-the-river Democrat – a phony. That is why he was able to suggest in his ad that he opposed gay marriage based on his belief in God.
Gillibrand has pushed hard for a repeal of DADT and DOMA, as is consistent on the issue. She has worked on it out of her duty under the law, and Ford has just considered it not in the context of his elected duty, but in terms of votes.
dontblamemeivotedforhillary
Harold Ford Jr is a shill for the Corporate-controlled Democrats and Republicans who will challenge Barack Obama’s financial reforms of crooked Wall Street…as a sitting U.S Senator from New York. The only person who can challenge an embattled President from within is another light-skinned, well-spoken democrat from a family dynasty. Ford has been gnashing his teeth ever since Obama rose quickly through the ranks of the Democrat Party. While Julius Ceasar-Obama sits on his throne, the challenge will come from within his own party and Harold Ford Junior AKA Brutus knows his role. He always has! Not only is he a phony, he is a very dangerous politician bent on revenge from within his own party as the secret oligarchy strive to keep the status quo. This means keeping gays in a cage while he uses his southern charm to wrench money and energy away from more hard-fought campaigns and issues as Marriage Equality which is a rolling snow-ball of gathering magnitude that threatens Democrats more than our visible opponents! We are not his target, but we are collateral.
AndrewW
When Ford was in Tennessee (78% “religious”) he was against same-sex marriage.
Now Ford is in New York (48% “religious”) and he now favors same-sex marriage.
He didn’t change his mind, the polls did. The same would happen for all other politicians. If we change the polls, we win.
Scott
I don’t think he cares about gay marriage. He just says whatever the state in which he is competing will want to hear.

He is definitely the candidate of Wall Street. This from the NY Times:
“After Mr. Ford, a five-term Tennessee congressman, arrived in New York, he took a job as a vice chairman at Merrill Lynch (now Bank of America)…Mr. Ford declined to discuss what he is paid by the bank, but publicly available data suggests that he earns at least $1 million a year. Asked what role outsize pay packages played in fueling the financial crisis, Mr. Ford said he objected to capping executive compensation on Wall Street.”

Ford is anti-gay, anti-immigrant, anti-abortion, pro-gun, anit-Obama. And he thinks he have a chance to win in NY, Gillibrand will beat him easily. I don’t know Gillibrand too well, and not too fond of her because of what Gov Patterson did to Kennedy and pick her instead. But I’ll support her, because I hate a fake democrat coming in a liberal NY throwing around his extremist right-wing values.
dontblamemeivotedforhillary
Is he still running? I thought the Democrats took him into the back room and showed him the writing on the wall.
Tom N
I think he’s still running, he does have support from some democrats in NY, he has the popular AG Cuomo supporting his run, although maybe not endorsing him directly.
Robert, NYC
Tom N, I don’t want Ford at all. More importantly is to make sure that the governor is a democrat who won’t veto any marriage equality legislation in the future. If we ever get a republican, forget about it. Cuomo is pro marriage equality!
