Ricky Martin, Cynthia Nixon, Raúl Esparza Among Drama League Award Nominees

The nominees for the 78th annual Drama League Awards were announced today, and gay theater-lovers have plenty to be excited about: Openly gay nominees for the awards, which celebrate excellence in Broadway and Off-Broadway theater, includine Cynthia Nixon for Wit, Ricky Martin (above) for Evita, Denis O’Hare and Stephen Spinella for An Iliad and Raúl Esparza for Leap of Faith—all of whom are up for the prestigious once-in-a-career Distinguished Performance Award.

Follies, Porgy and Bess and Evita got nods in the Distinguished Revival of a Musical category, while The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures, The Lyons and One Man, Two Guvnors were among the nominees for Distinguished Production of a Play. Former talk show host Rosie O’Donnell is being given a special award for Unique Contribution to the Theater. Winners will be announced on May 18.
