So Ricky Martin didn’t sort of come out, at least not the way we assumed. Bungling a translation from Spanish-language TV Aqui, reports surfaced that Martin said “his heart could belong to a woman or a man.” What he actually said was, “The heart of Ricky Martin… if it belong[s] to a male or a female… I have never talked about it.” Which doesn’t mean Martin denied being gay, and in fact very much opens up the possibility that he is, because really, what straight guy tells an interviewer that his heart could, even possibly, belong to another dude?

My guess would be one that is trying to string along both a gay fan base and a straight fan base at the same time. Lets be honest, if Martin came out he would lose some straight fans. If he said he was completely straight he would lose some gay fans. Martin hasn’t kept his name in the press for this many years after actually doing anything without knowing how to sell an image.

My guess is that he is a Puer Eternis, and his heart will ever only belong to Ricky Martin. The open mouth smile says it all.

That’s not bungling. The tabloid was obviously intentionally twisting things around in a headline to draw attention and it worked.
He gave a non-answer and non-denial like he usually does, this isn’t anything new.
Bitch, Please!
Didn’t we already froth at the mouth over this a few days back? Slow news day, Queerty? Recycling is good for the environment but not for news.

Ugh, another Sean Hayes, Kevin Spacey or Anderson Cooper non-answer. Somebody stop it before I yawn myself to death.

@galefan2004:
I think he said as much in an interview many years ago. If I recall correctly, he said he didn’t want to alienate any fans by stating his preference. He wanted everyone to be able to enjoy his music equally.

If you’re reading this, Ricky: You can come out now. Your day job is over, anyway. You know, like that basketball player Amaechi, Clay Aiken, the old dude from M*A*S*H. Now that you are mostly forgotten, irrelevant, and have no income to lose,
you have been liberated.
Once, just once, I’d like to see someone come out DURING
his career, not after.

I can’t believe that people still doubt that he is gay, of course he is and everyone knows it, at least in Puerto Rico and all over the Spanish-speaking world.
Nate
@ProfessorVP: No kidding. Come out when everyone would care, not 8 years past your expiration date. I mean this could have been big news in 2001.
Matt
I don’t know if he’s gay, bi or straight, but what aggravates me is when he or anyone else for that matter making ambiguous statements.
Why not just say:
1. I don’t wish to answer personal questions.
2. I am straight.
3. I am bi.
4. I am gay.
5. I am still unsure.
I don’t think anyone should be outed, but in the same respect if interviewers keep asking him that question and all they’re going to get is a vague answer, why bother anymore.
It’s 2009 and I don’t think his career will suffer, since it’s not very active anyway. He’s probably in a position where he has enough money and doesn’t need work.
If he is gay is not answering the question because he doesn’t want to hurt his female fan base, then he should realize he’s not getting any younger and there are always new pop stars those youngsters are going to lust after.
