Rosie O’Donnell has a new sketch comedy show planned for MTV-owned Logo, which will premiere “sometime next year.” Who was it that’s been trumpeting the return of Mrs. O’Donnell to the comedy circuit? Oh yeah, it was us. We love her.
Sketch comedy is always a very bumpy road, so we’ll have to wait and see what the fortunes bring for the show. Good “Saturday Night Live” skits are so rare these days, when they’re even remotely funny they end up on the news. “Mad TV” hasn’t been on our televisions since…well, it’s been years since we watched that show. Really, since “The Carol Burnett Show” marathon on Nick At Nite, we haven’t cared about sketch comedy. And that marathon was a zillion years ago.
To O’Donnell’s benefit, MTV Networks have faith in O’Donnell’s ability to turn out a good show: her hysterical “Stand Up Spotlight” ran for several years on MTV-owned VH1, and that show was some of the best comedy ever put on television. (Please, bring it back in reruns!)
The cast of “Big Gay Show” includes bizarre nightlife impersario Johnny McGovern, who is very creative and quite funny, and his inclusion is a sign of good things to come. Fingers crossed.
