In the latest episode of Jonny McGovern’s ‘Hey Qween!’, RuPaul spills the tee on some of the most pressing questions on fans minds, including the importance of being yourself when auditioning for RuPaul’s Drag Race, how he comes up with Drag Race challenges, and the status of both RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 and All Stars Season 2!
Watch the video below.
“I’ll be doing it as long as the check clears.” – RuPaul on how long he plans to do RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Auditioning for RuPaul’s Drag Race
In the interview, RuPaul says that so many RuPaul’s Drag Race hopefuls submit audition videos and forget to be themselves in the videos. He says that queens who audition for the show should take a page from the game of Charades where to be successful you have to be yourself. Don’t try to give RuPaul what you think he wants to see, just be yourself because that’s really what he wants to see.
Coming up with Challenges for RuPaul’s Drag Race
Since RuPaul’s Drag Race isn’t limited to the types of challenges it can do, RuPaul says that they can imitate the challenges of other reality shows. He even hints that the queens of season 7 might have to pitch a product that they’ve created the same way that they do on ABC’s reality series Shark Tank.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 Update
According to this interview, they are still conducting auditions for season 7 and have not yet begun filming of any kind. The only hint to season 7 that they give, aside from the audition recommendations for hopeful contestants, is that filming will begin soon.
RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race Season 2 Update
Although RuPaul doesn’t mention that there will in fact be a second season of RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race, he alludes to the idea by address the campaigning that many of the queens are doing as well all of the conversation that he has noticed:
If we do ever have an All Stars—there’s been rumors about it forever! My god! …It’s funny, you know what happened… as I was on the Andy Cohen show and he said off the cuff ‘Is there gonna be an All Stars 2’ and I said ‘Sure!’ From that, I was really kind of being flippant, but that’s what started the whole thing. They are campaigning… Well maybe through positive thinking maybe it will happen, maybe the network will listen and it’ll happen.”
76* Queens Have Been “Released Into the Wild” From RuPaul’s Drag Race
As part of a game that they play in the interview, called ‘Look at Huh!’, Jonny shows RuPaul images of past contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race and asks him to say the first thing that comes to mind. We won’t spoil everything he says, but here are the queens they discuss and a bit of what Ru says about them:
Bebe Zhara Benet
RuPaul saw Bebe in Minneapolis before filming RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 1 and knew he wanted to do something with her because he thought she was amazing. “Camarooooon!”
RuPaul talks about the first time he saw Detox in Los Angeles, plus he reveals how phenomenal he thinks she is and that he believes she is “a smart, smart girl.”
“No one has killed that runway like Raja has since.”
RuPaul talks about the first time he met Willam at Outfest in 2007 and says, “I’m sure as a little boy, Willam was the smartest kid in school.”
“I was always hoping when I said ‘Can I call you Jiggly?’ she would say ‘Yes darling, everybody does!'”
“Jinkxy! …I could see her on Broadway, I could see her in movies.”
The defining moment of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3: “We set a precedent that no bitch will leave the stage after [she picked up India Ferrah].”
“Been a fan for many, many years…a true professional and just a lovely person”
“She’s old school drag… old style with a trick up her sleeves”
Victoria “Porkchop” Parker
Even though Porkchop was the first queen ever eliminated from RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul “[wants] her to know that she is still my baby.”
*Ornacia (the 76th queen)
After some uncontrollable laughter: “The breakout star from the season… her album is gonna be amazing!”
