Peruvian daily newspaper La Región reports that Hitler Baneo Núñez, 49, doused his son, Roger, with gasoline and set him on fire, after he had grown tired of being a laughing stock due to his son’s “homosexual inclinations.”
Roger, who also has tuberculosis, has been in a nursing home since March, thanks to the intervention of his aunt, Roxana. He was saved from the flames by some quick-thinking neighbors, though he still suffered burns to his face, arms and legs.
“My dad wanted to kill me because of those illnesses, but my aunt took me out of my father’s house and took me to Iquitos to put me in the institution ‘Algo bello para Dios’ since March 1,” the victim said, as translated by The Huffington Post. “Unfortunately, my father doesn’t accept me as I am.”
Neighbors say that Hitler Núñez was motivated not by his son’s homosexuality, but “because their relatives had been infected with the terrible evil [el terrible mal], after [Roger] had intercourse with his cousins ??and other teenagers living in their community.”
The local LGBT organization, the Comunidad Homosexual de la Región Loreto (CHERL) told BuzzFeed it hopes authorities treat this case as a human rights abuse, not just an assault:
We hope that this complaint … will be treated seriously by the authorities and that it can generate a change and call attention of the public to the homophobia that lives inside the home and is growing in society towards gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and trans people in the Loreto region.
Just last month, 20-year-old Jordan Sheard was sentenced to a mere 21 months after accidentally setting fire to and killing autistic gay teen, Steven Simpson.
