On Tuesday, Alabama Senator Doug Jones added his name as the 46th co-sponsor of the Equality Act, which seeks to add ‘sexual orientation and gender identity’ protections to existing civil rights laws.
Jones’ son Carson, an out zookeeper and Colorado State University student, gained a following during the election cycle, as his dad campaigned against noted homophobe and accused sexual assaulter Roy Moore.
In a new interview with the Washington Blade, Doug opens up about how Carson has inspired him.
Asked about whether his coming out affected his politics, Doug said:

“Has it affected me? Absolutely. Everything affects you, but obviously a child affects you more than anything else. I’m happy to do that, I’m happy to be there to defend him — when he can be defended, as we always say, when he can be defended.”
And on Carson’s Instagram presence, which features the occasional and tasteful shirtless photo, the senator said:
“We’ve all seen it.”

Well…..Shut my mouth!!!!! In ALABAMA???? FINALLY, a politico who totally understands that gays are born gay and it is NOT a chosen lifestyle. Yes, friends and lovers…..the wheels of progress are moving. Slowly, but they are moving. All it takes are those who are educated enough and also willing to tell those ‘holier than thou’ @$$holes that they are WRONG and Gays are people, too….and deserve the SAME rights as straight folks. I almost fell over when Carson’s father won over Roy Moore, that hypocritical dip-$H!T. And the wheels keep moving……slowly….but moving.

Apparently in that part of the country, it takes a gay son or daughter to convince a parent that gays are born gay. The problem is that so many gay kids stay in the closet because they’re intimidated by the attitudes of their parents, their church and the society around them. Many will grow up and move to gay-friendly cities on the east or west coasts, and their hometowns will have lost some of their most talented youth.

Plus, since all the queers leave to find better lives elsewhere, there’s nobody left in these hometowns to fight against the prejudices that exist there. So rural folks end up in a conservative bubble of unchallenged prejudice.

love the pics, the story, love it all. the only correction i would make is roy moore should not be described as an accused “sexual assaulter” but rather an accused “sexual child molester”. 13 and 14 YO’s cannot give consent, and pervs 3 times their age should not be soft peddled. there is no situation that excuses a man in his mid thirties dating a child of 13/14. forget being able to vote, or buy a drink, she can barely get into a movie theatre (PG13) let alone an R rated movie. Moore should be running from the law, not running for office

The story here is quite obvious, and has little to do with how average you think the senator’s son is. It has to do with apparent social progress in Alabama. The “beefcake”, if you think it qualifies as such, is just window dressing. This is Queerty after all.

Unfortunately I have to agree with those above me, Southern Democrats need a lot of wiggle room to even have a hope of being elected, at least from what I’ve seen living here a few years. Fun fact: I’ve seen more open and obviously gay and trans men and women here in NC than I ever did in Cali. I’m not quite sure why that is yet.
