SHOCKER! Fox News Is Perplexed By Facebook’s Progressive Gender ID Option

Yesterday, nearly everyone rejoiced as Facebook, with some nudging from GLAAD, added more than 50 additional gender identification options for transgender and gender nonconforming people. Well, everyone except for some grumpy people at Fox News, who ridiculed the social media giant’s progressive action.

While one male reporter made a truly hilarious “joke” that he changed his Facebook ID to “intersex,” it’s the “neither” option that seems to most confuse Fox reporters.

Watch the “fair and balanced” coverage below.

Aren’t the terms male & female reference to sex while man & woman reference gender?

  • jbeau

Sociologically speaking, male/female/man/woman are defined as sex categories. Gender is masculine/feminine/anything in between.

Faux Noise lives in a constant state of being perplexed… everything is beyond them.

Facebook sucks. Anyone who uses it is weak.

@tookietookie: NO! anyone that use FaceBook sucks..

I doubt the Fox media are the only people saying, “What the fuck? I always thought gay people were gay. Now they have FIFTY different identities? How many more letters must we add to LGBTQWTFOMGXYZ?”

Sorry, but claiming that we represent 50 separate genders (50!) does not bode well. It’s an invitation for scorn and ridicule. Especially since it seems that many of the qualifiers are suspiciously the same.

“Whatever that is…” is such a telling phrase from a news person. Do your research, buddy and stop sounding like an ignorant moron before talking about it on TV. And adding “Hm!” at the end of it makes you sound like you’re a 5th grader. You’re either single or your wife is totally cheating on you.

@BJ McFrisky: “I always thought gay people were gay” … sexual orientation and gender identity are wildly different things.

My question for Facebook is WHY ! Who wants to be identified as Trans ? it is my experience that those who suffer from GID ( Gender Identity Dysphoria ) and Transition to the opposite gender Seek to blend with that gender, so wouldn’t they seek to be simple male or female depending on which day they’re going ? The only people I can see that would want this TRANS label are those who don’t seek surgery and consider themselves transgender and not transsexual, because all the transsexual I’ve known don’t want a trans label they want to be seen and regarded as either men or women.

From reading Queerty, I’ve gotten the impression that the main purpose of Facebook is as a tool for bullies to bully LGBT teens into suicide. And its secondary purpose seems to be to censor photos of gay men kissing.

So why do these 50-gender people want to be on it?

  • BillZaumen

Sory, but Fox News is correct. Groups like GLAAD making 50 odd different gender categories only makes us look petty and stupid.

This is the hypocrisy of Faux News: They claim to be supporters of a free market — until someone makes a business decision with which they disagree. CVS decides to stop selling cigarettes? How ludicrous. Facebook responds to customer complaints about sexual identity? How ludicrous. Bakery wants to refuse to make a wedding cake for a gay couple? It’s their right as a business! Faux News is not “news,” it is an entertainment channel for uneducated twits.

    @BJ McFrisky:
Most of the options are largely redundant, so that people can use their preferred wording for what is essentially the same or very similar identity. Some of the identities are culturally specific (two-spirit), and others are specific variations of non-binary identities.

@Snapdragon: Binary transsexual people aren’t the end-all be-all of transness, and this update (largely) isn’t for them, especially if they’ve chosen to completely blend/be stealth. This is for people who either consider their transness to be an intergal part of their identity (which is true for some binary trans people), or people who have a non0binary gender identity.

Hey! I use FB and this a good thing even though I would never use it.
