Much like music, antigay county clerk Kim Davis has helped bring people together, whether you’re a law-abiding pro-marriage equality citizen or you’re not. Now the charming and charismatic Notorious K.I.M. is being suggested as a nominee for “Time’s Person of the Year.” We get it. In 1938 Hitler received the dubious honor.
Staunchly right-wing legal group Liberty Counsel represented the notorious Kentucky clerk in her unrelenting and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to disregard the Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling. The organization released a statement Wednesday urging supporters to “vote for Kim” as “Time’s Person of the Year,” since she “inspired a nation and the world to fight for religious liberty when she chose a prison cell rather than sacrificing her conscience.”
In a recent email, Liberty Counsel chairman Matthew Staver compared Davis to other Christian leaders.
In an email to supporters, Liberty Counsel chairman Mathew Staver likened Davis to Christian leaders “like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Jan Huss, John Bunyan, Dietrich Bonhoeffer,” while continuing to insist that “Kim adhered to Kentucky law while standing for her First Amendment right to religious liberty and freedom of conscience.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
Kim Davis became the first Christian in America jailed as a result of the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex “marriage.”
She joins a long list of people who were imprisoned for their conscience. People who today we admire like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Jan Huss, John Bunyan, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and others like them. Each had their own cause, but they all shared the same resolve not to violate their consciences.
Kim adhered to Kentucky law while standing for her First Amendment right to religious liberty and freedom of conscience.Liberty Counsel represented Kim throughout her ordeal.
Staver may indeed get his wish: TIME editors are choosing their winner on December 9.
Readers can have their say in a face-off poll. choose a winner with the announcement on December 9.
Leading to the selection, they’re asking readers to “have their say,” in a face-off poll that ends tomorrow.

sportsguy1983
Too bad most people commenting no here are ignorant about what Time’s “Person of the Year” is supposed to embody. According to the managing editor in a quote last year: “The criterion is “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.” This criteria explains why Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin (twice), Nikita Khrushchev, king Faisal of Saudi Arabia, ding Xiaoping (twice), Ken Starr, and Vladimir Putin were picked. The “Person of the Year” is not a popularity contest of well liked people who do good, but it is someone (or thing now) that affects news in a major way. You can argue she didn’t affect news in a big enough way compared to other people, but you can’t say she didn’t have a significant influence on news in 2015.
Poloboy50
Stop giving her any press; I had already forgotten about the Bitch.
Why can’t ISIS ever find these people.
Bryguyf69
Well, since Hitler got the honors in 1938, I suppose Kim Davis should be considered as well. But purely on an objective basis, the answer is no. She has neither influenced nor inspired enough people or events to be anything more than a blip in the news. There is no Kim Davis movement, and the cultural tide continues flowing against her side. And gay marriages are happening in Kentucky. In other words, her tirade was essentially for naught.
onthemark
Time really should change the title of this award to “Newsmaker of the Year” – after all it was “MAN of the Year” for decades before they changed it to “Person of the Year” (1970s?), so they can easily change it again. I hear there was always some misunderstanding about it even back in Hitler times, and readers nowadays are so-o-o-o literal.
If Harvard and other colleges can change the title of the dormitory “House Masters,” to “babysitters” or whatever, this seems the way to go!
@Bryguyf69: But I think you have it right, Kim Davis is not that big a deal and was just a “blip in the news.”
Bryguyf69
@sportsguy1983 wrote:

As someone who watches 6+ of news per day, in addition to reading the NY Times and various online sources, I can say, no, “she didn’t have a SIGNIFICANT influence on news in 2015.” She was and is a merely blip in the news cycle. Her “influence” was geographically and temporally localized. There is no Kim Davis movement, and she didn’t set any cultural or legal precedent. Indeed, there is very little debate among independent legal scholars about the topic. She couldn’t do her job so she should have let someone else do it. Period. Conscientious objection applies to oneself, not an entire workplace. And that is actually what happened. Gay marriage licenses were issued soon after and continues unabated. There was so little to the Kim Davis story that it was barely covered on the Sunday morning new shows. Like I said, a mere blip.
davenbill
I’d need a bunch of those covers because I have diarrhea. Now if we could flush her away with the rest of the sh!t. Putting her on the cover will send Time’s circulation plummeting.
Matt Achine
@Matthew Hussey @sportsguy1983 @Michael Czogalla: You guys get it. This was a year of doubling down on blatant wrongdoing, and she could be interchangeable with Trump, Fiorina, the cop suicide scammer from Illinois, Patrick Lynch, etc. Totally indicative of how shamelessly bigoted and corrupt American society is now. To that end, collective moral failing could be person of the year.
Bryguyf69
@onthemark: Time has admitted that the “honor” was, and still is, a publicity stunt to sell magazines. So provocative choices sometimes replace logical choices. As such, you’re right, even “Person of the Year” is wrong. Remember when Time chose the computer as their “Person of the Year” in 1982? Even “Newsmaker” isn’t descriptive enough. If making news was good enough then the Kardashians should have been on their short list for the last several years.
Speaking of which … ugh, I hope that limelight whore, Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner, isn’t in the running. I wholeheartedly agreed with Bob Costas that her ESPN award was a travesty and a pathetic attempt at publicity by ESPN.
Bryguyf69
Josh Duggar … LOL.
His name showed up in news about sexual abuse, “Reality” TV, gay marriage, Presidential politics (re: Huckabee’s support) and the Ashley Madison scandal. Do I seriously think he should be Time’s Person of the Year? Of course not, but he made more news than Kim Davis
Kieran
It doesn’t matter since nobody reads Time magazine anymore anyway.
Nahald
Person of the year ?? More like schmuck of the year ! If TIME were to choose her I’d have to presume there’s something wrong with their staff…like mental ilness !
Bob LaBlah
Seriously folks, WHO reads Time or Newsweek anymore?
Bryguyf69
Objectively, it’s not even close. The only logical choice is ISIS/ISIL, or more broadly, the Islamic Terrorist (which I realize, is politically incorrect, and will evoke Islamophobia). I would choose the broader term simply because the Charlie Hebdo massacre was caused by a branch of al-Quaeda. Whether ISIS or the Islamic Terrorist, no other entity has had such a global influence on the economy, security, military, culture and psyche. For example, it is currently influencing the immigration debate globally. And the current conflict between Turkey and Russia is caused, in part, by ISIS. In fact, all 5 UN Permanent Member nations have had citizens beheaded by ISIS. Even mundane activities like Christmas shopping or attending a public event has been hampered by them, especially in big cities. Brussels, where NATO headquarters are located, was shut down for days at the mere threat of an attack.
Simply put, no other entity has had more impact, in more ways, for longer periods, on more people, on more nations, than ISIS and the Islamic Terrorist.
Juanjo
She is a complete non-entity, always and always will be. She turned herself and her state into a byword for bigoted idiot. On the Time webpage she is running 93% against. To give an example, the head of ISIS has a higher approval rating for the title.

If Obama can get a peace prize for absolutely nothing, then this can happen. Time has it’s own criteria.
Patrick
Why do we keep giving this person attention??
trell
Who cares? It’s only another face on another magazine at the end of the day.
TIME magazine and this whole “Person of the Year” thing is nothing more than an advertising stunt for them to sell their crappy magazine anyway, that has now suddenly become ‘tradition’
If they stick Kim Davis on the front cover, I’ll just have one less reason to buy the magazine.
And if the TIME editors had any sense at all, they’d consider avoiding putting her on there, purely for the fact that it would seriously damage sales.
msfrost
She’ll be with such luminaries, as Adolf Hitler.

Definitely not! That is what she wants, to defy the law and to discriminate against American citizens as well as marry and divorce as many as she chooses. She should be bypassed and put in jail for her crimes against humanity.
