“I Went To New York City To Get Gay Married And All I Got Was This Lousy Mug.” While gay couples cannot marry in New York, if you bother trotting down to Manhattan’s City Clerk’s office, you can take home a wonderful parting gift from the shop: mugs featuring a male or a female couple with little hearts that say “We do.” They cost $10. And they’ll go great with your marriage certificate domestic partnership paperwork. Too bad the city’s professional gays won’t be drinking from them.
The mugs are a “slap in the face,” says Ron Zacchi, executive director of Marriage Equality New York. “I think that the store and the city probably feel that they’re progressive by including LGBT paraphernalia in their shop.” But: “It’s celebrating inequality.”

Mugs? Is that something we should be complaining about?!?!?
Frankly, I don’t give a rat’s ass about being able to get married. Why? Because, in my state I can be fired simply because I’m gay. While gay marriage has become the cause-celebre, hundreds of thousands of us can still be fired simply because we are gay. Why should I care about getting married when get fired just for being myself?
ENDA is infinitely more important than gay marriage. It’s also something that can help establish gay rights. After all, only hard-core homophobes would argue that gays & lesbians shouldn’t be allowed to work.

@Jackson: But, but, this is NEW YORK! Everything that happens in this gay unfriendly place masquerading as a Gay mecca is automatically relevant! Didn’t you get the memo? New York and New Yorkers are by default full of shit, since they never stand for what they say they do. Letting the “gay media” ensconced in that shithole tell you what is what is not the best way to go about dealing with reality in this country. And now back to the eternal nobody of our community, Anderson Cooper and his trivial and cowardly careerist concerns. *Yawn*.

@Jackson: In Iran people are killed for being gay. Should that stop you from caring about ENDA? I have the perspective I need to realize that mugs<ENDA<killings whilst being able to care about marriage.

Notice the images that they chose for the same-sex couple mugs. Both of those couples have their hands firmly placed in their pockets — because that position SO represents a couples wedding day !! Those two images on the mugs are actually kind of homophobic if you think about it. The images of the opposite couple is not like that at all – they are shown together as a real couple.
We live in such a homophobic culture — it is time we started pointing these things out and then demanding change…. demanding the dignity and respect that we deserve.
