While some 300 opponents of same-sex marriage braved the rain yesterday to demonstrate in front of the Statehouse to convince Gov. Chet Culver to do something about the State Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling (ya know, before 2012, when voters will have a chance to vote on a constitutional amendment), EVEN THOUGH HE CAN’T, openly gay Democratic State Sen. Matt McCoy was receiving a death threat.
He received the threatening phone call on Monday, but because it wasn’t received at the Capitol Building, the Des Moines Police are responsible for investigating. Way too early to jump to conclusions, and the phoner could’ve been placed by a single unnerved constituent, but let’s be clear: Threatening violence and death is no way to make your voice heard.

why is it these threats only go one way?
do supporters of equality simply have tact innately?
tavdy79
@rogue dandelion: No, it’s because supporters of equality actually believe and (crucially) put into practice the second part of the Great Commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself”, sometimes known as “do as you would be done by”.
Attmay
@tavdy79: Love thy neighbor? Whoever said that never met my neighbors.

It’s interesting, but the typical reaction our side to something like this is “Way too early to jump to conclusions…” While on the other side it’s immediately deposited into an arsenal of intimidation against religion examples and used against us mericlessly.

Well you Iowa church pastors and so called Christians should be jumping up and down for joy as there is one less gay running around. Yes, 11 year old Carl Walker-Hoover’s mom found him hanging by a rope this morning in their Mass home, dead. Turns out he was being merciless taunted at school about acting gay so he took his own life. And since your bible, the unerring word of God, proclaims that all homosexuals are to be stoned to death, I know you’ll be praising and singing praises to your Lord during services this week. Can I get an Amen! Halleluiah! Young Carl is the 4th middle school student to commit suicide this year due to being taunted about “appearing” to be gay. Amen! Chalk up another one for God! So you Christians keep acting on the Word of your God that gays should be stoned to death, march at your capitol, and declare your self righteous anger at the Iowa Supreme Court. We heathen will keep working for love, peace, understanding and tolerance.
