This post is part of a series of Queerty interviews with models, trainers, dancers, and, well, people who inspire us to stay in shape–0r just sit on the couch ogling them instead.
Name: Sky Vargas, 33 (@thebeaunextdoor)
Home: Queens, New York
Occupation, besides training: I am a fashion designer for my own brand called, The Beau Next Door. It is a premium athleisure wear brand, along with swimwear and fun casual tees. For the past 12 years, I’ve been working as art director in NYC.
Favorite Gym: That would have to be the Equinox Gym in Greenwich Village. I love the large windows and all the sunlight peering through, it keeps me motivated. It’s also central to where I meet with my friends to eat and hang out.
Favorite Work Out Song: I like something repetitive with bass. Right now its Electronica, “Treat Me Like Fire remix” by Lion Babe, “Jasmine” by Capital Kaos, or anything M.I.A. It can’t be anything too mainstream because it will start to feel played out for me everywhere else.
Recommended Work-Out Foods: I love the Perfect Bar, it’s organic and full of healthy fatty proteins. They have an assortment of flavors, and my personal favorites is Maple-Almond and Coconut. Sometimes, I overdo it and have one before and after my workouts.
Favorite athletic outfit: Definitely my Beau Razorback tank with my new black compression shorts that hopefully I’ll be releasing this summer. My gym outfits usually show a cute amount of skin and let me see what I’m working with.
How do you balance staying in shape and having fun? I would say I try to make some of my workouts fun, and sometimes I’ll take a different class to change things up. I also just try to stay active throughout the week and weekends. I’m more of a go hiking and explore NY during the day, versus going out all night.
Tips for staying in shape: I have three tips for staying in shape, the first one is having different workout buddies. Every friend I work out with teaches me something new, and I find working out with someone also motivates you both to push yourselves more than you would alone. My second tip is to be consistent and set mini goals for yourself. Don’t be flaky, so If you packed to go to the gym, go! If you are lifting only 35 lbs two weeks ago, push yourself to do more this week. The third and final tip is sleep. You have to get enough rest to do it all over again the next day. I’ve been guilty of not being rested enough and I end up half-assing it, which hurts your progress in the long run. So get as many zzz’s as you can.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
What do you keep on your nightstand? On my nightstand is a tiny jar of tiger-balm, and I love smelling it before I go to sleep. I also have my La Mer lip-balm, a white Orchid, and a mini humidifier that changes colors.

These are the kinds of articles that make me wonder if I have been wrong for over 50 years. Maybe I’m not gay. Maybe I’ve NEVER been gay. ‘Cause if THIS is gay, I’m not it!
