American employers used to verify an applicant’s identity by submitting a person’s social security number and gender to the Social Security Administration (SSA) for a ID match, a method that inevitably outed and endangered trans applicants when their gender identity did not match their birth gender in SSA records. But luckily the SSA has decided to give up the practice of gender matching which will help protect trans applicants from joblessness, harassment, and other workplace discrimination.
Pretty cool, especially considering how hard it can be for a trans person just to get work. Now all we need is a trans inclusive Employment Nondiscrimination Act to make sure trans folk have legal job protections all the way around.
