A brand new ad by McCafé that revolves around a moving and sophisticated coming-out story has earned the wrath of Taiwanese religious fundamentalists who want the chain boycotted.
The video, which is just past the minute-and-a-half-mark, is the third in McCafé’s “More Warmth in Conversations” campaign. It portrays a tense moment between father and son, both huddled at a McCafé table. The son passes a coffee cup to his dad that reads “I like boys” and the father rises up, upset.
The young man is left alone, visibly distraught, but soon his father returns, jots something down on a coffee cup, and hands it to his son.
The cup reads: “I accept that you like boys.”
It was released Friday night on McDonald’s Taiwan’s Facebook page and has been already been viewed 1.5 million times.
Not surprisingly, many of the island’s religious fundamentalists were not delighted by the ad.
The Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family released a statement asking parents to boycott Mickey D’s stat:
Now, even if you want to just take a leak at a McDonald’s bathroom, you can’t help but feel polluted…. [The Alliance] does not approve of the ideological stand behind the advertisement.”
“Because McDonald’s is frequented by many children, it is especially important to oppose the promotion of same-sex behavior.. [The Alliance] opposes all advertising that miseducate children on sexual behavior [and] rebukes and boycotts all enterprises that are polluting the next generation.”

Incredible that there are still people out there that choose to ostracize or even bury their gay sons, rather than embrace and love them.
AtticusBennett
@Bauhaus: RIGHT!?
one of my best friends has been performing on Broadway for years. Is his family proud of him? Nope. He’s gay, and his success on broadway embarrassed them, too. why? well, you know. because being a successful dancer is like, uh, “FEM” or something.
the negative reactions to coming out puzzle me more and more as i get older. your kid has always been gay. being mad at him for being gay makes about as much sense as being mad at him for “not being the right height”
Kieran
Incredible that in 2016 we don’t have commercials like this airing in the United States.
Mack
@Kieran: The Right wingers would have a crapfest. One Million Moms would be calling for a boycott of McD and we all know how that would turn out, maybe five people would stop going.

McMoving.

McDonalds food makes gay people look like straight people.
loren_1955
The commercial was very touching. Wish we had than kind of openness and acceptance in the U.S. instead of so much hatred. Fairy tale hope perhaps.

And we all know the not new French McDonalds ad, don’t we? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xGRii6IA1M
Brian
If he likes guys, that’s great. But that does NOT mean that he has to identify as gay. He should not have to identify as anything.
bobbyjoe
The Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family immediately begins obsessing about McDonald’s bathroom.
What is it with these ant-gay/anti-trans groups and their absolute obsession with bathrooms? It seems to be all they ever think about. Seriously, dudes, get help.
martinbakman
@Kieran: My understanding is that commercial was shown on their FB page in Taiwan. American companies like All State of done the same thing.

The World needs a whole lot fewer fundamentalist religious nuts, and more Humanity. But you can only usually find that in Atheism, or Buddhism. This is a wonderful commercial – I might even go back to McDonalds – for their coffee – the food is inedible. Congrats to McD! Well done. And shame to the fundamentalists who feel closer to hate and bigotry than to compassion – they must have a different Jesus I guess. (Had there ever been one).
Transiteer
@AtticusBennett: Or left handed.
joeyty
@Transiteer: Atheism ?? Like the leaders of North Korea ? (And even the Dalai Lama isn’t too cool about practicing homosexuality).
joeyty
@Bauhaus: And you often can’t guess who’ll be cool and who won’t be. Sonny Bono was more accepting of Chas coming out as lesbian than Cher was. And even Barbra Streisand wasn’t too cool about her son’s effeminacy. She got better about it in time though.
Bauhaus
@joeyty:
You’re right. The prejudice against us runs deep, even without any religious or moral conviction to back it up.

If they’d gone to Starbucks instead they could have bonded over a gay semen latte. So creamy!
Marky
Adorable commercial.

@ AtticusBennett @loren_1955 Agreed
GC1985
@Brian: um here we go with the identifying crap. He is gay. Get over your self hate already and stop projecting your insanity onto others.
@joeyty: You always find ways to brownnose religious people. Atheists aren’t all North Korean and most atheists are indeed cool with gay people. And I am sure the Dalai Lama isn’t as hateful as many US based conservative Christians.
@Kieran: Oh but when we do the republican party, you always support, voices hatred and venom. I am sure Donald Trump would call for a boycott of whatever company that does.
Oh and we have had commercials like this one… Maybe you right wing brownnosers like joeyty and kieran need to open your eyes a bit.
joeyty
@GC1985: Yeah, like I just did with the Dalai Lama (fool).
joeyty
@GC1985: Because I’m known for such friendly posts on Queerty re. Franklin Graham. And Muslims. LOL.
joeyty
@GC1985: As if the atheist Soviet Union was so gay friendly. LOL. (You went right to Siberia for crimes against the state).
joeyty
@GC1985: And I say such great things about the NYC homophobes Rev. Manning and Rev. Diaz. (Seriously ….who are these goofs like GC who post on Queerty and just make up things ??)
GC1985
@joeyty: Four posts of generalities and ignorance that say nothing at all. Again most atheists aren’t Soviet or North Korean. Get your head out of the sand, you perpetual brownnoser.
@joeyty: You make things up as you go along. You vapid airhead.
GC1985
If you were so fair you wouldn’t be making stupid air headed assertions about atheists. According to opinion polling, atheists are generally more accepting than Christians period.
joeyty
@GC1985: Shush, fool. You’re so stupid you think it comes down to choosing one side or the other. You probably would have worshipped Stalin because Hitler hated him.
joeyty
@GC1985: While you’re brownnosing homophobic atheists like Pol Pot and Castro, let’s see some links to my sucking up to the religious (as you claim).
GC1985
@joeyty: Your latest response probably tells me you’re a Christian conservative and Republican. Have fun replying to no one. You aren’t even worth a response at this point based on how frigging stupid and ignorant you are.
Have a nice day log cabin closet case.
joeyty
@GC1985: And you’re a sily-dilly paranoid loon who should have the computer taken away from you.
Stached1
This is a good commercial, but it would be better had the dad written on the cup, “I love you”, instead of “I accept that you like boys’.
olfwob
@Brian: you are right, but we have to come out at some point to our friends and families haven`t we? And i guess that`s a good way to do it, because it`s a public place and the dad had to behave if he had reacted in another way.
