Soulja Boy—the 21-year-old rapper behind “Booty Meat”, “Booty Got Swag” and “Pimp Slap Dat Hoe”— recently responded to racist Facebook haters by calling them “faggots” and “white faggots.” He then deleted said comments. This comes on the heels of Kobe Bryant and Noah Joakim’s televised “faggot” slurs and the Tracy Morgan debacle. So should we prepare the press gauntlet that all celebrities must now go through whenever they call someone a faggot? No. In fact, we should probably congratulate Soulja Boy for JUST calling his detractors “white faggots”, especially since he’s made a career calling his enemies much, MUCH worse.

I think it’s more a case of a person with unchecked aggression, and in a general sense. He clearly doesn’t respect the LGBT community, but at the same time, I wouldn’t consider this a targeted attack against us. As a transsexual and a linguist, I find myself staring down both sides of this issue.
On one hand, I hear other transsexuals talk about how “tranny” is “our word” and we need to take it back. On the other, I find that I’m not personally offended by the word so much as the sentiment and the type of emotion behind it. A person doesn’t have to use bad words at all to convey that they look down on me for who I am, and the same words that are extremely hurtful in certain contexts seem to me to be dialed back to merely offensive and disrespectful in others.
It’s a fact of life that right now, urban culture uses “faggot” as an insult toward someone that has nothing to do with their sexual orientation. Because that’s a hate word in a much more serious sense when used in the context of harassing a gay person, it ends up causing this problem. I’m not saying that SB is right to communicate the way he does, but he IS a product of his culture. The underlying messages of his status updates were actually worthwhile.

I find it funny when rappers talk about whitey holding them down. They make millions because the can rhyme words; not sing them, but just speak them angrily over a beat. Then they say they make their music to raise the spirits of their community and people, but their songs are always about treating women like crap, selling drugs, fighting or killing someone, and teaching elementary school kids the white man is holding them down.

I guess whitey is the reason he can’t afford to feed his family without selling drugs or stealing.
Maybe the current rap world needs to reassess themselves. You can see in his comments that Soulja Boy has anger and hate when he says faggot and white. You can read the disgust he has for both and the fact is that people will still buy his album. I was simply saying that a lot of the comments veered off topic of discussing simply Soulja Boy, and the other celebrities of late, to a black vs white issue and it shouldn’t be regardless if Tracey, Soulja, Kobe, and the other basketball player are black or partially black.

@Pedro: Pedro, I could not agree with you more. I have found over time that this site caters to the emotionally immature by presenting stories in a very emotionally immature way. Soldier Boy’s comments were awful and he should be ashamed of how he decided to express himself but he is a young kid with a troubled background. It should surprise no one that he is not yet able to communicate his feelings in a rational and respectful manner.
I find it very curious that queerty has framed this story in a way that is designed to invite all of the white and gay bigots to do some Black bashing. They’ve ignored the substance of what he had to say about his frustration with the constant barrage of racist comments from white visitors to his facebook page. It’s transparent and sad. Soldier boy had to grow up and take responsibility and the editors at queerty should just say that they hate Black people and be proud of it.
Note to the editors: Soldier Boy is not a “gangster rapper.” Nice choice of code word.

It’s a sad world we live in today.
To the blacks: not all whites want to “hold you down”. In all honesty, I could care less if you are white or black, but saying ignorant stuff like that is why a lot of white people get annoyed at the pity party you all throw.
