Country musician Steve Grand wrote the following letter to Queerty via Twitter in response to the debate over his “tiny speedo” pic and our posting of some of his shirtless pics. Grand then reposted the letter in the Queerty “Comments” section of an admittedly “fawning” story we published today. See our response to Grand at the end of his letter to Queerty.
Queerty,
No I want YOU to stop ONLY posting the handful of half naked pictures of me taken over the last 6 years to get your page clicks. I’ve taken thousands of photos fully clothed over the last years. only 1% of my posts (on Instagram) show my bare chest. There’s a time a place for that.. but EVERY time?
Related: Steve Grand’s Parents Learned He Was Gay By Reading An AOL Chat
It is sites like YOURS that create the impression that I am always shoving sex in people’s faces. When, in fact, it’s a small fraction of the time. I have enough to work against. It sucks that gay media makes it all the more difficult.
And even now you’re doing the same thing in this post. To make me look like a hypocrite.
Shame on you for creating senseless division within this community that already faces enough from the outside world. You would tank a struggling artist’s career if it would get u a couple page clicks. Utterly shameful.
Related: Steve Grand Says It’s Time For Trans People To Stop Taking The Backseat
You have been trying to sink me since before I even started to climb. I’ve been silent 4 2 years of this & I’ve had it. Shame on u.
You are as trashy as the worse tabloids but u are even WORSE than them because you go after people without power or money (myself)
I should be able to post a shirtless pic here and there (1% of my Instagram) without it being the ONLY way you represent me.
All publicity is NOT good publicity.
Related: Steve Grand Tells GMA He Went Through Gay Conversion Therapy
If you can’t post about me in a way that even comes close to resenting me on the whole then I’d rather you not bother at all. Nick Jonas and Zac Efron flaunt their bodies WAY more than I do and are not treated this way.
There is nothing wrong with the pictures of me that are out there. I am not ashamed. I am a young man and SOMETIMES like to show my body like most all of us young men do. But you create this weird dynamic where you slut-shame as you simultaneously fawn over a young man. It is very bizarre and worse, it sends a toxic message to young people still coming to terms with their sexuality. Haven’t gay men been taught to feel enough shame about their sexuality?
#getyourshittogether #stopdividingus
I know I’ll get accused of whining and being a hypocrite. And I know I’m suppose to shut up and never stick up for myself. And I know I “brought in on myself” and I should have just known when I was a 19 year old student putting myself through college that I shouldn’t have posed in those kinds of photos (because none of you have ever made questionable choices when you were 19, right?) But I’m just a guy as flawed as all the rest of you. I’m not rich and famous. I just want to make music, play it for my fans, and yeah, sometimes have fun on a boat in a Speedo and share some of those moments with my fans who have been so supportive.
Okay, Internet. Do what you do to people who dare to speak up for themselves. Fire away.
–Steve Grand
Queerty responds: Okay, Steve, we hear you loud and clear. We are huge fans, and Queerty readers love you. We dig your half naked pics, but you look (and sound) pretty great in clothing too.

If that’s the case then he shouldn’t have led with his body to start his career…. He used his looks for marketing now he’s crying about it…..

Well, he has a point there. Good on you for sharing an honest assessment in defending yourself, Steve.

The easiest way to stop “slut-shaming” is to stop being a slut. Jus’ sayin’.
(Get this man a publicist! He’s scrambling to extend his 15 minutes and not doing a terribly good job of it.)
Milton Appleby
This has just become beyond ridiculous. It goes both ways. You can’t post pictures of yourself in certain attire and not expect a response. The media and Steve have made this more of an issue than it should be.
Jimmy Radosta
Girlfriend needs to understand that he probably wouldn’t be on anyone’s radar without the eye candy. Own it – and be grateful for it!

ah the poor, crucified (shirtless preferred) artist. you are not alone Steve in wanting to be taken seriously clothed, however since your audience is human (gay got nothing to do with it) they will sexually. (period). you could dress in a Wiley Coyote suit and have fans frothing. furthermore you want them to, need them to. Chris Evans, Markey-Mark, among others have sworn off the beefcake, but they still make headlines when they flash their tits. enjoy it, use it, go ahead and shake your hear with bemused sadness the next time someone wants you to take your shirt off for a pic. then take your shirt off and smile, be cause when they stop asking, and they will stop, you will miss it.

Is slut shaming the same thing as admiration, because honestly that is more what is happening I think
Charles Sherwood Morrill
Then he should have never posed for the pics and he should stop wearing skimpy bikinis now. What he should do , is own what he did and be proud of it. Any press keeps him in the spotlight
Luc Helterbrand
Wearing a sexy Speedo is not dressing like a Slut. He has every right to show off his admirable body
oregonduckbrad
Oh, lord, please. Ugh. So much wrong with this. Publicity IS publicity, and he knew full well what he was getting into when 19 and posing for provocative pictures (which I happen to fully enjoy–stand behind those pics! It’s not as if you were doing porn, for christ’s sake!).
He needs to take himself less seriously, and yes, hire a damned publicist! Weighing in on a site like this to defend your career decisions, and gasp–wardrobe–makes you look small. Just sayin’…
Lastly, Queerty is in the BUSINESS of producing salacious material in the express interest of generating clicks. If you’re thinking Queerty is a charity, always sacrificing clicks for how artists are being portrayed, you are sadly mistaken. Think of them as the match. You provided the gasoline w/your previous career decisions. Don’t get mad a the match for having the ability to start a fire…

If you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences. Steve seems to be complaining that he cannot pose for and post revealing photos consequence-free. Here is a tip, you can only control your own behavior. Once you put something into the world, you cannot control how people respond to it. If you do not want this kind of attention, then remove the photos that draw it and stop posting more of them. Problem solved.
Zekester
Part of me says that he has a point and part of me says that he’s WAY overreacting. Most of the posts of him shirtless have been very positive. Sometimes the only shame in something is he shame one assumes and brings on himself. If he thinks that any post that shows him shirtless is shaming him instead of admiring him, then it’s he who is doing the shaming.
Lighten up a little by Steve. You are a good looking, talented man with a great body and you have every right to be proud of all of these things. People can enjoy ALL of those things about you without objectifying you are shaming you. Those who shame you are jealous and acting out on their own issues, not yours. Let them go like water off a duck’s back. Otherwise you are going to be miserable as a celebrity and should consider returning to obscurity. It’s the price that comes with fame. You’re not the first to discover this.
LondonCalling
Give me a break! Someone who uses his sexuality to sell his records (wait, has he actually sold any?) suddenly is appalled to find that the very community he has marketed himself to using sex is now only interested in that aspect? What a load of crap. PS: Not every day is chest day, bitch. Why don’t you roll over and see if there is a snooze button on your 15 minutes of fame.
Deon Brown
I interviewed him once. Such a genuinely nice guy. Since when has it been such a curse to be good looking — especially in the gay “community”? Are we becoming just a “mean” community? Steve can wear a Speedo, a thong, or even a potato sack. He, handsome, but even if he were ugly, he’s human. Let’s not be the ugly ones. Doesn’t look good.
lauraspencer
@Thom Solo:
At such a young age, she is a GRAND mess!
“Slut Shaming” has become an easy and over used “defense”. Grand chose to take photos in various states of undress and post them. If anyone is shaming Grand it is Grand himself. He doesn’t have to post those photos or have them taken if he doesn’t want to be seen as a him-bo or a “slut”.
sportyguy1983
Hey Stevie, if you don’t like being criticized (whether justified or not) then don’t seek to be famous and to have fans. One of the realities of being in the entertainment field is public scrutiny. As they say, if you can’t stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. And FYI, nick Jonas and zac efron are also mediocre in the talent pool and only excel because of their looks. If they complain then they are as ridiculous as you. If you want to flaunt your body for the WHOLE public to see, then do it, but then don’t whine when everyone doesn’t fawn over you.

The majority of pictures of Steve Grand “half-naked” are pretty old, other than the speedo pic that was taken recently. Queerty uses them EVERY time they post anything about Steve as sensational clickbait. Yeah, he’s hot, but to ONLY use those images of him is unfair. Steve is a great entertainer and musician, and a STRONG voice for equality in our community. First of all, he doesn’t need to be ashamed of the pictures and no one has the right to make him feel that way, BUT, he has far more pictures IN his clothes than out of them, and yet Queerty and other sources rarely use them. So you tell me, who is causing the problem. A) We are, because we respond to the clickbait B) Sites like Queerty are because they use the clickbait. Commenters here being negative about Steve and his “15 minutes” being over …. really? That’s all you have to offer about someone out there advocating for your rights, and doing a damn good job at it? Crawl under a rock. And shaming him or making him feel self-conscious over how he dresses or doesn’t dress as the case may be, is nothing short of bullying.

dear steve, not everybody thinks you’re a slut; keep up the good music and remember: living well is the best revenge.
Adam Van Dale
Oh please… Does he actually think that his looks/body didn’t get him where he is today? If he looked like me he wouldn’t have ever been given a second glance, let alone be invited to perform at gay clubs… He needs to capitalize on what’s making him famous
Krystoffer A Viau
OMFG! Him again? He’s asking for issues. He’s allowing himself to be photographed on purpose so he can bitch about it? Seriously dude, grow a set! Keep it up and you won’t have any fans left. Your music must be that horrible, so you allowed yourself to get those images taken and sure, they’ll float around the net for an eternity. IF this is all you’ll end up having, don’t bitch about it.
Ladbrook
In all honesty, he looks better in his thong than in street clothes.
Why this bothers him I have no idea. As for his Jonas remark, Nick gets a lot of beefcake coverage here on Queerty, and I’ve never read anywhere that he resents that.
The last time I checked, we still have Freedom of the Press, so if he doesn’t like what one site chooses to pull from his PUBLIC PAGE then he should consider NOT POSTING anymore R-rated snapshots of himself… and maybe get a better P.R. guy, too.
Will Moor
Now I feel guilt for finding him hot.
Regg Valencia

Ashleigh Boutelle
This is a very tricky situation, but ultimately, when you’re that hot, you either need to (unfortunately) deal with/accept the attention your looks get or be more careful how you expose yourself.

Steve, if you don’t want them posted, then don’t pose for them!

He’s not being a slut. But saying “he looks hot with his shirt off” is not slut-shaming. Honestly he’s lucky he’s getting any attention at all. If it weren’t for his instragram no-one would even know he existed, never mind that he is some kind of musician.
Steven Best
Most of these comments however (“if he doesn’t want to be called a slut then he shouldn’t dress like one”) are in fact slut-shaming. And nobody is calling him a slut anyway!
Spike
I wonder if he has ever Google image searched himself?
They all look pretty intentional. These 20somethings, one day they will wake up to find their entire lives have been shared on the internet and will have no one to blame but themselves.

Dear Steve,
It is your Grindr account and your lecherous ways that make you a slut. The pics do nothing more than to show it. Why not start acting like a reasonable adult and delete those prepubescent whore apps/site and try the real world for a change. Stop giving gay men a bad reputation.
Spike
@Krystoffer A Viau: Funny that he would cry ‘slut shaming’ . . . when in fact we have all been to pool parties and the guys that strip down to that style of swim suit, that leaves nothing to the imagination, are the first ones to get naked when the sun goes down and make out in the jacuzzi with multiple guys. Not saying that is a bad thing, esp if you are one of the guys he makes out with!
Alex Paris
T shirts were invented for steve.

I see his point but still think he’s making a mountain out of a mole hill tbh.
Larry Coles
Mr. Grand has a very valid point! However, Steve, if you’re going to post half-naked pictures of yourself (even if it’s only 1% of the time) then you have to live with the consequences of those pics being on social media. Furthermore, Nick Jonas, Zac Efron and even Bieber are constantly being shown without shirts! Yes, they may flaunt it more than you – but I rarely see pics of them with shirts on anymore! Either get used to it – or go away!
Phranc Azzhee

If he’s going to pose for the pictures that make him look hot and sexy and sleazy, he has no reason to complain. He posed for them to get people to know and remember him, he’s getting a lot of free publicity by people reposting them. I just wish Zac and Nic would pose for such racy pictures. I actually thought Steve Grand was a porn star after I saw a few of his pictures.

Did a lot of people notice that that was Rick Springfield playing the weird shrink / plastic surgeon on True Detective Season? Most young guys trying for fame know that they only have this tiny window of time in which to be young and objectified.

Steve who?
Seriously, I’m not being hunty but I don’t know who this guy is. He mentions himself in the same breath as Nick Jonas. Nick Jonas is a genuine music star, a TV and movie actor and has made available many hot pictures of himself for fan consumption. Nick Jonas’ fans appreciate them. I certainly do.
If Steve Grand (great stage name, BTW), wants to appeal to the southern, Christian, country music world, maybe he should stop posting half nekkid pictures of himself on social media sites. That’s his complaint, right?

Steve Grand has a great body. He should be able to walk the beach in a Speedo without some skinny, malnourished queens turning him into a spectacle.
Now, if he were to walk down Fifth Avenue in a Speedo, that would be another thing altogether. Then, he’d be making a spectacle of himself. Skinny, malnourished queens would have every right to point to him.

@James V Carroll: You certainly qualify for the “not conventionally attractive” part. However, if Steve is going to promote fugly artists, they at least ought to resemble a life form from Earth.
Leon Acord-Whiting
Moreover, its much to do about nothing, and I think he’s, again, trying to feed his need for constant publicity. He posed for the photos, he posted the photos, he can’t be surprised that they would be spread around. So, then, what better to keep people talking about you? Begin complaining about blogs using the very photos you posed for and posted. This guy has been PR hungry since the beginning. He’s playing true to form.
Derek Villanueva
Umm. Isn’t he biting the hand that feeds him?! Embrace it boy! The only “news” outlets covering you right now cause it ain’t news. I’m just saying…
Michael Martinez
Queerty is a gay tabloid. That’s what you do. You post click bait articles with scantily clad men as click bait. But Steve Grand is right about one thing, you make your money off of click bait. There’s no shame in that, but there is also no shame in any person dressing as they please without being called out about what they wear. To be honest its a situation of the pot being upset about the kettle calling it black. If you at Queerty don;t like that he had an honest human response to your carrying on about the size of his swimming attire like a virgin nun, perhaps you should be doing a little house cleaning of your listicles that pose as “journalism”, many of which feature nearly naked men with click thrus to “NSFW” naked pics. If you start posting actual news along with your headlines, you may be taken a little more seriously. But Steve Grand, has an actual talent, so his record sales indicate and despite your decision to ignore that. So in a whine fight, he’s going to win every time.

TomMc
@TomMc: @TomMc: Kidding. Sorry for that, my kinda snarky comment, there above.
So then, listen Steve Grand… People love your smile, and your songs, etc. The fact that Queerty posts so many stories about you, and gets so many replies to them when they do, only indicates but a fraction of how much so.
Please don’t fault Queerty for posting stories (salacious or otherwise) about one of the most impressive non-straight artists who’s emerged within the past few years?
Douglas E Stever-Akesson
Who the hell is he?
imperator
He has to “live with the consequences” of posing for pictures– some underwear/nude pictures when he was younger, and some pictures in a speedo more recently– and sharing them online like *every* motherfucker constantly over-shares everything nowadays? And the natural “consequences” of that are what, exactly? That everything he is and does and everything he wants gets negated and he’s reduced, as a person, to *only* “that slut who shows off his body for attention?” And he gets mocked and denounced when he speaks up for himself and says he doesn’t appreciate the one-note depiction?
Wow, are some of you assholes ever proving his point.
He’s an aspiring musician, he’s done some public advocacy, and in the course of living his life like a normal person, he posts pictures of his goings-on online; and he’s saying that it’s lazy and exploitative when the only thing that really gets any ‘coverage’ is the
one picture out of dozens where he’s got most of his clothes off. And he’s right. Lots of us might like the view, and sure, he’s the one sharing his pictures, but it’s entirely legit to scrutinize what the curators of a third-party site like this one chooses to feature and promote in order to draw attention to itself.
moldisdelicious
i agree with him. time for us gay men to treat each other as well as other men with some respect as human beings instead of tools for sexual gratification. also dudes need to stop judging folks with their eyes as well because there’s always folks ready to go like “that guy is a good person” when they really mean “that guy is hot so that means that he’s a good person”. folks want respect from the world around them but don’t respect themselves and their peers.

The only ones who think Steve Grand is a slut are the ones who are bitter and jealous cause they can’t seem to look as good in a speedo because they are not able to fill out the front like he does.
The rest of us love seeing him wear as little clothing as possible. If you got it flaunt it and he has it for sure.

Missy Grand throws a hissy fit about Queerty having a no-clothes-is-better-than-clothes pic policy? I mean, has anyone ever seen a story here about Ricky Martin where he’s wearing clothes in the accompanying pic? It’s Queerty, you fools.

Steve Grand can’t win either way. Even if he has no r-rated pics online, people are still going to drool and talk about how hot he is. “The thirst is real” is just a polite way of saying most men are pigs; and in some ways gay men are even worse. On the other hand, that’s just how the pop music industry is these days… if one isn’t attractive, one won’t get noticed no matter how talented.
@meghanada: Best comment of the day!

I think it’s dubious that just 3 months prior Davey Wavey and Mr. Grand posted a shirtless video about being objectified. The tone of the video seems sarcastic. It is a sad time when the media has so much power to represent people in the ONLY way they see fit! I have been following you for several years and am proud of your accomplishments and look forward to seeing you develop as an artist! Know there are plenty of your fans out here that love and support you (even if you have never met us).
Large Marge
I really love the part where he throws Nick Jonas and Zac Efron under the bus. “Those are the REAL SLUTS”. Classy.
“Nick Jonas and Zac Efron flaunt their bodies WAY more than I do and are not treated this way.”
Ummm, yeah, they do get treated exactly the same because we like to see half naked men… they just embrace it where you are trying to shun it when that is what is responsibly for your so-called ‘career’.
Kthanxbye.
Caeb Colravy
Being a “slut” has nothing to do with what you are wearing. It has to do with your sex practices. And whether he is or isn’t a “slut” is nobody else’s damn business. There’s nothing wrong with consenting adults having a lot sex.
Topher Duerkes
It is not slut shaming, just to repost his half naked pics, and ogle him. Now, you cannot be a national star and then be half naked anywhere and not expect peeps to put your pic up everywhere showing your rather nice assets. If you choose to live in the limelight, you also choose that aloy of your privacy gets blown away. it was his choice, so..the end result…was his choice, too. Leave the clothes on or take them off in some more remote area. Americans are always star struck, even more so when they are half naked. And now to remove his music from my ipod.
Giancarlo85
He’s alright. But he needs to get over it and get over himself. Why even bother writing a letter to this site? He’s acting immature and comlpetely overreacting. And then he went after Nick Jonas and Zac Efron (both of which are way more popular than he is)… lol… seems a bit desperate.
Does this guy even have an album out?
hkgjefe1
I”m not sure who this guy is, but his post is such a stomach-turner. Go away, pretty boy – whoever you are.
junesxing
I respect Steve for posting this article publicly, and think he made some good points. I also respect Queerty for their honest and respectful response. Both parties here showed thought and respect for each other. Grats to both.
meghanada
@Giancarlo85: Because the gay media is everything he has to give exposure to his work, and all it cares about is his bulges. Agree with him or not, it’s normal for someone with artistic ambitions to want people to pay attention to his work sometimes, and his frustration in this respect doesn’t deserve as response all the bile from the simultaneously horny and abusive queens here.
DMRX
Thank you, Queerty, for going the right direction in your response. It was the noble thing to do.
tford216
I find it funny that everyone in the comments section is so obtuse. Steve Grand wants to make it in country music or heck even pop. The only way to do that is to get straight women to buy into his image. Straight women drive sales of most music. He will not do well if he is scene as a twink in a speedo. Women don’t go gaga for playgirl. They want a man who is manly or if gay at least seems asexual and/or respectful of women…think Luther, Sam Smith, ect. Steve Grand throwing his crotch in the face of everyone when everyone knows he is in to guys is not going to do it. He is not an actor where women can separate his private life from his public life. Additionally, even Nick Jonas is only going to go so far. It’s one thing to respect your gay fans it is another to not seem interested in your straight female ones.
mastik8
Who’s his PR person? Wasn’t this an opportunity to brag rather than complain? Also, he said Slut Shaming like it’s a bad thing. Oy.
SonOfKings
He does have a point. His presentation in gay media has been unbalanced. But he is only making things worse for himself by going on a public rant and playing the victim card. When legendary disco queen Donna Summer was plagued by sexually provocative imagery of her propagated in the press, she went on a quiet campaign to change/broaden her public image. Donna hired the most prestigious photographers to shoot promotional photo albums displaying her in elegant, sophisticated gowns. Soon the old erotic, risque photos dropped from view. Better to get even than to get mad, and above all, no public rants.
Celtic
Well, smack me stupid but I had never even heard of Steve Grand until all this grand-standing burst out of the queer universe. This boy has LOTS of internalized anxieties. Such a rant for a not so hot body. He needs therapy, bad. “Ex-gay therapy”? REALLY? That is the biggest hoax in the universe. Well, Mr. Not-so-Grand, go cry on your mommy’s lap. Suck your thumb and whine a bit more.
geoespar
He can’t be that stupid. If you’re going to take pictures of yourself, post it, in swimwear that in all reality is a thong, revealing his dick and big balls, what does this clown expect from members of the Gay Community, and girls, but the desire to see. I don’t know what his mental issues are, but he should see a psychiatrist and vent his problems there.
Thor2015
Okay a few things here:
1) this coming from a guy who’s version of the ice bucket challenge was jumping in a lake NAKED!!! Did he have to be naked?
2) the easiest way for him to “get what he wants” stop posting anything shirtless, and let whats out there die off and just shut up and focus on the music.
3) stop associating himself with classless gay porn stars married boyfriends.
stonrdude
Maybe he should not have let that picture be taken. Maybe not even worn the speedo. Even Nick Jonas has not shown off his junk like that. If you don’t want it shown off, don’t flaunt it. I think Nick has done a good job selling his music to the gay community and we like it and we buy it. We like Steve and we buy his music too.
Black Pegasus
Aww, the poor White Privileged Gay Male doesn’t want to be “objectified ” for his beauty, youth and stardom.
Bitch please!
** rolls eyes **
mikelphx
Does he really think he would of gotten this far without taking his clothes off? Get over yourself. We have bigger issues than to care about your new image.
Butch Royall
Just an idea that might work for Mr. Grand. Stop taking half nude pictures.
moldisdelicious
@Xzamilio:
it can be done but obviously, folks don’t want to do it. they think it’s perfectly acceptable to treat their gay peers and themselves like trash BUT then want the rest of the world to respect them and shower them with flowers. folks try to throw in the tolerate their bullshit along with their sexual orientation when someone’s personal behavior and attitude towards people is NOT connected to their sexual orientation.
it’s hilarious because when the homophobes come around calling those same folks doing that behavior, sex crazed, sexual deviants, sexual predators, and trying to force themselves onto guys without them wanting that type of attention, they’re the ones trying to get all educational about what being gay is. they’re the victim. yet when they’re around their fellow gay peers, they do bullshit to them. smh.
fredo777
@meghanada: Spot-on!
To say that he shouldn’t ever post half-dressed pics if he doesn’t *only* want that focused on or to harp on what he did as a 19 year old kid makes most of you look worse than it does Steve. Judgmental and stupid, playing right into what Steve said you would do. I for one have gained more respect for the guy standing up for himself + this doesn’t make him a hypocrite just because some of you can’t separate “sometimes” from always or mostly. In fact, some of your catty responses are exactly what has come to be known as “slut shaming”, right down to the Grindr mention. #GirlBye
fredo777
@stonrdude: Yes, Nick Jonas has taken a Marky Mark inspired photo in Calvin Kleins, grabbing his junk.
Luckychico
I can see where Steve Is coming from and we should not be critical or criticize….however 1. your first music video features gay porn star, 2. Your posing showing off your physic your butt posing all wet 3.your playing a real thirsty stocker I’m going to steal your boyfriend guy, so clearly Steve knew what he was doing. Because sex sells and your trying to sell your music and imaget to gay men and what would get social medias attention. Can’t slut shame you unles you feel bad for being a slut but it worked for Madonna and she owned it gave no f*cks. Steve that red speedo was nice and good for you on wearing it, and no one can make you feel bad about wearing it unless you feel bad about wearing it….you had to have known any picture taken would end up in social media? This reminds me of Kim Kardashian not wanting to be objectified but still objectifying herself. Sex sales and your catering to a bunch of horny gays, if now your trying to sell to straight people and trying not to make them uncomfortable with your sexuality then I suggest you stop taking provocative pictures or choose more sexy hetero friendly swimwear like a speedo not made by AC? Your a handsome guy and I can see women also interested in you. You can take pictures like Tim Mcgraw who does sexy hetero country. Steve you need a good team behind you….no pun intended…..to help your career expand your broadened horizons. But selling sexy to gays seems to be working fine for Nick Jonas, Steve you have to be unapologetic Take it in stride and not be bothered and have a good head on your shoulders unless your having regrets of coming out as a gay artist and now country music will not take you seriously and wish you have presented your self as a straight artist first to get into the mainstream music world a la Ricky Martin?
adrianjurado310
Queerty,
Do whatever the hell you want.

lykeitiz
Leave Queerty Aloooooone!!! They absolutely DO objectify Nick Jonas & Zac Efron in the same way!
But seriously, even when he’s dressed, does he own a shirt or a pair of pants that aren’t EXTREMELY form-fitting?? Not complaining……just observing.
Derek Williams
Great artist with to-die-for looks, no matter what he wears (or doesn’t wear), and a fantastic role model for LGBT kids. However, for them to be able to adopt him, and for the industry to do likewise, he needs to be seen with his clothes on most of the time. He is a musician, not a pornstar, and that is not said with anything against pornstars nor any intention implicitly to criticise them. These are different worlds. I do wish Steve Grand all the very best.
corey
He presented himself as a sex symbol by being a model prior to becoming famous, and, he would never have become famous so easily if he weren’t so hot. He needs to accept this fact and not give a hoot, he is in the public eye, he made that choice. Media does the same to all “stars” whether male or female, this is party of American culture!
aidanbh
I am with Grand on this one. Opponents are typically resentful of someone else’s success and like to pull people down just for the sake of it. A presumption is made (by people like Corey) that if an attractive person is successful, then they have “presented themselves as a sex symbol”. In other words, attractive people are expected to make themselves ugly just to avoid such a putdown. So, the audience is divided into three groups: 1) I think that he is hot and want more; 2) I think that he is hot, but should be left alone; and 3) I am just bitter, old, ugly tart myself and resent him. Yet all of these still avoid the salient issue… does the media cheapen itself by promoting the salacious over the substantial? Of course Grand has courted the media. In any other area of life we would not be discussing whether promotion is an acceptable part of the capitalist process. But if queerty.com really were interested in what is best for the gay community, it would realise that it has a moral obligation to spend at least as much time promoting the worthiness of LGBT people as decent and respectable people in our own right BEYOND the mere shallowness of our looks.
Atomicrob
The star doth protest too much. Ridiculous letter.
Atomicrob
@Black Pegasus: Agreed! Any PR is good PR. When it stops, he can complain.
tford216
@Derek Williams: He is no more a fantastic role model than Ciara (you probably don’t know her). But she is a woman with beauty and minimal talent. She is unable to break through to certain level because of that minimal talent so she sometimes goes the Beyonce (no clothing route). For some reason (lack of talent) that still isn’t working for her. Steve Grand wants to be super successful and to do this he needs straight females. He will probably never get straight (not closeted bi or gay guys) guys on his side. But girls aren’t into the gay guys who look like twinks. Well girls usually are when they are in their teens but after a while they want a man who looks like a man and speedos aren’t manly. Your speedo competing with her bikiini bottom is not cute.
Derek Williams
@tford216: Well if you really Grand isn’t a good role model, then I’m afraid we will have to agree to disagree.
tford216
@Derek Williams: Don’t worry we do. Just because he is gay and not a closet case doesn’t make him a role model. Ciara is a black woman in a world where that ain’t easy but that does not it self equal fantastic role model
Derek Williams
@tford216: Tim Cook is another role model. So what? Not all role models have to be the same, shirt on or shirt off. Everyone who is openly gay is watched as an example of how gay people are and are a de facto role model, whether they wish to be or not.
Any public figure who self identifies as a member of a minority is identified by the public with that minority. You can say all you like that Grand is not a role model, and that he isn’t a good role model, but that is only your opinion. As I said, my opinion is different to yours – I think he is a good role model, in a different way to Tim Cook, but still a role model, and so I can only repeat, we will have to agree to disagree.
tford216
@Derek Williams: Tim Cook is a role model and I haven’t seen him without his shirt once.
fredo777
@tford216: What the hell are you talking about? Ciara is talented. For one thing, she is a great dancer.
tford216
@fredo777: My bad I was trying to compare him to someone is marginally talented (like he is) and very attractive. I do love me some Ciara dancing in Body Party.
fredo777
@fredo777: I believe the name you’re looking for is Enrique Iglesias, Jr.

Steve,
Need I tell you that all men are visual. I can understand your frustration, however you’re in a profession that put’s you in the spot light. You talk about not being rich / powerful. You are, just by your mere presence. You love music and want to produce music. It’s your choice. One of the pit falls in celebrity is exposure.
You’re one hot sexy man, but much more than that. I read about your trouble of depression and not wanting to get out of bed. That’s a real personal concern. You are a person first, entertainer second.
I think you need to find a comfortable mix of music / and crotch shots that is in combination of keeping your name in lights. You need both. Just be the only thing that you can be…you. I appreciate the fact that you spoke up. Yes, our community is phony in so many ways. Being Gay is not a couple of guys walking at Gay Pride in jock straps. That does more harm than good for our community. Being Gay is a feeling inside. You can’t put your insides on a flag pole and fly them. You have to put your inside feelings in your actions and every day life of who you are.
I’ve stopped subscribing to Gay magazines because they don’t have any articles of substance. It’s camp and more camp. We are so much more and our community is missing so many real opportunities to reach out to so many struggling with their feelings.
Daniel-Reader
Granted that Queerty isn’t, say, The New Yorker, but I don’t recall Queerty ever even mentioning Steve Grand’s sex life… ever. So is he calling himself a slut or what? That’s what it seems like. Very strange, but a 25 y/o should be having fun – safe fun – yet fun none-the-less.
Sinakhone
Steve – I admire your courage for speaking up and appreciate all of you. Your music, your looks, your activism, your charity, your tenacity and your creativity. Take it with a grain of salt. Use it to your advantage and turn lemons into lemonade. Write a song about this experience. Thank the gay press for handing you this gift of visibility. It’s a gift that is just disguised that’s all. When we change how we look at a thing the very thing we look at changes. I know that sounds cliched but true. You’re not a victim. You’re a willing participant in this game. There’s a Buddhist saying that because we live in this world we should practice “joyful participation in the sorrows of the world.” Your heart is in the right place. You do so much good for those that are less fortunate. Keep making your art. Turn your troubles into your masterpieces. I will contact you personally about a potential opportunity to collaborate. I love, respect and admire you!
Yours in solidarity,

Ok if any one of us who has been active online for the past few years suddenly had a bit of fame… well.. I am SURE if not POSITIVE that there are a number of things in your past you’d delete or have done differently. It’s probably quite jarring, even if you were warned when those “skeletons in your closet” (for lack of a better term) come back to haunt you. It IS sad that he takes it personally, but then, remember high school… weren’t your creative friends the most sensitive? and while he is doing the right thing by his fans/followers showing his more normal life, fun times.. combined with all the other images, and being a sensitive guy, well.. it is a publicity issue. but not one that is necessarily bad
anyhoo, LEAVE STEVE ALONE!

@meghanada: What artistic ambitions? He doesn’t have much of that at all. Maybe he should take a lesson from Mick Jagger or Madonna. Sex appeal sells.
tompink3
Some people seem to think Steve Grand goes around posting his nude pictures everywhere himself. This is the internet, folks, with millions of users that share pics that highlight beauty, clothed or nude. Whenever we see an informational article about Steve, some readers with the mentality of a 13 year old will post pics of when he modeled in swimsuits and underwear. Then come comments from all the prissy prudes, who always WILL FIND something to bitch about, since they’re miserable with themselves and probably haven’t been to a nudist beach before and learned to be calm with naked humans walking by. I’m disappointed with the gay community for being so bitchy and nasty about this. But like they say in Spanish: “Grita cuando lo meten y lloran cuando lo sacan. (They scream when you put it in and cry when you take it out!) Thanks Queerty for your thoughtful response to Steve and posting your favorite clothed pictures of him. but don’t stoop to the level of a gay “National Enquirer”. He’s really a great musician with a truly sweet heart. I know he is strong because he risks making himself vulnerable in what he says. But then when chatterboxes and church ladies get started, twist his words, and lay false blame (Like saying that Steve himself keeps postin gis old bikini pics) or total lies (Like that Kevin guy that kept writing that Steve approved of gay-conversion therapy. He seemed to be trying for a position on Fox News or for some cheap gossip rags.) I hope to see intelligent and sensitive treatment of gay artists, musicians, and rising stars by the gay press and websites.

@Black Pegasus: Amen!

So judgmental. Big freaking deal that he posed for pics way back when. I’m sure he had bills to pay just like the rest of us. Now he’s in a different place in his life. Sad that so many just can’t seem to be happy for him.

fredo777
@tricky ricky: Well, this post already has a couple hundred comments on it, so obviously your assessment that he’s not “relevant” is complete bullshit. Keep it movin’, sista.
Doughosier
He should be proud to have a body like that! Use what you’ve got to get what you want. He also needs to find great songs if he wants to be taken seriously as a singer but I, for one, love him wearing as few clothes as possible.
Giancarlo85
@fredo777: Um, he’s a C list celebrity. If you could even call him a celebrity. He’s only “relevant” on this site.
fredo777
@Giancarlo85: Aside from that being completely besides the point of the original topic, calling someone a “has been” or irrelevant is just a lazy, dismissive argument. Furthermore, in this case, Grand is right on the money about how some catty internet commenters will react whenever you have a backbone + make a valid, critical point about how you’re being portrayed.
Giancarlo85
@fredo777: I didn’t call him a “has been”. That would imply he was popular at one point in time. He wasn’t ever popular and has never had a major release. Nor has he done much with his career. How is it “lazy and dismissive”? I’m just stating the fact. Grand isn’t so grand when it comes to career wise. If he was he wouldn’t have even responded to this site. Why would he give this site attention if he was so busy? I think he’s probably on the internet too much.
fredo777
@Giancarlo85: The has been/’never was been’ remark was attributed to another user, whom I was responding to when you jumped into the fray. As for the other stuff, he’s still more popular than the critics here who are sniping at his career. Which, again, is not the point of the article or Steve’s response.
Giancarlo85
@fredo777: His response itself was immature and shows someone who isn’t secure with his own so called “success”. He isn’t popular… very few people even know who he is. And his response to this website will hinder his career.
fredo777
@Giancarlo85: He isn’t popular by what standards? A-Listers like Beyonce, Taylor Swift, etc? Of course not. He’s a recently-debuted indie gay country artist. He has room for more career breaks. Fun facts, though: He’s got about 175K Facebook fans, nearly 70K on Instagram — even accounting for the typical percentage of fake/spam followers that most social accounts have, those are decent numbers — was featured in Out’s Out100, covered Instinct, + got his debut album fully backed by fan support via crowdfunding on Kickstarter. He might be a “C-lister”, but he’s certainly not unpopular. Besides which, that whole “nobody likes/knows you” angle is very childish/’Mean Girls’ in itself.
Giancarlo85
@fredo777: You are kidding right? Facebook and instagram are not indicators of popularity. And those numbers aren’t impressive. I know so called “YouTube” stars with more followers than that. Steve sings a genre of music which doesn’t appeal to most in the community and tries to appeal to right wing Christians. If he ever wants to be more popular he needs to sing more mainstream music.
Crowdfunding lol? What happened? He couldn’t land a decent contract? Seems like record labels don’t even think he will sell. And I am pretty sure his album sales were dismal. Asides from that he really is mediocre talent wise. He relies solely on his looks… And is now complaining about that.
fredo777

Did Steve Grand just kind of gay bash Queerty and himself? Would he have posted this message to a “straight” web site?
Here is what I heard in Steve Grand’s comments:
“Queerty, you gay agenda web site, should stop posting my pictures – that I posed for – on your gay web site that remind people that I am gay. Because, it is really hard out here for me, but not Adam Lambert.
“Just because I came out does not mean that I am professionally and socially comfortable being identified as being gay.
“Yes, sexy pictures from James Franco and Nick Jonas have no impact on them, but the fan base I am desperately, foolishly trying to attract really cares about me being openly gay and I just can’t have you messing that up for me. My pictures are only for web sites like People magazine that make me seem less gay. Those other classy web sites don’t need clicks to make their money, like you do.
“I am not a slut. James Franco is a slut. Why don’t you be fair and post some pictures of James Franco for a change?
“Being the anal retentive MAN I am, I have actually clocked each picture I posted and really only 1% of them are truly hot. You are not even posting the really hot ones. So please stop supporting me and introducing me to people who would have never heard of me if they had not seen me on the Queerty web site. A poor, struggling, gay, country artist can only handle so much free publicity.
“By the way, you and only you are responsible for my lack of financial and commercial success. The amount of time I spend working out, vacationing, and taking shirtless pictures has nothing to do with it.
“It is really hard out here being hot, young, white, hot, male, gay, hot, and being able to effectively display my MAN-ly package in a Speedo. The criticism never ends. I bet Iggy Azalea gets less criticism than I do.
“Gay web sites like yours make it harder for me. Well, that is what my new manager told me.
“The Queer media make me so mad.
“Darn it, Girl!”
shlevine
@Superficially.Me: Superficially.Me: Do you know how to read? Do you know how to process thoughts, or so you simply spew vomit-laced venom before your cerebellum can catch up?
Steve Grand in no–repeat NO–way referenced James Franco or Adam Lambert. Nor did he ever indicate any discomfort with his homosexuality. To the contrary, his whole album, not to mention dozens of interviews, show that he is an out, PROUD gay man, the first to use specific pronouns in his music. In so doing, he became–unwittingly or intentionally–a role model for scared and lonely gay youth trying to find their way. Where on earth did you make up that shit about wanting to be in a mainstream magazine (People) or ever be perceived as “less gay”? He certainly didn’t blame Queerty or anyone else for his financial success or lack thereof.
Get a life.
Superficially.Me
@shlevine: Bless the poor little children. I see you missed a reading comprehension class in school.

@fredo777: No, I am just not a fan boy.
You wrote how you interpreted my post.
I wrote how I interpreted Steve’s post.
Sounds fair to me.
fredo777
@Giancarlo85: You really are the epitome of what people have come to expect from the so-called ‘community’, venomously trying to drag a young gay guy more than some of the ‘others’ are even doing. His social media numbers, as I said, are decent: they are not stellar, but they certainly aren’t mediocre. So, you know others with higher numbers? Well, obviously. Not being the head cheerleader doesn’t mean you aren’t also popular (even if slightly less so than others). Do you know how many talented artists there are who went the indie route because they didn’t get a deal? Also, Kickstarter projects (like social media) are very much part of today’s currency. It’s not all glossy magazines or record deals anymore. Successfully backed crowdfunding campaigns and social account numbers are, indeed, indicators of popularity, much like digital single downloads are considered in addition to traditional album sales. I’m done here.

August 1 at 9:21am ·
This is not a “message to my haters”, but a message for those at all interested in what I have to say about me.
I have carved out a unique path for myself as an artist/performer. My album debuted at #1 on the iTunes and Billboard Comedy charts last April. I’ve performed on National TV & in front of live audiences all over the world.
I usually let things like this pass without speaking up about it. For two years I’ve trudged through it all with a smile, so hopefully I’ll get a pass for speaking up on my behalf at this time. It would be nice if the shirtless photos I post got a fraction of the press I get for my work as a writer and a comedian.
For decades I have FOUGHT to be taken frivolously by the media, to be seen as a silly hunk of man-candy with a disposable career that gives them an excuse to pay copious attention to my sweet, meaty body, but no, the press continues to just treat me as a “forceful, authoritative comic persona” (Onion AV Club) or “Swaggeringly opinionated and sweetly vulnerable… candidate for best special of the year.” (New York Times)
Why can no one see me for the simple, uncomplicated underwear model *I* know myself to be.
Of course, despite the many laudatory reviews of my stand-up album, the GAY press has actually had almost nothing to say about it, because unlike some other artists, I don’t have a ridiculous body to recommend myself. I will, however, continue my fight to be treated as someone whose greatest skill is looking good in underwear.
My album “Effable” is available on iTunes and Amazon and features many revealing pictures of me.
notevenwrong
Well, country music is certainly not a growth industry with the yuppy gay audience, and now apparently taking advantage of looks is also off the table. What else has he got?
notevenwrong
@EbonyOnly: “I’ve stopped subscribing to Gay magazines because they don’t have any articles of substance. It’s camp and more camp.”
If only they still had Camp, which is actually a by now venerable esthetic tradition, and probably isn’t what you think it is (see “Notes on Camp,” by Susan Sontag, 1964). I’ve stopped gay magazines because they have no journalism and they certainly have no Camp; instead, they only have marketing targeted at yuppie white men.

He’s not talented. He relies on his looks and now he’s getting pissy because people are feeding into what he wanted.

Unfortunately, there are those who would use this cloak, not merely to express an opinion, but rather to unleash an uninhibited torrent of hatred and abuse.
