The University of Kansas has a new course offering called “Angry White Male Studies” and it has at least one straight white male lawmaker totally up in arms.
“Instead of a course to unite people and empower women, KU has decided to offer a class that divides the student population and could pose a Title IX violation by creating a hostile campus environment based on gender,” Rep. Ron Estes tweeted this week.

It should come as no surprise that Estes, a Republican and staunch Trump supporter, is a long-time defender of “religious liberty” laws and has been endorsed by the antigay Family Research Council.
According to the official course description on the university’s website, the class will take an academic look at the emotional states of straight white men from the 1950s through today:
This course charts the rise of the ‘angry white male’ in America and Britain since the 1950s, exploring the deeper sources of this emotional state while evaluating recent manifestations of male anger.
Employing interdisciplinary perspectives, this course examines how both dominant and subordinate masculinities are represented and experienced in cultures undergoing periods of rapid change connected to modernity as well as to rights-based movements of women, people of color, homosexuals, and trans individuals.
Sounds super interesting to us!
The three-hour course will be offered in the fall and is being led by humanities instructor Christopher Forth, who is also a white man.

Sounds fascinating, can we also have a class called angry straight black or brown or yellow male?
Don’t forget about Angry Black Woman Who Works as Check-Out Gurl
Translation: The anti-LGBT troll account is defending a politician that seeks to harm LGBT people AND supports an organization that was one of the groups funneling money to groups in Uganda trying to murder us.
Queerty, at what point does it become obvious that a troll account is only here to advocate for bigotry and hate against us? This account is defending someone who supports the Family Research Council, a hate group that seeks LGBTs imprisonment or, as they did in Uganda, our deaths.
@iamru2 Do you charge extra for anal?
@DCguy – Why do you have white and straight people so much? You are quite the bigot.
This course is what’s wrong with Academia. And I work in it.
How about a course on how judicial courts, laws, and deregulations are impacting democracy and social equity.
How about we just teach college students that people who disagree with them are not (a) traitors; (b) trolls; (c) haters.
How about a class on STFU with a concentration in Minding Your Own Business?
Will there also be a course on the history of the “Uppity Black Woman” and the “Over-dramatic Gay Male”?
Wow, this post went from zero to racist in 0.001 seconds flat.
Racists see racism everywhere!
The only racism I see here is the course itself.
Maybe – just maybe – this course will give a minute to consider actual reasons why white males might be angry. Fewer good jobs. The shrinking middle class. Lack of support for families, veterans, the poor.
There are some incorrect perceptions out there. But a lot of white men ARE being squeezed. The idea that each generation will do better than the one before is in real danger.
Maybe they should talk to the superrich white men who are squeezing every last dime out of them and everyone else except their superrich, private equity, elite rentier and global corporate leader pals! They’re laughing all the way to the bank, and just got even more obscenely rich under the grotesque GOP-Drumpf tax giveaways to billionaires and corporations that passed a few years ago! But hey, they put him in office, so that anger might be a bit misplaced.
Wrong on many counts. There is a reason why many of the super rich backed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
The middle class gets squeezed by the terrible policies implemented in this country from the past 4 Presidents and outrageous taxation. Everything we do is taxed but that little of that tax money gets used for any real benefits. It lines the pockets of politicians or gets handed out as giveaways to the people in this country who can work but refuse to so that those politicians can get their votes.
Past Presidents refused to stand up to other nations and allowed for jobs to continually get shipped overseas by letting them milk us. Current politicians are even trying more of the same by advocating for no borders, more taxes on everything you do, and more reliance on government programs.
The tax cuts were not a “giveaway”. That statement shows you know very little about taxation. Allowing Americans to keep more of their income isn’t a “giveaway”. The super mega rich individuals in this country would lower their tax burdens no matter what tax policy was implemented. The tax cuts helped small businesses and the American worker but there is still more work to be done.
But your diverging from the topic of this blog post to bash Trump. Do you think this course is racist?
Kangol would rather it be black men who do those things!
@iamru2, as usual, you are wrong. I don’t want ANY rich men to be extracting every dime they can from the general society and benefitting themselves at the expense of everyone else. A social democratic system would be far preferable to the mess of an economy and political system that we currently have. So nope, I’m not a racist or supremacist like you.
Then why did you only point out the white man? Sometimes you come off as very level headed and make some good points but then other times you seem to have this prejudice against white men!
@truthseeker Tell us…what flavor is Trump’s taint today? Ass or piss? Do you charge him extra for anal or is it a courtesy?
This situation is right out of the right wing playbook.
Find some teacher or some irrelevant course somewhere, and fake massive outrage about it. I,E, Please ignore their trying to pass laws against LGBTs, kids in cages at the boarder, schools that won’t teach proper science, or a Tax law that allows companies to write off wages paid to overseas non-American workers and rewards billionaires for hiding money in offshore accounts…..but yes, focus all of your attention on one non-required volunteer elective at a school in Kansas.
You are delusional if you believe the outrage over this nonsense is limited to “right wingers.”
He doesn’t have the intellect to reason!
