Straight white male lawmaker furious over college course about angry straight white males

Angry white man

The University of Kansas has a new course offering called “Angry White Male Studies” and it has at least one straight white male lawmaker totally up in arms.

“Instead of a course to unite people and empower women, KU has decided to offer a class that divides the student population and could pose a Title IX violation by creating a hostile campus environment based on gender,” Rep. Ron Estes tweeted this week.

It should come as no surprise that Estes, a Republican and staunch Trump supporter, is a long-time defender of “religious liberty” laws and has been endorsed by the antigay Family Research Council.

According to the official course description on the university’s website, the class will take an academic look at the emotional states of straight white men from the 1950s through today:

This course charts the rise of the ‘angry white male’ in America and Britain since the 1950s, exploring the deeper sources of this emotional state while evaluating recent manifestations of male anger.

Employing interdisciplinary perspectives, this course examines how both dominant and subordinate masculinities are represented and experienced in cultures undergoing periods of rapid change connected to modernity as well as to rights-based movements of women, people of color, homosexuals, and trans individuals.

Sounds super interesting to us!

The three-hour course will be offered in the fall and is being led by humanities instructor Christopher Forth, who is also a white man.
