Tasmania is completing its goal of luring foreign gays to the Australian state with a purposeful campaign that includes recognizing foreign same-sex marriages, a move that just made its way through the Upper House, even if the country refuses to let its own citizens marry under the Marriage Act.

So Australians have to fly to Canada to get married? Something is definitely wrong here. They better get a tax break on the airfare and hotel.
John (CA)
@Hannah: That is absolutely right.
Tasmanian gay and lesbian couples can only get married in common law countries that allow same-sex marriage. Which, for the moment, means Canada or South Africa. So much for wide-ranging honeymoon plans.
Civil law countries require a certificate of no impediment to marriage. And Prime Minister Julia Gillard has made it clear she has no intention of issuing such certificates to homosexuals. This Labor government has been absolutely dismal when it comes to equality. Of course, the Coalition isn’t any better.
