One of the most loathsome presidential candidates in recent memory just got even more icky, because Ted Cruz‘s Michigan legislative co-chair wants to ban homosexuality.
The reporters over at ThinkProgress unearthed some pretty shocking remarks from a Cruz staffer in Michigan. In a 2011 interview, Michigan’s Ted Cruz legislative co-chair Rep. had the following to say when asked if he believed in criminalizing homosexuality:
“The short answer to your question is yes, we believe that states should be free to regulate and prohibit behavior that’s a violation of community standards and a proven threat to public health and safety — including, as most of the United States did throughout its history, homosexual behavior.”
Ted Cruz’s desperate courting of antigay evangelicals seems to be paying off. His recent wins in Kansas and Maine have given him more momentum than he’s seen in months, so now seems to be the perfect time to go all-in on the gay hatred.
Even more infuriating? This isn’t the first (or second or third) time Glenn freely expressed deeply homophobic and transphobic views. ThinkProgress has a rundown:
Back in 2012, when Mt. Pleasant, Michigan was considering an ordinance designed to prohibit discrimination in housing, public accommodations, and employment, Glenn wrote an email to every city commissioner urging themto “not to even consider adopting such a discriminatory and volatile proposal which is clearly a solution in search of a non-existent problem, intended only to advance homosexual activists’ drive to have homosexual behavior and cross-dressing defined by law and endorsed by city government as the moral, social, and legal equivalents of immutable characteristics such as race, ethnic background, and sex.”
Last year, Glenn spoke out against a Planet Fitness policy that resulted in a Midland, Michigan woman having her membership cancelled after she spent several days complaining about a transgender woman she saw using the bathroom at her gym.
“Planet Fitness obviously should rethink its anti-woman, anti-reality policy,” Glenn said. “If they don’t, they shouldn’t be surprised in a conservative family-friendly community such as Midland if they lose more female members.”
According to the polls, Cruz is currently trailing Donald Trump by about 13 points in Michigan. However, don’t jump for joy just yet — we all know Trump has problems of his own when it comes to the gays.
The good news? Polls show both Democratic candidates creaming Trump at the ballot box. Let’s hope November 8th proves them right.

I still don’t even know what the hell this even means?? Castration, death, you can’t “ban” it anymore than you can ban skin color …..wtf??
GC1985
This is what we will get if Sanders is the candidate. He will lose the general election. Michigan itself was an aberration and Hillary will still win the nomination. She still ended on a net positive with delegates (+30 last night over Sanders). Sanders will end up losing the general election, so this is why I support Hillary. Sanders doesn’t have the tenacity to stand up to Republicans.
Bradley Phillip
Cruz a more scary then Trump
William Hitt
What is this? White straight supremisy?is he gona ban blacks too? What happened to all man created equal? Martin Luther king would role over in his grave.

ANY Republican candidate is more dangerous than any Democratic candidate. Trump and Cruz just happen to be by far the two worst.

Cruz is such a closet case!
Bob LaBlah
What this headline should have said was “Trump crushes Cruz in Michigan and Rubio is clearly out of the picture” than the mundane title that was used. What was chosen coincides with what and why they say the things they say about gays.
Who give a flying fuck about what this obvious nobody thinks about gays? The guy is a cochair, not the chairman. Come on people, lets show some intellect here and start talking more about what HAS happened, a candidate (Trump) who has clearly harnessed the disgust of the masses and turned it into a movement. Only a fool can’t see the importance of what is going on. This is utter foolishness.
1EqualityUSA
he “turned it into a movement” alright.
GC1985
@Bob LaBlah: Which is why he captured just 36% of Republicans in that state. You are the one living in fantasy. You think that homophobe Trump, which is disliked by 2/3rds of voters in exit polling, is starting a movement?
That’s no movement. Time to get out of the clouds.
Oh and Hillary gets more voted than Trump so far. That says it all about your so called “movement”. More like irritable bowel movement.
GC1985
@GC1985: *more votes.
I am sorry but a guy who isn’t even liked by two thirds of voters isn’t starting a movement.
Let’s face reality… Trump is the weakest candidate and people are voting for him but will vote Hillary in the general election. The problem for the GOP is they have too many candidates siphoning votes from each other. Trump rarely gets above 35%. That says a lot. Has he even got 50% of voters in any state?
Some movement. Lots of hot air.
Bob LaBlah
@1EqualityUSA: Hillary is playing the race card and it is backfiring on her. Her speeches do not inspire a crowd to its feet without a majorette leading it on. Sanders is saying the things young people want to hear, “free education”.
GC1985
And I apologize for the third post, but you aren’t voting for one man. You are voting in a party. If you support Trump, you support all the Rupert Murdoch and Sheldon Adelson backed trash in the party.
So you to me are voting for a man hated by two thirds of voters and is part of a highly bigoted party. Great strategy, mcblah.
Michael A. Hann
Do that how?
GC1985
@Bob LaBlah: Yet Sanders is still 200+ delegates behind. Hillary will win the nomination. In fact Hillary gained delegates last night. Nothing is backfiring. Get a reality check.
But hey… Keep supporting a guy who has support from maybe one fourth of the electorate… If even that.

Middle of the road. Hillary is going to build, methodically, on the solid foundation that Obama formed. Now, if we can vote the Rebiblicans out of their Senate seats, we’ll make progress. I want three Supreme Court justices chosen in her first term. I want Citizens United retired to the bin of bad ideas. In her second term, women need to make headway. Middle of the road whereby nobody is ecstatic, though progress is forged. Trump puts the dic in dictator.

I went kamikaze on the yard yesterday. Now it looks like a military base it’s so clean. That’s what Democrats will do to the snapping turtle and the dorsal-finned ReBiblicans wanting to push their theocracy onto others. Republicans like their constituents uneducated and fiscally threatened, as they’re easily manipulated.
Louie Mars
Good luck with that…
scotshot
@Bob LaBlah: “Playing the race card”? Seems as if the GOTP has done that for decades, notably during the Presidency of Barack Obama. Troll on.
duecers
Cruz and his ilk embody everything that is wrong with organized religion. They are eliteist, bigots and hate mongerers. They want legislate everyone’s life down to the intimate details of everyday life. Yet they cannot surpass even the Bible’s call for tolerance. To preach hate, exclusion and prejudice is not Christian as I understand Christianity. A vote for Cruz is a vote for freedom, democracy and decency!
duecers
@duecers: make that a vote against freedom, democracy and deceny!
Juanjo
There is no surprise here. Cruz and his father are both adherents of what is called Christian Dominionism which is a far right form of Christianity which says that the United States is a Christian nation and the constitution and government must be interpreted and run according to biblical law – as they interpret it. So yes, they want to impose a death penalty for homosexuality and adultery not to mention blasphemy. They want to impose their own form of Sharia law on the country.

Does anyone know who this Huma Abdeen is on her (Hillary) staff? It sounds like the ol’ hillbilly is hiring……she is going to lose.
GC1985
@Bob LaBlah: You are suffering from delusions. She is 220+ delegates ahead of Sanders and even more (600+) with super delegates. You are delusional… Explains the support of Trumpy Dump.
GC1985
Sorry to burst the bubble of little Bob, but Sanders fell further behind last night. He needs to win every remaining state by around 55-60% to win the nomination. Fat chance. The next key races are all closed primaries. So Clinton will benefit from that immensely. Sanders couldn’t even win by all that much in Michigan. All said and done he won only by 1.4%… Meaning his net gain was negligible.
Math hurts. Well it has to suck supporting a candidate that can’t even get pass 36% in a primary.
1EqualityUSA
Bob LaBlah, you make it sound as though she just submitted her resume last week. Wow.

@1EqualityUSA: Ok. Answer me this. What is her message? We all know Trumps, but what is her’s? Or should I say where is her’s? At least Bernie speaks of something I could not agree more with him on, free education for community colleges. The educational system in this country has dropped to the level where high school seniors (race, state and economic status be damned) are having to take remedial course because they can’t qualify for universities. A community college in every state is referred to as the thirteenth and fourteenth grade. That not withstanding, it is what it is. Just what they are calling it based on a two year certificate.
And let’s not even bring up the cost of text books for people who don’t make enough to pay rent. Bernie is right. Now what did you say about Hillary’s message?
scotshot
@Bob LaBlah
If you want to know what Hilary Clinton’s accomplishments are, Google, or are you a product of the failed education system you complain about?
Regarding Bernie’s wish of free higher level education, how do you propose we pay for it?
Clueless?

Bob LaBlah, have you not been tuning into the debates? “Her” is fairly specific. If you can find obscure video footage of a queerty commenter fighting with someone in a fast-food restaurant, I’m positive you’ll be able to research this.

@scotshot: You must be late to the conversation. I am a former Reagan Democrat who supports Trump. As to how we got to Bernie it was because I more or less said “don’t count him totally out of the picture.” As for him winning it is highly unlikely, but if he wanted to be vindictive after winning a few more states next week he could run on a third party ticket, just as Trump, and be a wild card winner.
The more crowded the field gets the more likely the winner will win with right at forty percent of the vote. It could actually be in the thirties in a situation where Mitt Romeny, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders ran at the same time. Trump and Clinton having the backing of their party while Romney and Sanders create hell for both running as independents. This is so crazy that it might just happen.
Bob LaBlah
@scotshot: If the republicans decided to do a brokered convention what they will have admitted to is their guilt of what happened in Florida back in 2000. Just as they stole the election from Gore they are going to simply take away the nomination from Trump. If they do that Trump will win by a landslide because that will be the final nail in the coffin as for Bubbah and company who are already telling them they don’t like what has been going on by supporting Trump already.
We are going to have to accept Trump is going to be the next president. What I wonder is if Christy is going to get the Supreme Court or Attorney General. I doubt he will get the V.P. slot because that is clearly a second-fiddle position and he (Christy) ain’t the second fiddle type.
1EqualityUSA
Bob LaBlah, These are the posts I enjoy reading after the election. Many have said the same things with the same conviction for Romney. Bubbah, eating oatmeal with his spare teeth, will be so disappointed when their KKK (I’m going to steal this from Maddow) Klandidate nose-dives into the bin of obscurity. Even in backwoods Tennessee, the youngsters will start to rebel against the hatreds of their parents, i.e.: It will “be cool” to be inclusive with respect to gays, much like the Sa ve the W hal es was in the ’70’s. Those who had never even seen an Ocean ascribed to the cause.
1EqualityUSA
Likely, the pillow-biter-in-chief, TRUSted, will slither up out of the pipes and be the GOP’s nominee, that is, if Romney doesn’t slither up faster for a brokered convention. ew. Either way, the Republican Party is obsolete.
GC1985
@Bob LaBlah: You are about as dumb as a rock if you think we will have to accept Trump. He is the weakest candidate you dullard. We don’t have to accept anything. Hillary has more support than he does. I already stated to you Trump only has support from maybe one fourth of the voters. He is hated by most people. His disapproval ratings according to exit polling is around 65%. So tell me how is going to win the White House with numbers like that?
@Bob LaBlah: Bernie isn’t running on a third party ticket. He has already said he wouldn’t do that. You have no understanding of politics. At all. Bernie doesn’t want to give any advantage to that brainless tool Trump.
And by the what is Trumps message? Because that keeps changing. And 80% of everything he says are proven lies…
GC1985
@Bob LaBlah: You lie about everything. Trump keeps lying to your face and you keep accepting it. His views change at the drop of a hat. I already posted links to Politifact showing a bunch of Clinton policy statements and most were proven accurate. Trump on the other hand is a proven liar and has received the liar pants on fire designation numerous times.
Go to politifact and look up both candidates. There you will also find Hillary’s policy statements (highly specific and researched to prove the veracity of those statements).
You need to teach yourself to say “President Hillary Clinton”. That is something you will have to accept in the next year or so. Hillary will beat Trump easily after the Republicans split apart.
1EqualityUSA
He wants the info delivered to him, like meal on wheels. How many “Hungry Man” dinners are stacked in the freeze, Bob LaBlah? Bob LaBlah
@1EqualityUSA: My bad. I hadn’t figured you for the intellectual lightweight that you obviously are. The more I look at your name the more obvious it should have been from the start.

Reagan Democrat = A self hating gay who voted for the man who:
Refused to say the word AIDS until the last year of his Presidency and also cut funding for AIDS research while people begged for more. Iran Contra. Massive tax cuts that trickled down to the rich and tax increases for the middle class. Funded terrorists. Raided the Social Security Trust Fund to offset tax cuts.
There’s lots more, Google can help refresh your memory.
I won’t spend a lot of time on Trump, but he’s against SSM, Supports RFRA, wants to repeal Civil Rights protections – well the few we have, anyway, he’s the same as the others.
Did you see the news tonight? It’s not too far off that these people will start Gay bashing and go after other minorities. Seem like this occurred a few decades ago.
