Seth Own is an 18-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida who has had one hell of a year.
After his dad snooped through his phone and discovered Seth is gay, he was thrown out of the house by his zealous parents.
Seth responded with a determination to succeed that would be impressive from any youth, let alone one whoâd been made homeless by unaccepting parents.
Check out his story below:
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.

More power to this young person and to all whose parents reject them instead of giving them unconditional and affirming love. How could you throw your own child out of the house over nutty religious b He’s smart, hardworking and will be a credit to any community he’s apart of, so I hope he continues to succeed in everything he does!
On a slightly different note, Georgetown is $77K a year? How are most parents or students supposed to afford tuitions like this? Even with his $50K scholarship, he still has to come up with $25K, which is more than many Americans earn in a year. The US median income was only $59,039 in 2016, and over all, wages have fallen since 2017.
Heywood Jablowme
I almost hate to quibble with you, but I hope we can retire the overused word “unconditional” in reference to supposedly ideal parental attitudes. Most anti-gay bullies, for instance, seem to have parents who give them “unconditional” love and think their little monsters can do no wrong.
brianlange
Well I know a guy his Dad threw him out in a drunken rate on his 18th birthday with no options. This guy could have made it work
tr6886
$77K a year includes annual tuition and fees, 52k, plus living expense, 25k; that’s how expensive private school is. If he attends public school in Florida , it will be total 35k. He needs to make better judgement since private institutes don’t guarantee success.
DCguy
No, but they network you into a group of people with ties to businesses and organizations that have access to huge amounts of money. There are certain organizations that only hire people from the Ivy’s or that are top 10 schools. That’s why they get away with charging that.
That said, you’re right, if he’s going to become something where the college you went to doesn’t matter then the savings for a public school would be worth it.

He stated that he wants to become a lawyer, to defend others in similar situations. Georgetown Law is one of the premier law schools in the country. They don’t just charge high tuitions because they can, that pays for facilities, libraries, and professors who are among the best in the world. Not so coincidentally, it allows Georgetown to cover the tuition of brilliant, deserving students. Lost in the comments was that Georgetown is covering $55K in tuition, which doesn’t cover housing, etc. The $22K that he needs to come up with is still far less than most public law schools would charge for tuition.
brianlange
NO, he should not settle.nO went to Carnegie Mellon for an MBA. Brad school was $92,099 not counting room and board. NEVER SETTLE!
GourmetGuy
Bravo, Seth! Your courage and resourcefulness are an inspiration to us all. It seems that you’re going to have a very happy ending. Don’t forget to fall in love!
fur_hunter
I wish Seth the best of luck and success in the future. I believe he will make it, regardless of what obstacles he faces. He has the determination.

Just want to say I hope his parents have all the bad luck in the world. I cannot believe that any parent can just throw away a child because he or she doesn’t conform to their way of thinking. I’m sure they disappointed their parents many times in their lives. I hope this young man completely cuts his parents out of his life.
jlew64
No one else noticing that the headline is completely misleading? They threw him out over religious differences, not for being gay. Still a shitty thing to do, and more power to this kid, but this isn’t a gay issue.
Juanjo
Man, that is a major disconnect with reality. The “religious” difference was he was gay.
Donston
Most non religious parents (even if they’re homophobes) are not going to kick their kid out for coming out as gay nowadays. I would wager that at least 60-70% of “queer” people who get kick out of their homes come from very religious families. And the biggest justification for homophobia remains religion. So, let’s not act pretend to be stupid/naive.
DarkZephyr
@jlew64 The “religious difference” was that they and their church teach that being gay is a sin while he didn’t agree… His father refused to compromise and let him go to a church that was gay affirming. So essentially the religious difference is that he was gay (and not ashamed of it). As other posters have pointed out to you. C’mon Dude.
Heywood Jablowme
He’s past his 18th birthday and he’s a high school graduate. In ancient times (i.e. the 1970s) those two facts alone would lead most parents to “kick you out” of the parental nest.
DarkZephyr
@Heywood Jablowme
Not months before high school graduation, and certainly not to where you’re homeless.
JARR25
What IS your reality?!!!? They kicked him out for their religious beliefs thinking being Gay is a SIN!!! HOW IS THAT _DIFFICULT_ to comprehend?!!!?
JARR25
Once again, Willful-ignorance reigns! And you people wonder why “straight” people still have a problem? _I_ who’s never been in the closet is infuriated by most of you. But sadness is what washes over me mostly.
DCguy
IT’s adorable when the anti-LGBT troll accounts try to “Orwell” the language.
Sweetie, their “religious differences” were that they’re bigots who hate LGBT people. Nice try.
Lacuevaman
he was not “thrown out”. he decided to leave: a distinction with a difference. as with all things, i’m sure there is more to the story, regardless, he appears to be a fine and together young man.
Jaybyrd53
First off Your awesome for for not letting your parents redneck attitude affect you negatively and for taking this awful experience and turning it into something positive. you make sure you get a job that pays you oodles of cash and when you start making that money buy the most expensive car you can afford and pull up to your parents home honk your horn and when they come out give them the finger, Burn Rubber & drive away and never look back!!
Cheers and all the best to you! and remember your GAY family and true friends will support you through anything!!!
ingyaom
This guy didn’t need to switch to a new church; he needed to stop going to churches all together.
ingyaom
His name is Seth Owen, too, not “Seth Own”.
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
Unfortunately Seth does not have Parents. He has two people who produced a child who believe hate filled, noxious, abhorrent religious dogma derived from a wicked book of vile fables……..
That he was able to stay strong and thrive is the greatest FCUK YOU to the vile creatures who bore him. I for one will be contributing to his cause and urge others to do so.
A message to his “parents” karma is a bitch and many times it arrives with its Sister retribution…
lambchopp59
I can second that e-motion. It was the ultimate irony to be recruited by my brother to place my dad in a nursing home, the same one who neglected, disowned, hated and attempted to murder his son in 1976. My aunt who took me in some years later praised me for being nothing like him.
13 years later my ex attempted to force a reconciliation between me and my parents. I came home from my internship to the horror of my parents sitting on our couch. Although we had a relatively amicable visit, we put their crabby asses back on the damn plane, and Eldon apologized profusely for ever thinking they could be reasoned with. I had put the whole ugly business so far behind me I failed to inform him about what they were. I forgave him, his heart was in the right place.
Seeing them one last time in their declining months 3 years ago was truly horrifying. These were no longer humans, they were total GOMERs. Addicted to Fox Noise but no longer even comprehending the dumbed-down content, hate, racism, xenophobia, homophobia and “lib-phobia” had totally consumed them. My nearby brother had all he could take of them, especially my violent, truly possessed wackjob of a dad. Mom became manageable once dad was removed, and it was a grueling nightmare of a legal process, involving many sheriff’s officer visits, a game of dirty “white lie” style tricks to get them to doctor’s evaluation appointments, and a final decisive competency hearing that largely resolved the problem.
Play’s well’s words are wise here, Seth, and to any others with similar difficulties. Don’t allow blood to be considered thicker than those of your chosen families unless outreach comes from them. If they are prone to deplorable behavior, this will likely get worse. I inherited nothing from my parents, nor did I want any of what was left, it cost me many times than anything I’d have physically gained and an unhealthy dose of PTSD that was a bugger to overcome.
It’s simply not worth the cost to your homeostasis it to try to bridge a gap to the hatefully entrenched.
bobnla
Seth,
congratulations on your determination, couraqe, industry and pride. You are an exemplary fine young man, rising above the bias and bigotry of family, the indignity of being thrown out of the house, with the harnessing of your physical and emotional strength to move on, your head held high.
irbaboon
Jacksonville Florida is a horrible place
Thad
And yet their local TV news chose to air this story. And Seth found support and sustenance in his community. Surprises are everywhere.
Lacuevaman
agree Thad.
Terrycloth
He has the drive the willpower and determination to make it on his own. Im.sure he will..maybe one day his parents will come around.. i.hope they find Pflag…let your parents come to you after all, they threw you out..you dont need religion or some science fiction book to guide you.. dont let either to tell you how to live your life ..you have a brain think for yourself. All the Best kid…
Kevan1
I will never understand how parents who love their kids could ever throw them out over such BS. Throwing a child out who has never physically attacked their family or siblings is not acceptable.
DCguy
Because they don’t love their kids. At least they don’t love them nearly as much as they enjoy their hatred.

Buh-bye mums and daddums—have a great f**kin’ life!!!!!!!!

Hi Seth,
You’re probably not reading here but….
You’re welcome to stay with a two-student household w/a lesbian mum, in Western AU (your own room!). See if your uni choices allow the int’l swap.
Sorry for your loss. I would never toss my children. I’m so sorry. đ
Thad
The love you give will return to you.

Did you mean to write “zealot?”
Luis
The fundraising campaign is now at $47,738 of $20,000 goal đ

Bottom line is that his parents are a**holes. I hope he has a loving support system outside of his parents.

@ JARR25…they would rather believe a Book and the invisible man in the sky..smh
