Author Terry McMillan’s got plenty to say, especially when it comes to her ex-husband, Jonathan Plummer. As Plummer plugs his unimaginative “novel”, McMillan sits down with Uneq magazine to offer her two cents on Plummer’s one-track mind.
You’ll have to buy the current issue of Uneq to read the interview. The mag’s press flack, however, did pass along a long-winded, explosive and very angry statement from McMillan. Here’s a sample:

I am not doing this to literally demonize Jonathan Plummer, but he is an evil person to have done the things he has taken pains to achieve. I loved him for years and did everything I could to help him evolve. The reason I told UNEQ Magazine so many of these previously undisclosed details is because he needs to be exposed to the community he is also pimping. He forgets that gay men have sisters and mothers. And it is because he doesn’t care, just like he doesn’t care if he ever goes back to Jamaica. It is the main reason he went on television to announce his homosexuality. This is how slick he is. This was the main reason he and his attorney went on Good Morning America and leaked my so-called homophobic insults to the media and included them in court documents. But the public had no idea of this goal because the focus was on ‘Terry the Homophobic Witch’ and not his theft, betrayal or deception. What was it that he gave me that would make any man think that I should pay him spousal support? A grown, healthy, gay man who was all of 31 years old? I did not rent a husband. He tried to paint me as Mommie Dearest and apparently some people bought it because he did to the gay community what he had been so successfully doing to me for years and that was to play the sympathy ‘I’m-the-victim’ card. And he is certainly a very high-profile victim who has taken every opportunity he could to take advantage of his so-called victimization.”

What I would really like UNEQ Magazine and members of the gay community to be very cognizant of is what is it that he has done since he came out of the closet that might benefit other gay men (and women) who are afraid to come out? What kind of platform has he chosen to draw positive attention to this problem? In every interview he’s done, not once does he mention anything he’s doing to help other oppressed gay men and women. Someone should ask him about this instead of always focusing on me. I’ve done more and shown more support for the gay community over the years than Jonathan will ever do. What is it he’s doing besides getting a tell-all book published to draw attention to himself with the hopes of making money and once again all by pimping my fame? What has he done? Nothing. The gay men and women who are still suffering in Jamaica have not benefited one iota because of him. Quite the contrary. He gives gay men a bad rep as far as I can see. But he thought everybody was going to love him unconditionally. And look at what a spectacle he is making of himself and a mockery of his sexuality, all for his own personal gain. He could care less about men still in the closet.

In my ministry of forty years, I have met many spouses of gays and lesbians. Of course, I mean the opposite sex variety. There are many stories over many different decades of laws and of mores, so it is difficult often to paint with too broad a brush.
There are some who divorced, and some who remained in marriages of openness and convenience.
There were total beards and there were some who had genuine if not platonic love for one another.
Since sexuality can be divorced from orientation for sure, there were those who could function heterosexually on a simply biological level.
The majority, however, chose to divorce and to start anew. The heterosexual spouse would eventually marry a true heterosexual person, and the gay relationship for the other as well.
Since 2003, and for the entire nation since 2005, marriage is serious business regardless of psychosexual orientation. Since our legal marriage rights, divorce and all its ramifications are responsibilities for either coupling.
It is a brave, new world for us, and we are still explorers of its many privileges and duties.

Plummer asserts as much and more in one of his court filings with one common denominator, her alleged repeated use of the words “fag†and “faggy.†Who knows how much is true, but if he submitted the actual letter from her above, as loathsome as he appears to be, her homophobia is undeniable. Not that I think Terry McMillan has behaved particularly well, but El Polacko, if your hot new flame suddenly turned out to be straight and just played you for a green card I’ll bet you’d be pissed too.
Sure, she’s been pretty loud about the whole thing and has even dropped the F-bomb a few times, but it seems like some folks easily forget that the guy deliberately screwed her over and then became a media whore. She got hurt pretty badly, and humiliated as well, considering that she wrote a pretty famous story about what she thought was their loving relationship.

I abhor what Barack Obama is trying to pull now with the Donnie & Barack Gospel Show. I loathe Condosleazy Rice for the liar and unindicted war criminal that she is. Roy Cohn, though as gay as anyone despite his denials, was a vile monster of a man. Gay Repug porn star Matt Sanchez is a pig. But you will never see me use “nigger” or “kike” or “spic” in relation to them.
I have no problem with any of her orientation-neutral epithets and their truth or falsehood is irrelevant to me. Con artists, liars, thieves, extortionists come in all colors and orientations. He could be all of those things but they would still not acquit her of her homophobic smears, and her attempt to deny or distract the latter by reference to the former only reinforces that that homophobia is more than skin deep.

Oh, get over yourself, Leland. At least ProfessorVP’s insults are occasionally funny. I never said anything about it being okay to drop the F-bomb. But I just don’t see how her bad behavior makes Jonathan Plummer some kind of victim or martyr for the gay cause. Like people have been saying, it just makes McMillan look bad. (As it would if she were white and using the N-bomb.) It’s not like her words are intimidating him or keeping him down in any way.
But this is tangential. The point of my prior comment was not that it’s okay for McMillan to call her ex a faggot. It was just that this isn’t a case of woman-picking-on-poor-innocent-queer. Mr. Plummer seems to be doing fine and if anyone wants to take up a defamed gay cause there are far more worthy ones.
But who cares about either of them, really? They’re like McGreevey and McGreevey all over again.

Enough of Terry’s monkey business. I am sick of her monkeying around the East Bay, especially Oakland. The missing link in her logic is that even Stevie Wonder could see Jonathan is gay. She needs to swing from another tree and find a new banana to chomp on. She has gone ape too many times.
