Both New York’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Rhode Island’s Gov. Lincoln Chafee gave shout outs to legalizing same-sex marriage in their “LOOK AT ME, I’M THE GOVERNOR!!” speeches. Cuomo: “We believe in justice for all? Well then let’s pass marriage equality once and for all!” Chaffee: “When marriage equality is the law in Rhode Island we honor our forefathers who risked their lives and fortune in the pursuit of human equality.”

Gov. Cuomo is a good man and I think he means it when he says he wants gay marriage for New Yorkers. But, Gov. Cuomo presides over a state with many social conservatives (sorry, but Upstate ain’t the Village) and many Catholics who view gays as the plague.
If gay marriage passes in New York, I will be shocked.

Passage of same-sex marriage in NY all depends on the state senate. Legislation legalizing same-sex marriage has repeatedly passed the assembly only to fail in the senate. The Republicans now have slim control of the senate and they have consistently voted down gay marriage en masse along with a handful of conservative Democrats.
Cuomo is now the third straight pro-gay marriage governor we’ve had. A veto threat isn’t the problem, its the NY State senate.

As far as the New York state senate goes, the anti-gay marriage Democrat base has virtually collapsed, leaving only 4 of the 8, while at least 1 of the 4 left (Addabbo) likely to flip to yes. Also, Skelos has said he would bring it to a vote if passed in the assembly, and that he would encourage his party to vote based on their conscience.

To bad both of them have so little power to actually accomplish these feats and the legislative branch in both NY and RI have said time and time again that they have no intention of enacting same sex marriage in their states.
So, while this is a nice nod, the people in those states really need to get to work on changing the mind of legislators and other citizens.
They should try to time both attacks at the same time so they can divide the resources of the Mormon church. I wonder if the Mormon church is dumb enough to bankrupt themselves and all of their members fighting this “holy” war or if they will eventually give it up.
