“Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by a father and mother, a single father, two fathers, a step father, a grandfather, or caring guardian,” President Obama said in a Father’s Day proclamation, opting not to note “nurturing families” are different from “legally recognized families,” which he chooses not to support.
The Irony of Obama’s 2 Daddies Mention Wasn’t Lost On Anyone, Right?

Well, it is something.
The first US death from AIDS occurred 5 days before Ronald Reagan became president. During his 8 years in office, over 80,000 American died of AIDS while over 150,000 additional American were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The CDC estimated, at the time, that an additional 500,000 Americans were HIV infected but had not yet been tested or been diagnosed with the infection.
NOT ONCE DURING HIS 8 YEARS IN OFFICE DID REAGAN EVER MENTION HIV/AIDS — Not one word about any treatment, not one word about any safe-sex practices, not one word about any prevention/prevention programs, not one word about any medical research.
I’ll take Obama’s “nurturing families .. [including] two fathers…” every time over omission.

I agree with you 100% Mike! The President is doing the best job he can to make sure we have equal rights. At least he mentioned 2 dads! Queerty needs to stop being so whiny and be a little patient. We are seeing progess.
Tricky
Queerty, you do know that if President Obama said he supported SSM, he would have never been elected, right? I am just saying that he may not be perfect, and no one is, but he is the best yet. (in terms of Gay rights)

@Mike in Asheville: “NOT ONCE DURING HIS 8 YEARS IN OFFICE DID REAGAN EVER MENTION HIV/AIDS — Not one word about any treatment, not one word about any safe-sex practices, not one word about any prevention/prevention programs, not one word about any medical research.”
Mike, that’s simply not true. He didn’t mention it till 1985, but after that he said a lot about it. He tried to claim the government was doing everything it could, but not many people bought that. Reagan himself apologized in 1990 for not having done more while he was in office.
Check Google News Archive for numerous references to Reagan and AIDS. Such as this article in the Times from Sept 17, 1985:
http://www.nytimes.com/1985/09/18/us/reagan-defends-financing-for-aids.html
Hilarious
McCain would’ve protected the sanctity of marriage by not mentioning us at all.
I’m not sure what you expect Obama to do. He’s showing that we’re on the list, but he can’t up and change things over night. If he rocks the boat too hard you can be sure they’ll come up with a reason to have him impeached or just undo everything he’s touched next election.
He has to be subtle so back off already.

When the next right-wing Republican is elected to the presidency is when Obama and all his incremental steps of progress will be appreciated, so keep whinning Queerty.
james_from_the_great_city_of_cambridge
Thank you TJR. And the shut the hell up Queerty. Your ridiculous attacks on Obama are making me ill. He’s to the left of the Clintons and every President we ever had on the issue and he’s trying his best in an absolutely toxic political environment. Either you’re a bunch of whiny New Yorkers who are still carrying a torch for that right-wing slut Hillary (she’s literally a slut for conservative ideals; let’s not forget how conservative that woman and her husband were; how she encouraged him to sign DOMA because they thought the way to stay popular after the Repubs took over in 1994 was to sell out their base, which they did on DOMA, welfare “reform”, the gutting of Glass-Steagall which wall street wanted and which led directly to our current economic crisis, I can go on for a while…) or perhaps you’re idiot teabaggers in disguise. Or maybe that Jason character who’s always attacking Blacks in these threads is a Queerty editor. It would certainly explain your attitude towards Obama, which started right after his inauguration. Tiresome Queens.

fuck i hate queerty.
james_from_the_great_city_of_cambridge
Another thing; judging by the stupid title of this stupid thread, Queerty editors use the term “irony” like Alanis Morrisette does, incorrectly. Dumbasses.
Forget the Umbrella-It's Raining Men!
The word IRONY can be used in more than just one context. It doesn’t just mean a dramatic device used in literature or theatre.
For example: Obama encourages fathers of children to be married, yet he dismissed the importance of recognizing the legal marriages of same-sex partners who are legally wed. It is ironic that he takes this stand, while discouraging unwed fathers. In this context irony appears to denote hypocrisy.

[i·ro·ny ? ?/?a?r?ni, ?a??r-/ Show Spelled[ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-]
–noun, plural -nies.
1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
2. Literature .
a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.
b. (esp. in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., esp. as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
3. Socratic irony.
4. dramatic irony.
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
6. the incongruity of this.
7. an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.
8. an objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality, etc.

@Forget the Umbrella-It’s Raining Men!: But Obama DOES NOT dismiss the importance of gay unions so there is no proper use of term “irony” here. This dismissal is just in the “minds” of the lunatic Queerty editors. He’s certainly not marching in the streets advocating gay marriage because you see, HE NEEDS TO STAY IN OFFICE! He and the Dems would get wiped off the map if they stood up and did that (if you haven’t noticed, gay marriage failed even here in New England in Maine and in California, and neither are exactly conservative bastions.) However, we all know he supports civil unions, he proudly signed the hate crimes bill during daylight hours after having invited the press to witness it, and he’s about to repeal DADT. He’s also the only President in the history of this country who takes pains to include us in proclamations like this Father’s Day one; he’s also appointed openly gay people to top positions in his government. What the fuck else do you idiots want from him? You want him to bugger Joe Biden in the White House press room in front of the media then declare June, July and August Gay Porn Month? Would that finally satisfy you? All you Obama haters, you’re no better than the teabaggers and might actually be worse because you don’t have an idealogical problem with him, you just can’t see the forest for the trees. Enjoy President Palin and Vice President Rick Santorum in 2012…I’m sure you’ll still be screaming about how awful Obama was when Palin is rounding us up and putting us in straight re-education camps.

Well I agree that irony isn’t exactly the correct word. I’d prefer any of the following synonyms of disingenuous:
Not being what one purports to be: ambidextrous, insincere, left-handed, mala fide. See honest/dishonest.
Marked by treachery or deceit: devious, duplicitous, guileful, indirect, lubricious, shifty, sneaky, underhand, underhanded. See honest/dishonest.
You all act like a right winger was/is the only option. Like Bubba said, Obama s the biggest fairy tale. Where is dontblamemeivotedforhillary when you need him?
Eric Dose
Wow, Queerty, I think we’ve had enough of you nitpicking the president. Lay off and appreciate the fact that **we’re actually being mentioned and not hidden like we’re second classes citizens**
You can find fault in Obama no matter what, even if you have to make it up yourself.
Markie-Mark
The Audacity of excuses! FYI, the Democratic Party pays people to monitor this site and others and attack anyone who criticises President Oilbama.
The editorial policy of Queerty is well known and nothing new. I suggest that Oilbamapologists stick to the Democratic Party website where they can continue to adulate Oilbama. It is very simple to avoid blogs that disagree with your viewpoint.
Oilbamapologists: Begone before a house falls on you!

@Markie-Mark:
The Republican party (bigot teapartiers/right-wingers) does the same, hence your post!

@slobone: Okay, I was wrong about never. The link you posted clearly states, though, that the 1985 press conference answer (4 1/2 years into office) was Reagan’s first public comment about HIV/AIDS.
I’ll restate my comment that not once in his 8 years in office did Ronald Reagan speak to the American people about HIV/AIDS in a manner about supporting patients and their needs, about prevention programs, or about general information/public awareness about HIV/AIDS. Reagan failed to use the bully pulpit of the presidency to protect Americans, gay and straight, from this devastating disease (completely unlike G.W. Bush, of all assholes, who made public awareness statements about Avian Flu). Public discourse from the government was limited to a 1 time address by C. Everett Koop, MD, the surgeon general and a pamphlet issued by his office sent to general households.
I’ll stand by my statement that I’ll take Mr. Obama’s “Nurturing … two dads…”.
Markie-Mark
@tjr101: Actually, I’m a member of the Green Party. I don’t vote for candidates who are against marriage equality.
Did you ever hear what Jesse Ventura said about politics? He said it was like big time wressling: republicans and democrats go into the ring and pull each others’ hair and gouge each others’ eyes. Then back in the locker room they laugh and pat each other on the back and say: we sure put on a good show for those fools.
You are being laughed at by the democrats. It’s embarrasing to watch. I wish there was something that I could say to make you wake up.
Markie-Mark
By the way, I agree that Obama is possibly a better president than McPantload. But I think that Dennis Kucinich would have been better. And even Hillary Clinton (I don’t like her at all and she’s against marriage equality, like Obama)would probably have been a better president than this incompetent nincompoop.
It was difficult to watch gay democrats turn their backs on Dennis Kucinich (who was in favor of gay marriage and had a stellar voting record) and faun over Obama. What’s up with that? Someone please explain that to me.
Markie-Mark
Here’s my prediction for your precious lord and master: He’s not going to run in 2012 because he will know soon after the elections this fall that he will not be re-elected. And Hillary will run. And all the gays will vote for her even though she’s against marriage equality. But I don’t think any democrat will be able to win after the shit mess that Oilbama is leaving us with. Sigh. Hope gay people can wake up soon.
