The Straight Married DADT-Loving Congressman Whoring Himself Out On Craigslist (Has Resigned)

No, it’s not Rep. Duncan Hunter as you might’ve hoped. It’s Rep. Christopher Lee, the Republican from New York, who voted against repealing DADT, and who has been (allegedly!!) sending out shirtless pictures to at least one woman on Craiglist and pretending to be a divorced lobbyist when in fact he’s way worse: a married lawmaker. UPDATE: It took just three hours after the story broke for Lee to resign. Says the now-former congressman in a statement: “It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness. The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately.”

Most politicians by definition are whores.

  • christopher di spirito

Where’s that Republican apologist South Side Shorty?

I’ll have an explanation about how Rep. Lee is the victim of a liberal smear campaign, or, Rep. Lee’s head was photoshopped onto the body of a younger man, or, Rep. Lee’s Congressional email account was hacked by someone on Queerty’s staff.

He always has an answer for his freaky GOP brethren.

  • ron

He just resigned. The fool. He’s pretty humpy though……

  • declanto

    @ron: You’re desperate….I like that :-D

  • Justwow

Damn he’s actually str8. the gay twist would’ve been great icing.

  • justiceontherocks

@Harbo: What do you mean “most”? Try “all.”

  • GayGOP

I do wish that Representative Lee hadn’t resigned. However, I find stupid the idea that someone who has a sex scandal, so long as it does not involve children or animals, should resign. I can’t stand the persecution President Clinton got for his affairs, and this should have not had Representative Lee resigning.

That being said, things are not going to change. This district was the part of NY that voted heavily for Paladino in 2010. It’s a largely rural and blue-collar suburb district.

  • justiceontherocks

@GayGOP: I agree withh you that we’re way too puritanical about sex. In this case, the conduct showed such poor judgment that resigning was the right move. Buying a ho would have been a lot less damaging.

  • dvlaries

    So fast?!

Jesus, it’s not like he was trying to score some cop cock in a stinking Minneapolis airport restroom, plead guilty, then trying to undo the plea through a succession of appeals courts.

Perhaps Lee’s got a wife who draws an immediate line on the level of public humiliation she’ll stand.

  • Hyhybt

All other considerations aside, doing something like this is proof that he’s simply too *stupid* to belong in Congress. So regardless of moral considerations, a resignation was in order. (On the other hand, the fact that he resigned so quickly shows good sense; perhaps he just doesn’t know when to use it.)

  • ron

ummm, ok, so all else aside… YUM! Daddy!

  • Dom

I live in Lee’s district; he would send mailers asking what we thought (as voters) were the most important issues. I’d always check other and write in “REPEAL DADT AND DOMA!”.

It is unfortunate that the town I live in gets lumped in with the ass backwards farm counties to the east and north – but I can’t say I’m unhappy to see Chris Lee go.

  • Isaak

    What does DADT mean?

  • thedarkchariot

    Don’t ask. Don’t tell.

  • Jamie

What’s up with the headline for this article? Exactly who does Queerty mean with “Give Us Free Reign…” because the only person who exposed anything was some editor at Gawker. And as though propriety ever stopped anyone at Queerty!

Nevertheless, yes, we actually should have free reign to expose hypocrites behavior. Just as they want to deny us everything from marriage equality to workplace protections based on what they call our behavior, we should certainly deny them any compassion and forgiveness for the consequences of their behavior. Maybe one day the conservatives will learn that compassion is a two-way street, and if they expect to be treated with respect, don’t be such assholes.

Finally, there is clearly more going on here than the representative getting caught with a naughty photo on CL. My guess is the skeleton of an aborted fetus in his closet. We’ll never know; he struck a deal and resigned to cover it up.

What’s up with the headline for this article?

It’s an editorial question. Usually I and many others would take the position that it’s none of our business, just as our private live in none of his.

BUT…. he HAS made our private lives his business, and in the interests of equality for all, that makes him open to be called on his hypocrisy.

From your post, I’m sure you’ll see that with just a moment’s thought.

Rolling in the mud with pigs will only get you dirty.

What people need to understand is that politicians are mostly all frauds, they will do anything to stay in power,

This guy was stupid enough to send a pic over the internet.

“Support Give Us Free Reign Over Exposing His Sex Life?

And doing so would lead us to what exactly?

  • yah

He’s hotter than any twink/queen/steroid gym rat.

  • Zach

No he’s not. He’s in-shape, but sleaze pours from that picture like a river of sludge. Also, he looks a decade older than his actual age.

  • yah

Maybe they are swingers…who are we to judge

  • David Gervais

You are right, what he did is his own private life. It does not make him subject to outing.

However, the question is, does his hypocrisy make him a fair target?

    In my opinion it does.

  • Jay

I don’t care what the congressmen/women do in their own personal time as long as it’s consistent with their public image and votes on the record. In this case, Lee is one of those moralistic assholes who I am sure accuses openly gay/les service members who can’t bear lying to everyone of “flaunting” their sexuality in public, while at the same time actually flaunting his own. Good Riddance Hypocrite!

  • Cam

Good, another hypocrite bites the dust. I think that by announcing that they base their votes on “Family Values” that gives people the right to verify that they are the pristine, faultless people they are pretending to be.

  • Gigi

@Zach: It’s the sludge that makes him look older.

  • robert in NYC

Now let me get this straight, no pun intended. Here’s a typical married republican hypocrite who espouses the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman while getting his rocks off online. So much for that DOMA nonsense. Not one word from NOM and the religious cults either. Where is their condemnation and could they explain how gays marrying brought this behavior about?

  • VictorG

“Did Rep. Lee’s DADT support give us free reign over exposing his sex life?” What kind of reporter are you to ask a question like that? Of course it is in the public’s best interest to know when any politician, especially one who has taken a “moral position” on cultural and civil rights issues, is behaving like a hypocrite.
Do you really have to ask?

  • justiceontherocks

@VictorG: The former rep. exposed his own sex life.

  • Cam

NOW we see why many in the GOP use the Bible as an excuse to be bigoted against gays, but seem to FORGET about the parts that state do not commit adultery, do not divorce, etc…

Isn’t it funny how the Bible is SO important when they use it against behavior that THEY themselves aren’t committing?

The next time any congressperson uses the Bible to defend ANY argument they need to be asked. “Do you also support outlawing divorce and making adultery a crime?”

If they say “No” then they are hypocrites and should lose all credibility. Either they use the Bible or don’t, but shouldn’t be allowed by the press to cherry pick the few parts that just happen to support their pre-existing bigotry.

See the story about David Campbell, the Australian politician, elsewhere on this site.

I think JD asked a valid and important question. We call out the ethical failures of politicians and religious leaders all the time.

I think it is a worthwhile and valuable exercise to give ourselves an ethical check-up once in a while.

We do not want to expose their hypocrisy just to catch their disease ourselves.

  • phx

@GayGOP: It’s not about his sex life. He had to resign because it’s a distraction and NYS is in a severe fiscal crisis right now. He did the right thing. We need grownups to represent us.

Perhaps society shouldn’t be so puritanical about sex, but when a supposed conservative runs on a platform of “Christian family values” and “morality,” and vilifies and persecutes minorities, and then is exposed as an inflammatory and hypocritical demagogue, they should absolutely resign.

Why? Because they have ZERO CREDIBILITY.

  • robert in NYC

    No. 30 Cam…right on!

No. 31 Christopher di Spirito……as far as Rudy Giuliani is concerned, banging a first cousin is legal in NYS. He married his first cousin, his first marriage. Apparently, its not considered incest but to me it is since she was a blood relative. The religious denominations jointly condone incest with a first cousin apparently. Hence the hypocrisy and the doublestandard when it comes to LGBT rights.

David Vitter is another GOPer who’s name appeared in the black book of a call girl/escort service and never resigned. Lets not forget Weeper of the House, John Boehner, allegedly having sex with two female lobbyists according to the National Enquirer. Don’t forget, the NE proved the John Edwards debacle to be true.

  • JonJon

It’s not that it didn’t involve small animals or children, it’s the HYPOCRISY! Democrats don’t run around Bible-thumping and self-righteously condemning every thing like the Repukes and the Christianist assholes. Bill Clinton got a blow job….from an adult and suffered immeasurably from these fucking Repukes. Let ’em suffer. Shame. Shame. Shame….Cackle, cackle, cackle

  • ewe

He did nothing illegal. He should not have succumbed to morality by quitting but since he imposed his own brand of morality on people like me, i am thrilled that he is gone.

  • rodrigo

Hmm I bet that if it had been a Democrat senator who pulled this off, all the republicans (and perhaps even queerty) would have been all over it calling the person immoral and against family values and anti american! But since it is a Republican, they don’t say anything. I think its peculiar how quickly he resigned, it makes me think that there was something more to this story than we are led to believe.

And for the record, I am sure that democrats have affairs too, but for the most part its the Republicans that have been caught (like that senator that was in the appalachian trail!)

Aside from sleaze, while he might work out a lot, it looks like there is a lot of flab too, but then maybe the picture isn’t the best. Guess its a matter of taste, but the picture didn’t look hot to me (I imagined a pot belly just below the frame – kind of a Jabba the Hutt who went to a gym, hence my reaction).

When first saw this story, I realized that I can’t keep track of all these stories. We need a summary chart like this, including the religious ones. Does anyone know if there is such a thing out there?

  • Shannon1981

In Answer to the opening line- in a word, YES! And why does this give us free reign? Because he is a hypocrite who, like most conservatives, runs on a platform based on morals, values, and traditional marriage/family. When they do shit like this it should be exposed and ripped apart because they run around condemning us, then do the very things they claim are so harmful to traditional American marriages and families.

  • Jaroslaw

#35 you should have included the multiple divorces, in the case of Rush Blowhard in particular. Thanks.

Oh, and there are other photos of him out there – he doesn’t have a pot belly. I don’t know if “hot” describes him but he’s plenty attractive.

I wouldn’t feel too sorry for his wife though, kids maybe. I find most people who are superficial and only want to marry someone for money, looks, or social status aren’t too surprised when something like this happens.
