His name is Simon. He’s just like you. He has a normal family, amazing friends, typical high school. A lot of his life is great, except he has one huge-ass secret: he’s a gay male homosexual.

Back in November, we posted the first trailer for the gay coming-out film Love, Simon… and it looked good. Now, even more scenes have been spliced together to create the UK version of the trailer… and it looks even better.
Based on Becky Albertalli’s novel Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, the film will be heading to American theaters on March 16th. Take a look and decide whether the film checks all the boxes that make you eagerly drop $9.50 for a box of Milk Duds.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.

(a) Too much plot in the trailer.
(b) $9.50?!?! Where do YOU live?!

Probably San Francisco. That sounds like what snacks cost in theaters here.

It is the King Size box.

What I find odd about this film is people are texting when it so clearly takes place in 1980. If it is taking place today, I think it is rather dated. The whole coming out in high school when everyone supports you is rather dated. This may have been the experience of kids many years ago, but I have doubts there are many high schools left with this much support and not any kids who’ve been out for some time. Moreover, the character in the book was based on a lesbian in Australia. How much that is a model for a contemporary American gay male is debatable. In any case, the movie looks fun and I will go see it (I have Moviepass, so I see most everything), but I think the time for this movie has come and gone.

If this movie took place in 1980, then the story would be totally different. Most likely, he wouldn’t come out at all, and his friends and family wouldn’t support him. It was a different time back then. Things have gotten better for the gay community in recent years, and more and more teens are coming out nowadays. I don’t think anyone’s coming out story will ever be “dated” because this is something that a lot of gay people still go through on a daily basis (whether good experience or bad experience), and this is the kind of movie that can really help and inspire them to be open and proud. It’s still very much relevant to this day.

I run an LGBTQ youth program in Grand Rapids, I work with my ISD, and SBE, I can tell you unequivocally while things have gotten better, it still sucks for too many queer kids. There is still so much violence perpetrated against our youth. There are FB pages that go up just to torment them. Just because we hear some awesome stories of Prom Kings dating, football players coming out, trans Prom Queens etc…Doesn’t mean that’s the norm. It also matters where you live. It’s much better on the coasts or near big cities where you have community centers or “gayberhoods” but even then it can still be toxic. Check out the CDC’s youth risk behavior survey and you’ll be shocked at the LGBTQ youth who reported being physically attacked, forced sex and bullied to the point of trying suicide. We need more representation and more stories that represent our youth and the coming out experience is still an incredibly powerful narrative.

Takes place in the 1980’s? Where did you get that idea? The entire books are about two boys who secretly correspond on GMAIL. Simon learns about Blue on TUMBLR.

“He’s a gay male homosexual.” Uh, Queerty, what year are we in, 2018 or 1958? Why not “He’s a young gay man” or “gay teen” or “queer teen,” etc.? “Gay” implies “homosexual,” an antiquated term. Sometimes, I wonder whether real gay people or bots are writing these articles, LOL.

Another lgbt movie is all well and good but judging by the trailer it looks really cliche. Like hes not even disadvantaged in any other way and it doesnt look like he lives anywhere where gays are significantly disparaged. Like oh no your emails are leaked, people in your middle class nonreligous white community will know youre gay…yawn. He also seems pretty popular and well adjusted too, like his experience is not worth noting compared to the trials many real lgbt people face coming out.

I saw an advance screening last night. The movie is fun, sweet, entertaining and endearing. Two thumbs up. As for you critics as it’s cliche or not realistic: NEWS FLASH! It’s a romantic comedy. Geez. Did you also bitch about Pretty Woman or others as their plot lines didn’t fully reflect real life??!

Do you really want another sad, depressing LGBT movie with a tragic ending? Because we already have PLENTY of those.

Hear hear! Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think you can ever have too many well-written, skillfully-portrayed characters in movies that tickle your funny bone and touch your romantic heart. I’m looking forward to this!

He’s come a long way since his days on Melissa and Joey and Jurassic World.

I do look forward to seeing this movie, but I also have my fears. I loved the book and it is amongst my favourite Gay YA books out there, only the book about Aristotle & Dante is above it in my opinion. So I do fear what Hollywood has done.
