On Dec. 5th 1979, feminist Sonia Johnson is formally excommunicated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for her outspoken criticism of the church concerning the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Later, she authored a book, From Housewife to Heretic, about the experience.[Wikipedia]

hum…I need to show this to my prof at college. He always said you can’t use Wikipedia as a source since it’s updated by anyone.

And remember, 1979 was just one year after the church finally allowed blacks to become full members. They have ALWAYS been on the wrong side of civil rights.
Their response is always “WE are descriminated against, you should feel sorry for US!” Yeah, and the Klan gets shit too…deal with it, it is the consequense of your institutionalized bigotry.

@Matt: I bet your professor doesn’t let you put pictures of hot guys in your papers, either.

Mormons have been on the WRONG side of every Civil Rights, Sex Equality, and Human Rights issue for 50 years…at least they are consistant.

@mark:
I hate to say this, but the term “gay friendly” is beginning to sound more and more to me like, “Love the sinner, hate the sin”, only in this instance it sounds more like, “love the money, hate the queer.”
I have a theory about the nature of things.
Doctors do not concern themselves with health. They deal in illness and the treatment of it.
Dentists do not concern themselves with you keeping your teeth. They deal in filling cavities, tooth transplants and crafting dentures.
Lawyers do not concern themselves with justice. They deal in the miscarriage of it.
Firefighters do not concern themselves with preventing fires. They deal with putting fires out.
Religious do not concern themselves with preventing sin. They deal with giving absolution and converting you to their faith.
In other words, all the above people exist for their own celebration and would be out of business and have to find another way to make a living, if we took charge of and responsibility for our health, our teeth, avoiding legal entanglements, practicing safety with matches and flameables and trying to be a better human being on our own recognizance without having to be threatened by fire and brimstone to behave.
And so it is with so-called “gay organizations”. They too, exist for their own celebration. Like most other agencies, including governmental ones, they continue to exist, long after the need for them has passed. They, like the church, become so focused on their need to have a cause to rally about in order to keep the money flowing in, that they loose touch with the purpose for which they were created in the first place. HRC and NAACP are two perfectly good examples.
If Proposition 8 in California had been beaten, the simple fact that remains, is that HRC would have to look around for another cause to rattle the collection plate at us for. And upon failing to do so, would have to consider closing their door for good, since their services are no longer required.
So, the inevitable question arises. Just how anxious and committed are people like GLAAD, HRC and similar organizations in seeing justice being done?
Just saying….

@Japhy:
Thank you for the link you provided above. The Equal Rights Amendment banner reads….
Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
When that Amendment is finally passed, as it should be, do you think it will have any bearing on equality of rights for LGBT people or would the wording have to be modified to read “…on account of sex or sexual orientation.”?
