Congratulations to Thomas Beatie, the original “pregnant man” who’s expecting his third child with wife Nancy after giving birth to Susan in 2008 and a son in 2009. But a bigger congratulations are in order: Thomas and Nancy have learned how to monetize their children!
With all the publicity surrounding their family, the Beaties have been engaged in the tried and true practice of photo deals; they’ve teamed up with the paparazzi agency Splash News to sell their photos to magazines and websites like MomLogic, which has a gallery of Thomas’s newest baby bump. It’s how Heidi and Spencer have been supporting themselves for years, and how the Beaties will afford to keep these three children in diapers.
That, or their reality show.
Mike L.
Awe I saw the pics of their family they look so adorable, the kids are so cute.
Chris
I love how Queerty killed their tombstone story and replaced it with this after finding out it was big news in the 1980s (!) 🙂
WildCat
Some B-list actor goes for a shirtless jog after calling the papparazzi and Queerty dutifully posts the pictures, but these people aren’t allowed to do the same? Is it only OK if you’re a Hollywood fame whore?
sweetdog
Congratulations? Thomas Beatie had a gender-reassignment operation to become a MAN. So why isn’t his WIFE having the kids? This whole pregnant “man” thing is creepy.
Qjersey
i smell people looking to star in a reality show
josh
@sweetdog: Exactly. As much as I am ALL about fair and equal treatment for transgendered folk, this is not a man getting pregnant.
This is a woman who had her tits hacked off and took some testosterone, but not enough to screw up her internal plumbing.
To me, this story is less about transgendered people, and more about mentally ill bitches seeking notoriety and making all transgendered people look like desperate attention whores with mental problems.
josh
Oh, and just to head off some whining, I realize that physiology doesn’t necessitate gender identity. But come on, folks, even the most hardcore trans-activist has to look at this story and shake their heads.
This woman claiming to be a man is no more factual or logical than my claiming to have three penises and wings.
Mike L.
@josh: “…mentally ill bitches…” Just, Wow.
Did you lodge your butt plug up your ass far too deep you can’t get it out today sweety?
It’s ok for ppl to have have certain opinions but to be so abussive and denegrating not to mention malicious in the way they choose to express them is just pure hate.
Lukas P.
@Qjersey: Agreed! I seriously wonder why this couple is motivated to seek media attention. The impending birth of any child is a cause for joy, but I fear we may see a spin off of “John & Kate + 8” in our future.
@josh:Small sample size here, but the two Trans folks {both MTF “status post surgical reassignment” –a term I wish had a better alternative} I spoke with aren’t thrilled by the news coverage at ALL. I’ll wait to hear from more trans-folk before I believe that’s a consensus.
p.s.: Send the penis/wings photo to Fox News, please! {g}
josh
@Mike L.: Do i hate? No, not really. I am so thoroughly disgusted with these stories, though, that some of that disgust comes through. These women are claiming to be men, but have not the biological parts, nor -clearly – the psychological components to be men.
Sane men do not have a uterus.
Sane men do not carry babies (excepting certain amphibians and fish).
Sane men do not seek news coverage of their latest biological horrorshow as a way of paying the bills.
Am I harsh? Sure, I admit that. But I am harsh because these women are doing damage to the trans rights cause and by association, the gay rights cause. Every time one of these women comes forward claiming to be a man giving birth, it gives the opposition fodder for DAYS to mock not just trans people, but gay and genderqueer people in general.
So yeah, I consider them mentally unstable women, and bitches for what they willfully do to all of us in the name of notoriety.
josh
@Lukas P.: LOL. I should really photoshop something up. “Oregon man has three penises and wings…is he the gay Messiah? Or is this the Antichrist foretold by the election of Barak HUSSEIN OBAMA?? Next on Hannity…”
Lukas P.
@josh: LOL, if you do that, I’m pretty sure I can get you press coverage in Norway and the UK! Belgium may be an option, as well. [g]
My numero uno karaoke go-to song will always be the old hit tune that included these poetic words, more or less: “You’re havin’ my baby. What a lovely way of showing how much you love me…..” Anyone remember THAT?!
Mike L.
@josh: Ok then we’ve established that you are expressing yourself in a hateful manner. I wont ignore your reasons however hard it is to pay attention when they are being delivered in the manner in which they were delivered.
I don’t like the way that the story is being presented in mainstream media, but I have no say in that. And I understand that there are transppl that would be upset with Thomas identifying as a f2m man while still performing getting pregnant and having children, but don’t forget that there are already two children and a third one comming that exist and that is thanks to Thomas’ choice of kepping his female repro organs. But I am sure that there are transppl that do identify with him and his choice (although not the way it may be protrayed in the media as some circus show). Transppl are far and wide in types of ppl, they don’t all transition 100% physiologically there are many inbetween. You could argue that this will cause heterosexual cisgender ppl to ridicule them and us by association but so what, who cares I certainly don’t give a damn. If someone has a problem with me I’ll bash their face in same if I witness someone getting bashed (unless there are many ppl doing the bashing then I’ll call 911 and then jump in gone crazy) I’v taken three guys down before on my own I’m not so afraid.
This unfortunately might get in the hands of religious bigots so then we’ll have to distance sexual orientation from gender identity as they ARE different things, but still support our trans friends b/c we have to (and should want to).
Well everyone to their own beliefs in the end anyway.
I hope ppl are just more tolerable in the future with more kids revealing they are trangender earlier in life than ever b4 and the posssibility there to treat with hormones early on so m2f avoid the masculinazation (adams apple, low voice, body hair etc) of their body and f2m with the femenization (breasts etc) of their body b4 it’s too late.
josh

I agree fully and whole-heartedly with this. I cannot even IMAGINE what it must be like to deal with this issue, and I don’t need to be able to imagine it to support the people suffering with this condition.
And it precisely because I feel so strongly for the young victims – as well as older people coming to terms with it – that I am so disgusted with these women claiming to be men. I see it as belittling and demeaning to the fight that young people are struggling with more and more. And it does nothing but make their lives harder in the overall.
jason
I think Thomas and Nancy are gross creatures. Thomas is a hypocrite. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s designed to make money.
They’re both repulsive. I feel sorry for the kids.

His wife is sterile genius, so he decided to have the kids.
A man had a baby, so what? It’s his body, he can do what he wants with it.
missanthrope
Oh yeah, Josh, you’re as big a bigot as Pat Robertson, none of your flimsy justifications can change that. Your appeals to biology are about as childish as some christian chanting “it’s Adam and eve, not Adam and Steve!!!!”. Both forms of hate are based upon the same idea that biology is destiny (ie. men can only couple with women and people can’t identify as the opposite sex).
josh
@missanthrope: Yeah. I’m gonna take you seriously for defending a person who’s notoriety does more damage to trans rights than anything Pat Robertson says.
Silly me, talking about how I know that biology doesn’t determine gender identity and all. This has less to do with gender identity and more to do with a few women bastardising the trans fight for their own selfish ends.
Mike L.
@josh: Or maybe they are advancing the movement where it would become acceptable for transmen who choose to keep their reproductive organs have children which cisgender [gay] men can’t really do. Maybe it burns you inside that you can’t have a biological child w/o having to resort to a surrogate (or some random chick you choose to knock up) while Thomas a self identified trans man has the ability to carry and have his own biological children? (inquiring minds want to know lol, even if Thomas did go through with the whole transition you seem to be the type of person that would probably call him by his birth name and not accept their self identified gender) You should really watch Thomas’ appearance in Oprah where he in his own words explains how he reconciles with the issue you are having too hard a time to understand or even open your mind to.
And there will always be haters from one’s own group about things, just like there are gay men who don’t agree w other gay men about what they are doing it’s the same with trans ppl, “Ooh it will give us a bad name” live and let live.
josh
@Mike L.: I’m a self identified elf. I even have pointed ears. Therefore, I think I will go out and fight for elf rights, and to hell with any gays I anger, since apparently, all that matters is the facts we create for ourselves.
I have no issue with trans people. This, however, is no more a man than I am an elf. *Shrugs* You are entitled to your own opinions, as am I. However, neither of us is entitled to our own facts.
josh
@Mike L.: Also, I would direct you to read ALL of my posts before knee-jerk responding to any of them, seeing as how I have stated again and again my support for the trans community.
I don’t support these attention whores, though, so that makes me a hater. Wow.
Mike L.
@josh: Put a dick in it, grab the closest thing to you and shove it up your ass…wait you’d like that, crap.
LOL we all have dif opinions.
And if we were playing a warcraft-like game (I don’t play but I’ve seen it being played) no you wouldn’t be an elf, you’d be a troll.
XD
josh
@Mike L.: Says the guy trolling. Who devolved into insults first because they couldn’t defend their position? Oh, right. That’d be you. Making you the troll in this stupid disagreement. *Waves and blows a kiss* Thanks for proving a point for me, Mikey.
Mike L.
@josh: Uh I was kidding on the insult thing but I guess.
By the way your kiss landed on my ass.
josh
@Mike L.: As long as it’s a cute ass, I won’t mind. *Grin*
Mike L.
@josh: Think more of Bruce Vilanch-like. Lol!
josh
@Mike L.: Sorry, I don’t really hold grudges over internet arguments. Hope you don’t mind. LOL
Mike L.
Lol neither do I. K wish you well 🙂
Mike L.
@josh: Lol neither do I, Wish you well 🙂
josh
@Mike L.: Likewise! A difference of opinion on one matter does not a hater make, says I.
Mike L.
@josh: Thanks, and you’re right about that. Goodnight 🙂
josh
@Mike L.: *Has thoroughly enjoyed derailing this post thread*

Boo!
Men do not carry babies simple and short. Save gender study class for those boring self important country club cocktails.
I empathise with transsexuals but why call ur self a man when you still do woman stuff.
A now confused John from England
Agree with Josh. Maybe I am reading a different thread but what is illogical with what Josh is saying? *shrugs*
Rudy
I’d love to know what PC loonie invented “cisgendered” and “cissexual.”
These are repulsive words that no one would freely choose to call themselves.
Peter
After reading the above comments, I now more easily understand the vicious thinking and comments by the devout Christians and Muslims; they are JUST REPEATING their thoughts – no matter how evil, un-loving and vile that they are.

Do you need a kleenex?? Its called conviction. If you believe somehing is true in your heart and mind..then it takes a lot if anything to convince you otherwise. I believe in my heart and mind as a man that we are not supposed to carry babies. For the fact our bodies are not built for it is enough fact men are not supposed to carry babies.
I have not one thing against transsexuality. Not one. But you cannot keep playing with nature like this and not expect people to be repelled.
Mike L.
@Peter: Amen!

So, some genetic males are saying that even if they happened to have the right equipment, they still wouldn’t bear children.
That lack of imagination is quite startling. So, what — if you were in a gay couple, you’d still adopt? You’d inseminate a friendly lesbian? Because, you know, if you bore that child you wanted, and had the equipment for, that’d make you really strange.
Peter
Yes Bussy—–It is that CONVICTION that declares someone unfit for what they can or cannot do. He is TRANSGENDER and you are HYPOCRITICAL. A typical “christian” attitude. You must be just so proud of your judgements. (lets destroy our own; so the others do not have to)
edgyguy1426
This was the way this couple wanted to start a family that was biologically their own. I don’t care how they did it, the fact that they’re going to the media pre-empts the media camping out on their lawn and ambushing them to get a photo. My kudos to them for controlling the situation, and if they did end up on some reality show perhaps some ignorant people will learn some compassion for how hard that decision was to make.

Are you trans? If you aren’t then you have no say in what goes for trans struggle for rights. If this has nothing to do with gender identity then what why do you slander Thomas by misgendering him? You have no respect trans people (even if you are trans yourself) and don’t give a shit about trans rights if you can’t have respect for trans rights. Do us all a favor, go die in a fire.
DR
Sorry, this is not a “man”. This is a woman who has had reconstructive surgery to look like a man, took testosterone to become more masculine, but still has the XX chromosomes and a womb and bears children.
Not a man. Men can’t do this. You can’t “transition” then decide you wanna do the ONE thing only a biological woman can do and call yourself a man.
Talk about having your cake and eating it to. AND being an attention-seeker on top of it.
Emily
@Rudy: I’m wondering why you have so much trouble with the term cisgendered (and cissexual)? It merely refers to someone that is not trans, analogous to the use of heterosexual to denote someone who is not gay. There is no derogatory connotation to the word.
Ben
@sweetdog:
Apparently you and your cohorts here are too fucking stupid to do an easy Google search and find out that the only reason Thomas has decided to bear their children is because his wife can’t. She wanted to, but was physically incapable. So instead of jumping through all the legal hoops and pains of adoption, they decided to use the uterus he still had instead. Big whoop.
And… attention seeking? Seems to me he and his family would be getting all sorts of attention whether he looked for it or not. At least this way, they’re getting paid for all the photo ops and interviews, so his children can have a nice, cushy life.
And I say this as a trans man who gets queasy at the very thought of childbirth. Frankly, I’m getting my plumbing surgically removed as soon as I can afford it. But just as it’s no one else’s place to judge my masculinity and identity, it’s not my place to judge Thomas Beatie and the decisions he and his wife have made.
believe
Cisgendered is one fine word amongst many to describe the reality of our gender situations. Some people are Trans, has been like that for thousands of years, and now, because of our sophistication through psychology and sociology we have a word that denotes just what Emily, above, stated….Got it cool kids?
Ben
P.S. For a bunch of folks bitching about how psycho Thomas Beatie is to rub his life in your faces, you sure do seem to be taking a lot of pleasure in dissecting and pronouncing judgment upon all the details you can get your grubby hands on.
Whoever invented the term “bitter old queen brigade” was dead on the money when it comes to many Queerty readers….
Lukas P.
So: A couple is having a baby. It seems odd because what we the public see of the “carrier’s” external appearance doesn’t match what that person has on the inside: i.e., a functional uterus and now a fetus.
That’s an unfamiliar and unexpected notion for most of us—male/female, hetero- or homo-, and it takes some exposure and time to wrap our minds and empathy around. That cognitive dissonance creates the uncomfortable feeling [emotion] of “creepiness” that, like with other new/unknown things, usually fades.
Bottom line: a child is to be born, and that child is very much wanted. That is a good thing.
If the media want to confound the issue with the hullabaloo surrounding same-sex marriage, then we must realize that many of those same people are also anti-abortion/anti-choice and would protest just as vehemently if this couple had chosen NOT to bring the kid into the world. The Beatie family is “damned if they do, and damned if they don’t.”
josh
@missanthrope:
Do us all a favor, go die in a fire.
I love trolls who don’t bother reading or understanding a single thing I write and instead focus on one thing and throw a hissy fit over it.
josh
@Ben: Ben, I feel for you, I truly do. I can’t imagine what you are going through, and I wish you nothing but the best in your future.
My issue, as I have stated again and again, is not with trans people. Not REMOTELY.
My issue is with a woman claiming to be a man while performing EVERY biological function of a woman. If you are a trans man, BE a trans man. It requires a series of hormone treatments that renders the uterus unviable.
So what we have here is either a woman who wants to be called a man but is unwilling to let go of her last vestige of womanhood, or a man who is willing to put a child at risk in a hormonally imbalanced womb. And either way, is willing to accept the money and ‘fame’ our media is willing to heap on her.
Whatever her motives, I find the entire situation disgusting both for the child she is carrying and for the entire trans community which is being cast in a light of shame and ridicule because of this.
I use the gender her actions have chosen for her. Once she’s not pregnant anymore? Once she actually finishes the procedures required? I will have NO problem calling Thomas a man.
Until then, she is a woman who wants to be considered a man, in much the same way I am a man who wants to be considered an tree.
josh
Also, if you disagree with me, fine. I LIKE disagreement. It’s what makes our country run. Disagree with what I say, argue with me, convince me otherwise using fact and logic and reason. Do NOT resort to ad hominem attacks and straw man assaults and expect any respect.
We are not chimpanzees flinging our feces at one another, folks, and personal attacks amount to handfuls of shit flung by persons who can’t form a cogent argument to defend their position.
