That time two dudes got engaged at the top of a tree in the Panamanian rainforest

It’s been two years since the historic Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court ruling made same-sex marriage the law of the land across the United States. To mark the occasion, we’re revisiting our favorite marriage stories to remind the world that love is love.

In February 2016, National Geographic explorer Kevin McLean, who researches arboreal mammals in neotropical forest canopies, brought his boyfriend, Dan, along for the treetop exploration in the jungles of Panama.

Unbeknownst to Dan, Kevin was planning to propose to him on the trip. And unbeknownst to Kevin, Dan was planning to do the same. The magical moment happened at the top of a tree with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Panamanian rainforest.
